About the Conference With higher fuel costs and raising environmental concerns globally, there has been an increased incentive to move to-wards
marine technology that is more eco-friendly in nature. The term “Green Technology” is applied to procedures, de-signs and sys-
tems that helps contribute in an eco-friendly fashion. Green Technology is nothing new and has existed for years but often dis-
regarded for various reasons. One such example being the Flettner Rotor which had been developed as early in the 1920s but
was shelved on an economic basis as the high capital costs outweighed the low bunker costs. With higher fuel costs and an
increased focus on becoming “greener”, such technology is being developed again. Part of this growth in green technology is
because of new legislation. With tougher legislation being implemented regarding carbon emissions, it is expected billions of
dollars is to be invested by organizations to meet these emission caps, or risk large penalties. As a result of the investment
geared towards making ships greener, the industry is continually looking to develop and improve on existing ship design and
systems. These improvements are centred on driving down fuel consumption and carbon emissions, which both contribute to a
greener environment.
With this increased importance on being green, being placed by an increasing amount of stakeholders within a business, it is
becoming vital that we increase engagement between industry and academia. This is to ensure that the technology and prac-
tices match the ambition and objectives that have been set, and drive R&D across the industry.

"Slow (green) innovation in shipping is dangerous; a discussion of a rigorously different approach"
Jeroen Pruyn started working for the TUDelft straight after graduation (2003), first as a researcher and PhD, later as an Assistant Profes-
sor. Since the start he’s been working on both Engineering and Economics, with a focus on ship production and shipping management.
Started through a project on ship recycling about 7 years ago, he is now interested in ways to help the maritime industry become more
sustainable. The fact that the industry is in danger of being overtaken by other modes of transport in the aspect of sustainability is worri-
some to him. The questions why the industry is staying behind on innovation on these matters and which innovations and business mod-
els may stop this decline, are his current research interests.
Prof Xinping Yan,Wuhan Univerity of Technology, China
Professor Xinping Yan is the former Vice President of Wuhan University of Technology (1999-2015), and the founder of Reliability Engi-
neering Institute (REI) and Intelligent Transport System Research Center (ITSC) in Wuhan University of Technology, and now he is the
Chair Professor of marine engineering, Reliability and Safety, and Director of National Engineering Research Center for Water Transport
Safety (WTS Center), China. Received the BSc and master’s degree in marine mechanical engineering from Wuhan University of Water
Transportation Engineering, China in 1982 and 1987 respectively, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University,
China in 1997. His research interests include condition monitoring and wear diagnosis for Marine System, renewable energy for marine
power, risk assessment and reliability, intelligent Ship, etc. He is the member of ISO/TC108/SC5 Committee, Vice Chairman of China
Association of Plant Engineering. The Extinguished Visiting Fellowship granted by the Royal Academy of Engineering (2014). He has pub-
lished 10 monographs and textbooks, over 500 refereed journal and conference publications (98 SCI-cited journal papers since 2005),
15 keynote speeches in international and national conferences, Second Prize for Technological Invention Award of China (2012) and
Second Prize for Science and Technology Progress Award of China (2016).

Dr Peter Clive, Wood,
Peter has been associated with the wind power industry since taking his PhD in physics in 2002. He has had a central role in the develop-
ment of the Galion Lidar, the 2nd generation wind Lidar system. This system enables wind fields to be surveyed with previously unobtain-
able detail and precision, revealing flow characteristics and structures that have a significant impact on the productivity and longevity of
wind power assets. Peter also pioneered the introduction of response deficit analysis into wind turbine performance assessment, allow-
ing the expertise and experience of wind analysts to be leveraged in the most focused and cost effective manner. His interests also in-
clude innovative resource assessment techniques that extract all the available information from the long and short term datasets from

Dr. O. P. Sha received his B.Tech. (Hons.) degree in Naval Architecture from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in
1980; M.Sc. in Ship Production Technology from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, United Kingdom, in 1982; and Ph.D.
in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1996. Presently, he is a professor in the Department of
Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture. He was Dean, Continuing Education from October 2013 to September 2016 at
the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. He teaches a wide variety of subjects at the Institute and his main areas
of interest include ship design and production, CAD/CAM and high performance vehicles. He is involved in a number of
sponsored research and industrial consultancy projects. Currently he is associated with design of inland vessels on the river
Ganges for the Govt. of India’s Jal Marg Vikas Project.
Stuart Smith holds a BSc in naval architecture and a PhD in hydrodynamics from Glasgow University. In his early career he worked for Seaforth Maritime and BP, before a 16-year association with Amerada Hess. He joined Subsea 7 in 2002 and has held a number of roles associated with engineering, new technology and fleet development. Mr Smith is currently vice presi-dent for asset development and has been responsible for project creation for Seven Oceans, Seven Seas, Seven Pacific, Seven Atlantic, Normand Subsea, Seven Waves and her sister vessels, Seven Kestrel, and Seven Arctic. He is the recipient of various professional awards.

Dr. Satir has 7 years of sailing experience, retiring from sea as a chief officer from Villa shipping. Currently an associate prof at Department of the Marine Transportation and Management Engineering, Istanbul Technical University, Maritime Faculty (ITUMF) after receiving his phD from Istanbul university in 2006.

Airport Connections
Glasgow is well connected globally by Glasgow International Airport through Emirates, KLM, Air France,
Easyjet, Ryanair and many more. The airport is currently linked to Glasgow City Centre by Glasgow Shuttle
bus service 500. This is run by First Glasgow under contract to Glasgow Airport. The service runs 24 hours a
day, direct via the M8 motorway.
Train Connections
Fast trains run into the centre of Glasgow terminating at Glasgow Central. The train service from London,
Manchester, Newcastle terminate at Glasgow Central or at Glasgow Queens Street with connections
through Edinburgh Waverley.
