Executive Summary

One of the main goal of SMART-SPACE Project is to implement capacity building and training

actions for intermediaries. Economic, industrial and structural disparities among Alpine areas

require local pilots to collect and harmonize as many elements and disparities as possible and

reach an Alpine vision.

Intermediaries, as one of the main target stakeholders, have an ever-increasing decisive role

in helping SMEs to succeed digital transformation of their business.

This document summarizes Training and cross-fertilization actions conducted in Baden-

Württemberg (Germany). The pilot actions mainly addressed clusters, technology parks,

industrial associations and other local intermediaries actively involved in supporting

companies’ digitalization.

In particular, bwcon organized:

An Operator Training Course: 40 hours addressing 41 Intermediaries

Cross-fertilization actions: Matchmaking event between intermediaries, business

support organizations and companies. Furthermore individual support for clusters and

business support organizations.

1. Introduction

This report summarizes the outputs of the Training and cross-fertilization actions conducted

in Baden-Württemberg – Germany. Specifically, the pilot actions included:

An Operator Training Course: 40 hours addressing 41 Intermediaries

Cross-fertilization actions: Matchmaking event between intermediaries, business

support organizations and companies. Furthermore individual support for clusters and

business support organizations

These actions are part of the A.T3.1 “Capacity building and awareness actions addressed to

the Alpine Intermediaries innovation networks”.

In particular, the Operator Training Course (OTC) is part of a Training programme including:

A Train the Trainer Course: 2-days course performed in Milan on the 9th-10th of April

2018, to provide regional coaches with basic knowledge on digital technologies and

innovation, methodologies and tools to support local training for digital support

operators and cross-fertilization with clusters manager (see D.T3.1.2 for more details);

2 Study Visits: 1 performed in Milan on the 11th of April 2018 and 1 in Stuttgart on the

17th-20th of June 2018 (see D.T3.1.1 for more details).

The OTC and the cross-fertilization actions accomplishes the Pilot Actions addressed to

intermediaries.

A self-assessment was also developed and spread to assess Intermediaries competences and

awareness on the addressed topics of the Training Programme (see D.T2.3.5 for more details).

2. Operator Training Course

1.1. Summary of the action

The main focus of the OTC was “New Business with new technologies”. Therefore, eight

session took place in different cities of Baden-Württemberg to reach as much as possible

intermediaries and business support organizations. The following OTC took place in detail:

- New business models and szenarios; 07.11.18, Stuttgart; 8 h

- Technology transfer: VR, AR, XR; 12.03.19, Stuttgart; 8 h

- Design Thinking (2x); 04.04.19, Mannheim and 08.05.19 Freiburg; 2 x 4 h

- Data based business models; 16.04.19 Horb a. N.; 4 h

- Digitial innovation in manufacturing industries; 14.05.19, Ehingen; 4 h

- Industry 4.0; 03.06.19, St. Georgen; 4 h

- Additive Manufacturing; 25.06.19, Ravensburg; 4 h

Most of the courses took place as frontal sessions. The Design Thinking courses were

interactive formats to teach the method. In every session different experts were involved:

- Veneta Buchegger, Silicon Alps Cluster Austria

- Daniel Burkhardt, Ferdinand Steinbeis Institut

- Christoph Runde, Virtual Dimension Center Fellbach

- Alexandra Hoffmann, bwcon GmbH

- Larissa Lang, bwcon GmbH

- Lisa Hornberger, bwcon GmbH

- Dr. Thomas Freudenmann, EDI GmbH

- Rudolf Mietzner, bwcon research gGmbH

- Kathrin Günther, Uhlmann Pac-Systeme

- Martin Köppe, bwcon GmbH

- Martin Maciejok, d3d GmbH

Besides the theoretical part of the OTC almost every session includes some practical insights

as well as the presentation of further possibilities to start with digitization projects. For

example funding opportunities and further education offerings.

Number of trained intermediaries 41

1.3. Learning and feedbacks

The OTC aimed on transferring knowledge in context of digital transformation. The focus of

all sessions was giving input about using new technologies for business cases which result in

an added value for the company. Therefore the OTC addressed different topics to cover the

most important topics from idea generation to technology transfer workshops.

Learnings: Most of the participants are focused on the technology and not on the business

cases. Especially intermediaries need to know about the impact of these technologies on

businesses to be able to support companies.

Feedback: The participants appreciated the practical orientation of the format with lots of

examples from the region. The OTC gave a good overview but it is a huge topic with many

sections, which can be dedicated deeply in special workshops. Especially the workshops, which

addressed the business perspective, provided new insights for most of the participants.

Furthermore the sessions which referred to a special innovation method were highly

appreciated as well as technology transfer workshops which go into detail of technologies and

der application.

3. Cross-fertilization Actions

1.4. Summary of the action

The cross-fertilization actions took place as a matching event and individual support. During

the matchmaking the participants organized meetings with people they are interested in.

Most of the meetings took place between companies and investors but also with business

support organizations. During several sessions, the Smart Space Team of bwcon developed an

action plan for the digital hub “Nordschwarzwald” a local initiative to foster innovation in the

northern black forest. The main topics were - which services should be provided, which events

should take place, how to involve companies.

The matchmaking took place on:

07.11.18, Haus der Wirtschaft, Stuttgart

The action plan for digital hub Nordschwarzwald was developed during several meetings from

February until May at “Technologiezentrum Horb”.

Number of organizations involved (if possible)

1.6. Learning and feedbacks

The matchmaking event was a good opportunity for companies to get in touch with other

European innovation stakeholders. But the success of the meetings is not directly measurable.

Nevertheless, it is important to show German companies and innovation stakeholders what’s

happening in their European neighborhood.

The individual support of the DIH Nordschwarzwald led to new cooperations for example the

Usability competence center which offers roadshows for SME about the topic UUX.

Furthermore some contacts to companies in the area of AI were established

Feedbacks:

Good opportunity to get in touch with European companies and intermediaries. Interesting

contacts. Some promising talks but need to see the long term development.

Good input for strategy of DIH Nordschwarzwald.

4. Conclusions

The pilot actions showed that there is a difference between the urban and rural areas in

Baden-Württemberg. The interest of intermediaries in the urban areas is more about strategic

topics like new business models and value added networks. Furthermore, they are more

interested in developing new ideas based on technologies. In the rural areas of Baden-

Württemberg the participants had a high interested in best practices and experiences of other

companies as well as basic technology transfer. Nevertheless all intermediaries involved in the

pilot actions recognized digitalization as a relevant topic for their future business and work

with companies.
