Whole grains get your day off to a good start.

(ARA) — Getting a good start to your day takes a lot more than the alarm going off at the right time and avoiding traffic. What you eat in the morning can have an effect on your whole day — and your health.

“Choosing whole grain at break-fast is a great first step in starting your day off on the right track,” said Dr. Travis Stork, author and host of the Emmy Award-winning daytime talk show “The Doctors.” “When grocery shopping, look for foods that list whole grain at the top of the ingredients list.”

Plenty of nutritious breakfast options will please any palate and pack a whole-grain punch, such as oatmeal and whole grain cereal, toast, waffles and pancakes.

Only 5 percent of Americans get the recommended three full daily servings of whole grain, accord-

ing to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. In fact, the average person gets little more than half a serving of whole grain each day.

“It’s concerning that Americans aren’t getting enough whole grain, a key component of a healthy diet,” said Stork. “Eating the recommend-ed amount of whole grain can help with diabetes and weight manage-ment as well as reduce the risk of heart disease.”

Stork is partnering with General Mills to educate Americans about the importance of whole grain and how it’s easy to eat a diet rich in whole grain by making the right choices — beginning with break-fast.

through a text-messaging service.

Now expect-ant or new moms can easily get the information they need through a free service on their cell phones: text4baby.

Text4baby provides time-ly pregnancy and health tips sent directly to participants’ cell phones in the form of text messages. While 90 percent of people in the U.S. have cell phones, text4baby is the first free, health education program in the country to harness the popularity of texting as a mode of communication.

Pregnant women and new

mothers who text “BABY” (or “BEBE” for Spanish) to 511411 receive weekly text messages, timed to their due date or their baby’s birth date through the baby’s first year. The mes-sages, which have been vet-ted by government and non-profit health experts like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Academy of Pediatrics and March of Dimes, deal with nutrition, immunization and birth defect prevention, among other top-ics.

(ARA) — School lunches will be changing, thanks to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s complete overhaul of federally subsidized school lunch pro-grams. But will all the changes be for the better? Possibly not, according to some experts and studies.

The changes, implemented over a period of years, aim to limit calories, reduce sodium and increase the consumption of vegetables and whole grains. “Improved nutrition is a laud-able goal, but the realities of sci-ence and nutrition may surprise the government,” said Morton Satin of the Salt Institute in Alexandria, Va. “Scientific stud-ies show that kids are more likely to eat their vegetables if they have adequate salt.”

“The promotion of healthy food choices in schools should be driven by knowledge and understanding of science and nutrition,” Satin said. Dark green vegetables are among the most nutritious foods. However, they all contain very bitter phytochemicals that affect their palatability. Broccoli is a perfect example. Adding salt to these vegetables makes them taste much better. “There is a natural concern by some as to whether the current salt reduc-tion ideology may end up hav-ing a negative impact on nutri-tious food choices and overall health,” Satin added.

A recent research paper from the University of Pennsylvania examined the response of tast-ers to varying amounts of salt in a range of foods that were naturally bitter, including veg-etables and other foods deemed to be healthy. Reducing the salt intake made these foods less appealing, and as a result adversely affected the tasters’ nutrient intake.

In another double-blind taste panel study conducted at Ohio State University, cooked broc-coli was fed to individuals from three different age groups: chil-dren, adults and senior citizens. The broccoli florets were pre-pared with different levels of salt and the results made it clear that, even though participants were unaware as to which sam-ple was which, salt significantly

increased broccoli’s palatability. Both children and seniors liked broccoli better with more salt on it — up to 350 mg per 85 g serving of broccoli, the highest level of salt used for these two groups. For both children and adults, the broccoli’s bitterness decreased as the level of salt

increased.“Based upon these results, it

is likely that policies promoting population-wide restriction of salt in foods may result in sig-nificant segments of the popula-tion responding by avoiding the more bitter, but far more nutri-tious food choices or simply

reaching for the salt shaker to make bitter better,” Satin says.

In the United Kingdom simi-lar actions backfired. Their gov-ernment outlawed the use of salt in schools in 2005. Writing in the UK Telegraph, journalist Paul Eastham complained that, since the school ban on salt-

shakers, his 14-year-old daugh-ter stopped eating vegetables, because they were so bland.

(ARA) — While today’s econo-my continues to put extra stress on most Americans’ wallets, those preparing to welcome a new child into the family expe-rience the added pressure of a whole new set of expenses.

2. Create a realistic budget. Determine the true cost of what you will need and weigh it against the new realities of your household income situation. This is particularly important if

3. Start and/or increase an emergency fund. The chances of unexpected expenses will become much greater once the little one comes on the scene.

4. Get protection through proper insurance. It’s time to face your own mortality and vulnerability. Protection is crit-ical. Consult with a financial representative to insure your health, property, income and life through appropriate insur-ance. In addition, consider a

The World Health Organization points to iodized salt as key to eliminating iodine deficiency disorders, one of the most common — and prevent-able — world-wide causes of brain damage. The WHO calls

iodized salt a “spectacularly simple, universally effective, wildly attractive and incredibly cheap ‘weapon’ against child-hood mental retardation.”

“Salt is a necessary nutrient,” Satin notes. “Without adequate intake, serious consequences arise. If the United States con-tinues down a path of forced sodium reduction, with no rec-ognition of the science indicat-ing many negative effects of such reduction, American chil-dren may have more serious worries than bland food and a diet lacking in vegetables. In some countries where pregnant

women and children do not consume enough iodized salt, cognitive development is a seri-ous problem in children. This is a problem remedied many years ago in the United States through the iodization of salt.”

While proponents of the school lunch sodium reduc-tion campaign may have the best of intentions for children, some science and health experts are skeptical. “I predict a lot of salad and vegetables will go in the trash can at local schools,” said Lisa Katic, a registered dietician. “This will not help us improve childhood nutrition.”

(ARA) — Most new parents relish the idea of any activity that helps their baby grow, develop and gain strength. And for the most part, babies are pretty posi-tive about those types of activities too — except when it comes to their intro-duction to “tummy time.”

“I’ll never forget the first time I put my son on his stomach for ‘tummy time’ like the pediatrician had recom-mended,” says Sarah Sawyer, a mother of three from Denver, Colo. “Within a few seconds he was red in the face and screaming at the top of his lungs. His lit-tle head flopped around and I could tell he was miserable. I was heartbroken that I had put him through this, and I knew I had to find a way to make the experience more fun and comfortable for him.”

In 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics began recommending parents put their babies to sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Since its inception, the Back-to-Sleep Campaign is credited with reducing SIDS deaths by 50 percent. With babies spending so much time on their backs, however, they may be miss-ing out on the important developmental and physical benefits of having time on their tummies. Plus, babies who lay on their backs too long may develop bald, or even flat, spots on their heads.

To combat these problems, pediatri-cians now recommend parents place infants on their tummies for supervised playtime. Newborns, however, often rebel against being placed on their stom-achs for play. Most babies eventually learn to enjoy tummy time as their motor skills and physical strength improve. Still, finding ways to make tummy time as fun and comfortable as possible — as soon as possible — can make the experi-ence more positive for both baby and

parents.Here are some tips for making tummy

time fun for baby and stress free for parents:

— Comfort is key. Make sure baby is dressed in comfy, loose-fitting clothes that allow ease of movement. Choose the floor surface carefully. Avoid hard or slippery surfaces. Consider using a play product specifically designed for tummy time, such as the Boppy Tummy Play Pad. Available in designs for boys and

— Company makes it more fun. While your baby is on her tummy, get down on the floor beside her, as close to her level as possible, so she can see you are with her. Remember, many babies object to tummy time because it limits what they

can see and do. If your baby sees you beside her -- making funny faces, offer-ing a toy or even just holding eye contact -- she’s likely to feel more secure.

— Start out slowly. Long periods on her tummy, when she’s not used to the position, can be stressful for any baby. Instead of attempting a marathon ses-sion all at once, ease your baby into the experience, starting out with a minute or less of tummy time. Pick her up, soothe and comfort her, and try again. And learn to read baby’s signs of when she’s had enough.

— Give her props. Giving baby a new perspective by propping her up under her arms may help make tummy time more fun for her. If your baby has some control of her head and neck, which often occurs by 4 months, a pillow under her armpits may give her the elevation she needs to enjoy tummy time. — Safety should never be secondary. Tummy time is ultimately intended to benefit babies by helping them develop strength and motor skills. Never leave a baby alone on the floor or any other surface; adult supervision is a must for safety.

Most babies learn to enjoy tummy time. “The time when babies are this helpless is so short and sweet, you’ll probably find yourself missing your baby’s tummy time days when he’s tod-dling around getting into everything he can reach,” said Sawyer.

(ARA) — Motivating your children to do well in school can be one of the most impor-tant — yet challenging — things you can do as a parent. If your children are inspired at a young age to set and achieve long-term goals, and earn good grades in the process, they’re more likely to succeed in the future. But igniting that spark is no easy task. Perhaps in addition to giving praise and a hug for good grades, you take them out to dinner or to their favorite amusement park. But cash and material items might be more motivational, a recent online poll indicates.

A majority of kids and parents backed "earning for learning." In fact, three out of four kids, and 60 percent of parents agree that incentives can help rein-force good behavior while help-ing children learn about money, according to the poll of more than 1,200 parents and children conducted by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation’s financial literacy website, Themint.org.

When asked which incentives might motivate kids, children and adults combined agreed that physical motivators like "cash rewards" (19 percent) and "desired items" (23 percent) like clothes, games or an iPod were more influential than experien-tial incentives like "a special dinner at a favorite restaurant" (12 percent) or "a trip to a theme

park, water park or other attrac-tion" (4 percent).

Parents may be encouraged to hear that kids ranked par-ents’ praise and encouragement comparably to cash rewards or desired items, garnering 27 per-cent, 25 percent and 33 percent support, respectively.

"Parents should take away from this the message that their praise and the positive examples they set are very powerful in shaping kids’ long-term habits, and rewards can provide extra inspiration for some students to succeed when it comes to report cards," said Janie Schiltz, of Northwestern Mutual.

Praise and rewards often work hand-in-hand. For adults in the workforce, paychecks and performance bonuses are great motivators, but praise and encouragement are also impor-tant parts of job satisfaction and can be drivers for good perfor-mance. Kids aren’t so different — many likely need both intrin-sic and extrinsic rewards to feel a full sense of achievement.

If you decide to provide rewards for school success, think about sitting down with your kids at the beginning of the school year or semester to agree about their goals and the rewards they’re eligible to

receive.When all is said and done, of

course, the decision is personal. Every child is unique, so par-ents should consider incentives that work best for their family.

Here are some tips to con-sider:

— Start by focusing on what you will reward. Is it focused on a specific grade? Improvement? Effort? An accomplishment? What is the timeline — the full school year or will you offer quarterly incentives?

— If you have more than one child, do you have differ-ent expectations for each child? What you expect for one child may not be the same expecta-tions for a different child.

— Talk to your children. Explain the expectations and the rewards. If a child under-stands what is expected and what the reward might be, he is far more likely to work for the reward.

— What kind of reward are you negotiating? The rewards may depend on the child. If your family does not eat out often, and the child thinks a restau-rant is a big deal, allowing the child to choose a restaurant as a reward might be a great incen-tive. For other children, financial rewards or prizes may be a bet-ter choice. Choose a reward that you are comfortable with pro-viding, and that is appropriate for the expectations.

— If your child receives a weekly allowance, consider a "bonus" for the child. For example, if the child receives a $5 per week allowance, give her an extra $5 as a one week bonus. For older students, you could consider a larger quar-terly bonus. This type of for-mat is similar to the way a bonus might be provided in the "adult" world.
