Ministry Vows To Curb SME Bankruptcies By Sonia K

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, as a focal point for SME development, is sensitive to the increase in bankruptcy adjudication orders. In 1996, there were only three cases compared to 114 adjudication orders recorded last year.

Although the numbers, which are quite substantial, may not be 100 per cent

business related, the ministry endeavours to find solutions that can contribute to reducing the rate of business failures.

"We do this by providing programmes that respond to the possible causes of business failures,- said the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and

Primary Resources, Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid bin Hj Jaafar, during Asia Inc's SME Networking Luncheon at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

"While noting that business failures are part and parcel of the business cycle, it does not decry the reality that on a personal level, the experience is indeed unpleasant and traumatic. To a certain extent, the negative aspects of such an experience can

be moderated by sharing it with others as well as having a positive mindset on the experience," he said.

He said that in the United States, of the around 100.000 business failures every year, the causes of those failures are identified as firstly, managerial incompetence,

secondly, unbalanced experience and lastly, lack of line experience. He highlighted that these three reasons account for four per cent of business failures while the four, two and one per cent account for neglect of businesses, fraud and disaster eases respectively.

"In the case of MIPR, our various programmes are aimed at addressing the first two

causes of business failures. Through the coordination of the Entrepreneurial Development Centre (EDC) in Sinaut, the MIPR has been carrying out training programmes for prospective SMEs and qualified SMEs in Brunei for the past 20-25 years.

"On average, every year the centre conducts about 25-30 course titles that cover

almost all aspects related to starting and operating a business. These include business management, standards and quality management, marketing, financial management, negotiation skills, basic accounting and even IT applications. Since

2002, those programmes are attended by around 700 participants every year," Dato Hj Mohd Hamid said.

The MIPR's response for the third factor which causes business failures, namely, lack of line experience is the business incubator programme in Sinaut. "It is an attempt at bridging the gap of the inexperienced by new but promising entrepreneurs in

agriculture, freshwater aquaculture, tailoring and dressmaking and the making of Songkok and Jong Sarat, interior design," he said.

The ministry is in the process of completing the construction of a four-storey business incubator centre in Kampong Anggerek Desa, which is expected to be complete in June this year. The first, second and third floors will provide space for a

total of eight quail tied SMEs engaged in the production of local products, excluding those in food and IT sectors. Some of the SMEs in Sinaut engaged in handicrafts, tailoring and tenunan making will be moving to this new site. The ground floor of that centre will also house an exhibition and sales gallery for local products including those from incubates.

"I wish to highlight another element that needs to he addressed in order to promote business survival. Equally important to developing entrepreneurship qualities and spirit, our SMEs must also develop their capacity for innovation.

"We in the MIPR believe that promoting innovation among SMEs can be better achieved when we address it in a systematic way from the generation of a new idea

from initial concept, through research and development, to a ready-for-market product. And our programmes are laid out with that in mind," he added. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

I failed, so what?

'Its not a disgrace to fail. Failing is one of the greatest arts in the world' - Charles F

Kettering People im beat today.

Dozed off halfway through practice before the 5.30 class and again right after dinner, i dropped on the bed. I was waiting for the 10 pm news for this. This morning through lunch, I attended a short, sweet and to the point workshop by

Nanz Chong Como on Managing and Growing Highlights from one business 99 lessons. I've attended workshops helping smes (small & medium enterprise) last in 2005 and must say this was the first i attended this year. 2006 i guiltily shunned

away from the networking light due to work, this and that. I can say im so glad i was present for this one. I saw familiar faces and old friends again. And 1 good friend pointed out i have white hair. Frizzy one at that too. I have white hair? I have white hair! And it stuck right out of my head like a sore thumb.

Following Nanz's talk on failing and falling and to have the courage to get up again, i led the 7pm class to fall down today. Salamba sirsasana ( supported headstand) in

the middle of the room with just a crash pad propped for safety. I really wanted them to see what it was like to fall. Only when you fall can you learn just how further back to place the hips and learn to engage in the core to keep you from falling. And only when you fall can you see how it will help you grow stronger in your pose. Much

like in life . Much like in business.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Rabu - Perangkaan mahkamah mencatatkan sebanyak tiga
