General Information• Smart Snacks in Schools went into
effect July 1, 2104
• Competitive food: all foods and beverages sold on school campus outside of the reimbursable meal program to students
• Standards apply from midnight to 30 minutes after the end of the school day

Nutrient RequirementsCalorie Limits •Snack items: ≤200 (at elementary schools ≤175 kcal for dairy or whole grain snacks)
• Entrée items: ≤400
Fat Limits
• Snack total fat: ≤35% of kcal
• Entrée total fat: ≤ 4g/100 kcal
• Saturated fat: ≤10% of kcal
• Trans fat: 0 grams
Sodium Limits
• Snack items: ≤230 mg
• Entrée items: ≤480 mg
Sugar Limit
• ≤35% of weight from total sugars in food

Snacks• Must meet Nutrient Requirements (listed on previous slide)
• Be a – Fruit
– Vegetable
– Dairy product
– Whole Grain product (WG must be the first ingredient and comprise at least 50% of total grain weight.)
– Protein food
– Combination food that contains at least ¼ cup fruit or vegetable and at least 2 of the 5 food groups (fruit, vegetable, dairy, protein, grain)
• Must contain 10% of the Daily Value of one or more of the following (through 6/30/16): – Calcium
– Potassium
– Vitamin D
– Dietary fiber

Entrées• Must meet Nutrient Requirements (see
slide 3)
• May be 1 of these three options1. Whole grain & Protein
2. Fruit or Vegetable & Protein
3. Protein (excludes yogurt, cheese, nuts, seeds, & meat snacks)
• ≤400 Calories

Beverages• Milk (fat free white & chocolate, 1% white)
– Non dairy must be nutritionally equivalent to milk
– 12 fl. oz. per serving
• Water (no added sweeteners)
• 50% Fruit or Vegetable Juice (no added sweeteners)
• Sports Drinks, No/Low Calorie Drinks– Elementary & Middle Schools: NOT ALLOWED
– High: ≤5 kcal/8 oz. or ≤10 kcal/20 oz. • Cannot sell beverages > 20 oz.• 10-150 mg Na+, 10-90 mg K+ per 8fl. oz.• No added caffeine

Beverage Portion Sizes• Elementary Schools may
sell up to 8 oz portions
• Middle & High Schools may sell up to 12 oz portions for milk & juice– High Schools may sell up to
20 oz of calorie-free flavored water and no/low cal sports drinks that meet the requirements listed on the previous slide

Charter School (CECA) Nutrition Requirement Differences
Kcal Limits
• ≤200 Kcals per Snack (Elementary, Middle and High School)
• ≤350 Kcals per Entrée
Beverages
• 100% Fruit or Vegetable Juice (No added Sweeteners) can be Diluted w/ water.

Fundraisers
• Standards apply to all fundraisers.
• Non-compliant foods may be sold a ½ hour after the end of the school day
• An Entrée that is sold by any entity, and is not on the menu the day of or day after, must be ≤350 kcal and meet the same criteria as other Entrées

Student OrganizationsElementary
• 4 sales per School Year– 1 item
– After the last lunch
– Cannot prepare items on school campus
– Cannot be same items sold by Nutrition Services Department that day
Middle & High Schools
• Only 1 student organization can sell per day
• Multiple organizations can sell on 4 designated days per year (no more than 3 categories of food)
• Cannot prepare items on school campus
• Cannot be same item sold by Nutrition Services Department that day

Recordkeeping• School district is
responsible for ensuring that each organization selling competitive foods and/or beverages maintains records that document compliance
• At minimum – Receipts
– Nutrition labels and/or product specifications

Monitoring & Compliance• Compliance is monitored as part of the
State agency administrative review
• If violations have occurred, technical assistance and corrective action plans would be required
• Schools may incur fines or funding may be withheld for schools out of compliance
