Philosophy
Living in a large city, we see a lot of miserable people. The first project that
we ever embarked on, set out to create a moments change in an otherwise
routine day. It was at this point that we decided; whatever we do, it has to
make someone smile. Yellow complements this outlook for its association
with happiness and embodiment of hopefulness and reassurance.
Why SMILE?
With access to a wealth of information, consumers are more informed
about the brands they use. This means that transparency is increasingly
important. Customers no longer want to have messages pushed
to them - they want to be able to pull information on demand.
This new breed of customer wants a unique experience based on
your core values informed by the truth. When your customers interact
with your experience, emotional ties to your brand are created.
A narrative is imperative to your brands ability to communicate
effectively. To differentiate your brand we craft a journey that
inspires customers to advocate usage to their connections.

What we do
Our job is to solve problems and put together a visual representation
of your core values. To enable us to do this effectively, we immerse
ourselves by spending time with your staff and ask your customers
questions - and not just the obvious ones; your customers have lives
of their own and their experiences inform opinions on your brand.
When we’ve done our research we develop a strategy. We’ll
decide how your brand is going to evolve over time and how
we can optimise your brand to weather that change.
Then we’ll meet up with you to discuss our proposed strategy and
choose the most appropriate media to communicate that message.
Whether it’s a beautiful piece of print or something in the digital realms
- we’ll design and build it and present you with your final outcome.
We’ll even present you with a “Brand Document” which will detail
your brand and how it should be treated. Your “Brand Document”
is more than just a logo; it is a lifetime reference to how you
should visually represent your company from your stationary
to how your employee’s should answer the telephone.
In-house skills
When your project kicks off, we’ll make sure that you work with the same
team of people from start to finish. This way you’ll have a consistent
point of contact and you’ll know the people working on your project
by name - something you won’t get at some of the larger agencies.
Research
A small team will put together a research document based on your
requirements. This document will inform the entire project.
Strategy
The same team that crafted the research document will create a brand
strategy. Why? Because this team knows your company inside out.
Design
All creative is handled by our designers, who are complete
perfectionists. Nothing leaves the SMILE studio without it meeting
the highest standards. With a variety of backgrounds including
graphic design, photography and illustration; our creatives are
able to pool their skills and develop awesome brands.
Digital
Web development, mobile development and interface design:
we’ve got it covered. We love digital so much that we’ve even
pioneered research into grid systems for screen design.

Our Clients
Our varied list of clients trust us with their brand communications because
we work with them, not for them. This is what they say about us:
Within a challenging lead time Smile worked with our
campaign design elements to produce a micro site for our
outdoor theatre programme, Six Summer Saturdays. They
designed bespoke public interfaces and connected to user
generated content ensuring a functional website which stood
out from the crowd . The team were a real pleasure to work
with, they delivered a cost effective website with a Smile.

S&X Media commissioned us to design the maps for the West
Midlands section of the England 2018 world cup bid.
Response
Taking imagery from football stadia, we created a unique map that
had strong visual links to the world cup bid. The maps printed onto
exhibition stands that were used as a backdrop to a conference held at

by overlaying it with the new development.
Brief
To create an identity, product and website for a new

Type
Background
Type is interested in the history, theory and application of typography. They
research, write, lecture, and teach typography as well as organise activities
for both professional typographers and enthusiasts of the subject.
Brief
To create a brand identity and online presence for Type.
Response
Heavily influenced by Type’s love of Birmingham, we found
inspirations from Birmingham based typographer John Baskervile.
The brand we created for Type relates to a modern, design
led culture, whilst retaining aspects from the traditional side
of print and design. It is a balance of geometrical forms of
bold colour that enforces the brand through association.

class educating pupils with communication disorders
and delays, mainly autism spectrum disorders.
Brief
To create an identity and deliver it through a web presence.
Response
We researched autism and spent some time at the school. This enabled
us to move away from the school’s dated branding, we created a marque
that is not only practical for the schools requirements (photocopying, fax
etc.) but communicates the school values in a more efficient model.

Longwill School for the Deaf
Background
Longwill is a primary school for deaf children.
Brief
To create a bi-lingual web presence that is engaging
for pupils, staff and parents. The presence must allow
“technophobes” the staff to update the site.
Response
We immersed ourselves into the deaf school learning as
much as we could about the community and its culture. A key
feature was to highlight the school as a bilingual education,
therefore a deaf signer was used as well as text.
We created a system that allows the staff to update the
website by email which they are all familiar with. There is
practically no learning curve for the teachers to embrace.
