What is a Smartphone?A Smartphone is a mobile telephone that has PC-like functionality making a variety of different communication methods quicker and easier to conduct on the go. In other words, a Smartphone is a miniature computer that has phone capabilities.

What are some of the additional features on a Smartphone?Smartphones offer advanced features that include; Internet, email, application software, MP3 player ability, camera, USB and VGA connectors, e-book reader capabilities, GPS locators, and much more (Smartphones, wikipedia.org).

Technology has taken Smartphones a long way since they first became popular in the late 1990s-

Next lets take a look at (click) the History of Smartphones.

(Dont use Wikipedia. Nikki does it on several occasions in this presentation. The better approach would be to check out the source that Wikipedia uses and confirm the information from the original source).3History of SmartphonesFirst Smartphones

The history of the Smartphones-The Smartphone technology has been around since 1992, although few people had one at that time (Smartphones: PC Today, 2009) .

-Since then, Smartphones have evolved into very small computers, offering the kind of power you have with your desktop or laptop computer (Smartphones: About.com, 2009)

-Now, with the access of application software programs, the transfer of information has become easier via Smartphone.

PDAs became popular in the mid-1990s, but before that even happened the first Smartphone was released into the market in the early 1990s (A Short History: ArticlesBase, 2009)

Who developed the first Smartphone?-Simon, the first Smartphone, was released in 1992 by IBM. -Besides being a mobile phone, it also offered a calendar, address book, world clock, calculator, note pad, email access, fax capabilities, and games.-By today's standards, the Simon would be a fairly low-end product, however at the time, the Simon was incredibly advanced.

Who was the second mover in the market?-Nokia was the second mover into the market in 1996 with the Nokia Communicator line.-This distinctive computer style Smartphone was the result of a collaborative effort of an earlier successful and expensive PDA model by Hewlett Packard combined with Nokias bestselling phone at the time.-Now, thirteen years later the market for Smartphones continues to soar.Although Smartphones have been around for the the better half of two decades, application software stores did not become available until recently- (Smartphones, wikipedia.org).

What others will follow?-Following the popularity of Apple's App Store, RIM recently launched their Blackberry App World (Blackberry: Appworld, 2009)-Many other mobile platforms are following Apple and RIM including Palm, Microsoft, and Nokia. They have announced they will launch their app stores in the future.

What is TOMS Shoes Inc? -TOMS Shoes Inc is an online shoe retailer that blends commercial and philanthropic interests. For every pair of shoes sold by the company, the company donates a pair of shoes to a child in need, typically in a 3rd world country. How does TOMS Shoes operate using Smartphones? TOMS Shoes targets college students because they are the demographic that heavily rely on mobile devices for communication. These college students donate their old pairs of shoes to the company and buy a pair of TOMS Shoes in exchange. TOMS would text sweepstake offerings to these students, thereby obtaining their email address and other information, to advertise their shoes and mission. The lucky winners would win a trip to Argentina to help place shoes on needy children's feet with the TOMS employees.Blake Mycoskie, TOMS CEO, runs his company completely from his iPhone. As you can see, using a Smartphone is essential for Blake and his employees to operate and conduct business (Toms Shoes: tomshoes.com; 2009, Mobile Marketing: textme.net, 2009)

In a similar story, Anheuser Bush did the same thing-12Success with Smartphone'sAnheuser Busch

Mobile Marketing - Text to Win Lowers costs Increase in-store promotions Drive up additional sales Continuous customer dialogues Quicker response

Anheuser Bush -As Americas leading brewery and one of its largest and best known brands, Anheuser Busch is also among the best at understanding customer preferences. Products from Anheuser Bush have the largest consumption among the a demographic of mobile-savvy customers. How did Anheuser Bushs mobile marketing campaign help them?Anheuser Bush marketers used TextMe, where customers text the company in hopes of getting free gas for a year, as their promotional avenue rather than the traditional lengthy paper sign-up method. This allowed Anheuser Busch to not only quickly execute a higher response promotion, it lowered costs, and established the basis for continuous dialogues with consumers, while driving the sales up. These are just two marketing examples on how Smartphones are productive in business. You can imagine how the traders on Wall Street feel about their Smartphones. (Mobile Marketing: textme.net, 2009)
