Pen Trays
500 and 600 Series SMART Board Pens 800 Series SMART Board Pens
For the 500 & 600 series SMART Boards (refer to SMART Board serial number to determine model series – i.e. SB-685-xxxxxxxx indicates 600 series), the pens are nothing more than a piece of plastic. When a pen is removed from the tray, a sensor in the tray tells the computer which pen has been picked up and the computer will activate that pen color.
For the 800 series, the pens have sensors built into the pen to help the board recognize actions. The four traditional colors are activated by pressing the corresponding color button on the pen tray.

Pen Tray Buttons Overview Additional 800 Series Pen Tray Buttons
The button labeled with an icon that resembles a keyboard will activate an onscreen keyboard for quick access to type on the SMART Board.
The button labeled with an icon that resembles a computer mouse will activate the right-click command. When activated the next contact on the SMART Board will be treated as a right-click on the mouse.
The button labeled with a question mark will activate the help function for the SMART Board/SMART Notebook.
The 800 series SMART Board includes the above buttons as well as buttons that allow the user to select the color of the pen they are currently using from the four traditional SMART Board pen tray colors: red, green, blue, and black.

Bluetooth Connection Status Light Indicators
Automatic Connection Status Light Indicator
1. Plug in the power cord to the SMART Board 2. Plug in the USB Bluetooth receiver to the computer
a. Due to the size of the receiver, it is recommended to connect the receiver to a USB extension cord which normally comes with the receiver
b. If possible, install the receiver in a location difficult to be seen as to avoid potential theft
3. The receiver drivers should install automatically 4. Once the drivers have installed, the Bluetooth transmitter and
receiver should synchronize automatically 5. Synchronization is complete when the status light indicator on the
right side of the SMART Board frame turns solid green
Manual Connection Bluetooth Receiver and Transmitter
Occasionally the Bluetooth connection will need to be configured manually. This happens for a variety of reasons.
1. On the back of the computer, there should be what looks like a large, gray flash drive with a small, red button on it. Press and hold the red button until the green light starts flashing rapidly.
2. Go to the right side of the SMART Board. There are two green lights. One is visible from the front, on the frame. The other is a small light on the back of the SMART board on a gray box.
3. Near the small light, there is a small, black button. Press and hold this button until it starts flashing rapidly as well.
4. The lights should turn red. Eventually, after 15-45 seconds they should turn solid green (this is the indicator that the Bluetooth in the computer and SMART Board are talking).
5. If the green light is solid, then everything should be functioning properly.
6. If at this time, the green light on the front of the SMART Board is still blinking, you will need to restart your computer.
