ST. MICHAEL’S COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL - DONOR RECOGNITION REPORT - 2014 | 2015 • LEARN WITH CONFIDENCE | LEAD WITH CHARACTER | ACHIEVE LASTING SUCCESS 2PAGE

As I look through these pages of our annual Donor Recognition Report, I am struck by how many people give so generously to our community…… 96% is an amazing parent participation rate in the school’s Annual Fund! In addition to each financial gift, however, there are hours and hours of community volunteer work logged by class parents, event coordinators, lunch volunteers, trip chaperones, trustees, Halloween set designers, guest speakers, bake sale chefs, and many more. We are grateful for the enormous number of people who are willing to give generously of themselves to our school in so many different ways…the final list could fill many dozens more pages of this report. This level of school participation says something very important to the students who inhabit our classrooms. From a young age, our children at St. Michael’s learn that generosity is a meaningful, lifelong experience. I thank you all for the ways you model success for our students. I would like to take special note of two significant gifts we received this past spring. Sue and George Petrovas donated an extensive collection of furnishings to help make our newly restored Mason House entry match the beauty of the Mason House Founders Library and building exterior. Molly and Guillaume de Ramel contributed funds to purchase a school van for sports teams and field trips starting in the fall. Both the Petrovas and de Ramel families also contributed funds to kickstart an exciting range of electives this fall focusing on project based programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). As I write this letter in July, we are exploring options for courses including rocketry, robotics, boatbuilding, and the science of natural disasters. A keystone of our electives program will be the de Ramel MakerLab in which students create innovative projects using our growing collection of high tech equipment (e.g.-3D printer, vinyl printer, video software, Raspberry Pi computer boards) and familiar low tech materials (e.g.- paper, cardboard, Legos, wood, cloth, plastic). These electives courses are designed to provide opportunities for our students to explore a wide range of projects that demand research, creativity, and innovation.

Finally, I would like to send a special thank you to our Parent Association President, Sheila Powell, whose constant organizational energy and boundless joy have helped to round up and orchestrate parent volunteers all year long; a special thank you to Advancement Committee Chair, Griffin Flynn, for the incredible success of our school’s Annual Fund; a special thank you to Leslie Grosvenor, our Director of Institutional Advancement, for the painstaking back office work that yields incredible team results with little of the deserved credit; and a special thank you to Bethany Di Napoli, Chair of the St. Michael’s Board of Trustees, whose commitment, wisdom, and leadership provide inspiration to every member of our community.

My very best wishes and deepest appreciation, John H. Zurn, Head of School

Pride. Optimism. Gratitude…these are the words that come to mind as I reflect on this past school year at St. Michael’s. It has been a remarkable year with the predominant focus being the successful transition of leadership for our school; but, this is not to overshadow the countless other successes that have brought pride, optimism and gratitude to me as Chair of the Board of Trustees. This year has been a pivotal year for our school community as we navigated the introduction and integration of our new school leader, John Zurn, with our students, parents, faculty, staff, and the larger Newport community. The Board of Trustees worked very closely with John this past year to help him fully understand our school’s culture, challenges, and opportunities. John has demonstrated remarkable leadership in his first year at St. Michael’s beginning with the introduction of his hallmark Traits for Success program, providing organizational structure and processes to our daily operations and readying our school for enormous growth. As a school community we are reflecting on our programs and operations and discussing our future as part of our Accreditation and Strategic Planning activities that will continue through next year. I am optimistic that the expertise, passion and leadership that we have in John will result in tremendous benefits and growth for St. Michael’s in the near and long term future. What a year of progress it has been for our school with so many punctuation points of success that make me so proud of our fine school. Just to highlight a few, I was so moved by the tremendous passion and commitment of our third grade students who were responsible for introducing legislation at the State House to make the American Burying Beetle the official state insect. These students have demonstrated to themselves and others that we all have the ability to make a positive impact in our community if we are willing to do the work, be persistent, and truly care about what we are advocating for. They are great role models for all of us! Our school has taken significant steps in innovation and technology with the launch of our MakerLab - our indoor playground for creativity! The MakerLab will allow students to literally build their dreams in a creative and collaborative environment. I am so proud of our faculty, students, and donors who are embracing these progressive opportunities for our school. Finally, I am so proud of our parents who helped us set a record- breaking year for parent participation in

our Annual Fund. 96% of our parents made a contribution to the Annual Fund this year and I couldn’t be more proud of this strong demonstration of support for our school. As I begin my fifth year as Chair of the Board of Trustees, gratitude runs deep for me at St. Michael’s. I am increasingly grateful for the warm and welcoming community that is characteristic of our school community. I am increasingly impressed and grateful for the dedication and professionalism of our faculty and staff who work so hard every day to give our students and families an incredible educational experience. My fellow Trustees, who volunteer countless hours as stewards of our school’s mission, energize me and motivate me to continue this most important work. For that, I am most grateful. I look forward to a new year of positive energy and enthusiasm that infuses our school daily and invite all of you to be active participants in our continual pursuit of excellence.

Kind regards,Bethany Di Napoli

St. Michael’s Country Day School recognized 34 of its youngest students on June 8 in the annual year-end ceremony for members of its preschool, prekindergarten, and kindergarten classes in the Early Childhood program. The ceremony, held in the Hill Arts and Athletics Center, began with a processional and a welcome address from Head of School, John H. Zurn. There were many songs, smiles, and memories shared at the morning celebration. All three grades sang “This Little Light of Mine”. Leadership is not always about being first in line. It is more often about being a confident team player and taking that responsibility seriously. - John. H. Zurn

Student Leadership: American Burying Beetle

“These students are an inspiration. They truly took their education beyond the classroom.” - Governor Gina Raimondo (RI)

“I’m so impressed by the initiative these children took and the diligence with which they pursued their idea. Many years from now, when their grandchildren are learning about Rhode Island like they were this year, they’ll be able to proudly tell them the story of how Rhode Island has a state insect because of their advocacy in the third grade. They have already made their mark in Rhode Island.”

- State Representative Lauren Carson(District 75, Newport)

“The students behind this bill have worked hard to make their idea a reality, negotiating the democratic process like adults and exercising their rights as involved citizens. It’s been an excellent civics lesson for them, and they’ve been a great example to other kids of how any citizen, at any age, can be engaged in their government and make a difference.”

- Senator V. Susan Sosnowski(District 37, New Shoreham, South Kingstown)

In July, 2015, Governor Gina M. Raimondo signed a bill into law naming the endangered American burying beetle as the official state insect of Rhode Island.

Leading up to this day over many months, our third grade students worked diligently as a team to generate the idea for a RI state insect, research the American burying beetle and its important role in our environment, and present before a professional conference on Project Based Learning. The third graders also wrote many letters to local news media, lobbied state politicians on the insect’s behalf, and traveled to the State House in Providence to testify before two separate legislative committees.

It was an honor for our third grade students and their teachers to stand beside Governor Raimondo as she signed the bill into law at Roger Williams Park Zoo on July 15.

Parents Association The Parents Association (PA) sponsored many wonderful events for St. Michael’s Country Day School in 2014-15. We would like to thank all the parents who served as volunteers during the school year. Parents, faculty, staff, and students contributed their time as volunteers, modeling leadership and demonstrating the importance of volunteerism and philanthropy for our children. Of course, we want to recognize the immediate results of your hard work, but we would also like to thank you for contributing to the character of our students. Due to the combined efforts of many, we exceeded our budgetary goals in 2014-15 and raised approximately $35,000! Specifically, the PA sponsored three family focused events this year. The Fall Frenzy, Halloween Party, and Skating Party are beloved traditions at St. Michael’s that bring together volunteers from the cottage to eighth grade. Parents, teachers, grandparents, and recent alumni served refreshments, monitored activities, decorated, planned, cleaned up, and even dressed up to create special occasions, memorable traditions, many smiles, and much laughter for our kids. Our St. Michael’s community is strengthened by these opportunities for families to connect across grades and divisions. Indeed, St. Michael’s is a vibrant school community thanks to the PA volunteers who also made possible the Bake Sale and Holiday Wreath Sale, a Holiday Stroll in downtown Newport, a community film event in the spring that highlighted Earth Day and our science department, Teacher Appreciation Week, and our Spring Party and Auction. Volunteers also coordinated the lunch program, served as class parents, managed our budgets, sold our school merchandise, planted flower pots for our teachers, organized a bike to school day, and so much more!

Thank you!Sheila Powell

Directed Giving

Directed donations are gifts to specific programs and/or projects. Many of our donors give to the Annual Fund first and then also make a directed gift.

Your directed donations have lasting impact on the growth and continued success of our school. Gifts in the past two years for the restoration of the Founders Library, the Mason House lobby, and the furnishings, enhanced our sense of community and re-newed our pride in this historic ‘heart’ of our campus.

This year we were fortunate to receive a number of significant gifts that enriched our programs immensely, such as funding for the de Ramel MakerLab and Project Based In-struction, STEM program development, a school van, microphones for the drama depart-ment, sports uniforms, the Navy Band concert stage, American burying beetle t-shirts, a preschool sandbox, band instruments, an outdoor scoreboard, and so much more.

We would like to thank those listed below who made directed gifts in 2014-15.

The Legacy of Excellence Society at St. Michael’s Country Day SchoolThe Legacy of Excellence Society honors those supporters who have designated a portion of their assets in their will or through their estate planning to benefit St. Michael’s Country Day School. Gifts from bequests and trusts ensure the future of our remarkable school, support our mission, and help establish a lasting legacy of excellence at SMS for today’s students and for generations to come. Individuals who include the school in their estate plans become members of the St. Michael’s Legacy of Excellence Society.

Your bequest can be a specific dollar amount or a certain percentage of the balance remaining in your estate or trust after paying all debts, costs and other prior legacies. Whichever form you prefer, you can direct that your bequest be unrestricted for the general support of our mission or for a specific purpose you designate (be sure to check with us to make sure your gift can be used as intended). Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime. You can modify your gift to address changing circumstances. The Legacy of Excellence Society is open to anyone to join and gifts of all sizes are accepted.

Whatever your objectives, we will be happy to work with you in planning a bequest that will be satisfying, economical and effective in carrying out your wishes. Please contact us so that we can assist you through every step of the process or if you have already included St. Michael’s in your estate planning. We would like to add your name to our roster of distinguished legacy supporters.
