What is LED lightTechnology ProfileLight-emitting diodes (LEDs) are the first solid-state light (SSL) source for general lighting, and the technology has improved dramatically since first developed in the early 1960s. An LED is a semiconductor in the form of a chemical chip embedded in a plstic capsule (Figure 1).A volt from a direct current energizes the chip, making visible light. The minimal amount of heat that is produced is emitted to the bottom of the unit, which should be a heat-absorbing material, or what is referred to as a heat sink (Figure 2). A driver or transformer is needed to operate the LEDs with a direct current. Th light is focused by lenses or scattered by diffusers. To produce adequate illumination for an area in a room or surface requires
several LEDs in one fixture.
