A mec ha nica l ca ble c lea t test

SmartCleat Summary from the Sintef, Trondheim, Norway test (2002):

TREFOIL CABLE CLEATTrefoil Ca ble Clea ts a re mainly use d for holding high voltag esingle co re cab les in tria ngular form, but ca n also b e used forsingle cab les a nd bundles o f cab les.

SmartCleat fits cables between 25-99 mm in diameter and

single ca bles or bundles of ca bles up to 99 mm in diameter.SmartCleat is specially made to resist the extreme dynamicenergy w hich ca n oc cur with pow erful short c ircuits inelectrical installations.

The clea ts a re teste d w ith sho rt circuits up to 160 kA-Pe a k.

As the photos show , the neates t a nd mos t functional solution is to cleat the ca ble w ith close spa cings - which a lsoensures that the cable is fully reusable.Wider spa cings do not us ually result in greater loa ds on cleats, b ut the broa d a rch of the ca ble ca n da mag e thesurroundings and stretch the terminations. A non-heavy d uty mantle ma y g et da mag ed from impact with theintermediate rung. Choice of cleat spacing should therefore be decided in consultation with the cable supplier.

SmartCleat trefoil cable cleatshave been tes ted to meet the highes tcus tomer s ta nda rds for short circuit c urrent. Here a re s ome of the tes t res ults fromNorwegian testing institute Sintef:

Cleat spacing: 150 mmShort circuit current: 160 kA peak.Res ult. RMS 87 kACleat bec omes slightly " rounder" in sha pe, but w ithout reducing

strength and functionality.Cab le shows no arching or damag e.Cable ladder shows no deformation.

Cleat spacing: 300 mmShort circuit current: 135 kA peak.Res ult. RMS 73 kACleat bec omes slightly " rounder" in sha pe, but w ithout reducingstrength and functionality.Cable shows clear arching and stretch marks may appear on mantle.Cable ladder shows no deformation.

Cleat spacing: 600 mmShort circuit current: 133kA peak.Res ult. RMS 72 kACleat bec omes slightly " rounder" in sha pe, but w ithout reducingstrength and functionality.Cable shows clear arching and stretch marks may appear on mantle.Ca ble lad der show s slight de formation on intermediate rungs.

Cleat spacing: 900 mmShort circuit current: 103kA peak.Res ult. RMS 65 kACleat show s no visible change.Cab le show s c lear arching a nd stretch marks and s ome da mage.Ca ble lad der show s insignifica nt deformation on s ide pieces andintermediate rungs.

What to expect from the tests:Would realistic tests done o n se veral ca ble lengths and clampdistances confirm the theory that the ca ble must be ad ditionallysec ured a t both ends to reduce arching and e liminate deformation

and stretch marks on the cable?Result of the test.By using a secure plate (rung reinforcing plate) at both ends of theca ble run it co nfirms: Less a rching on the c ab le. Less stretch at terminated ends significant point in regard to

functiona lity follow ing s hort circuiting . No stretch marks o n outer ca ble sheath. No stretch/deforma tion of rungs at the end o f the cab le la dd er.

In addition, the tests obtained important data for making the followingrecommendation conc erning ma ximum cleat spa cing, s ee ta ble 2.

The tests were ca rried out w ithout any da mag e to the ca ble, evenwhen using clamps two sizes too large w ith or without extra rubberinserts.

The tes t proced ure wa s s et up following dialogue w ith Draka Norsk

In order to set realistic maximum test values for the most commonca ble cros s -sec tions 150/240/300 mm2, we c hose to us e a formulafrom NEK 606 which gives values as recommended in EN 50368.The formula sta tes w hat is ma ximum sho rt-circuit current for a c ab lewithout the c entre c ore bec oming so hot that it w eakens the insulationsheath ( 250 C).
