TGIS! Thank God it’s summer! It is a joy to write to you as Vocation Director for the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux as we move into these summer months! The summer brings many exciting things for our local Church. Some of my favorites are our parish summer camps and vacation bible schools, our annual Steubenville on the Bayou Youth Conference, Christian Leadership Institute, our Diocesan Come and See Retreats, the Pere Menard Canoe trip, and so much more.

The blessing that I want to focus especially on this summer is the presence of so many of our seminarians in our parishes. This summer will be a special blessing to the diocese because all but one of our seminarians will be serving in parishes. I would like to officially let you know where our seminarians will be.

Firstly, Deacon Cody Chatagnier will very soon be Fr. Cody Chatagnier and will no longer be a seminarian! I know he is ready to get to work as a priest of Jesus Christ!

Our men moving into 4th Theology will be starting their internships. Paul Birdsall will be serving at St. Hillary in Matthews. Brice Higginbotham will be serving at Christ the Redeemer in Thibodaux. John David Matherne will be serving at St. Thomas Aquinas in Thibodaux. And Jean-Marie Nsambu will be serving at Annunziata in Houma.

Our men moving into 2nd Theology are Patrick Riviere and Brett Lapeyrouse. Patrick will be serving at St. Fran-cis in Houma, and Brett will be serving at St. Mary’s in Raceland.

Our men moving into 1st Theology are Carl Hebert, Rusty Bruce, and Daniel Duplantis. Carl will be serving at Our Lady of the Rosary in Larose. Rusty will be serving at St. Charles in Thibodaux. And Daniel will be serving at Ma-ria Immaculata in Houma.

Nicholas Lecompte will be moving into his junior year at St. Ben’s. Nicholas will be serving at St. Joseph in Gal-liano.

Matthew Prosperie and Caleb Anderson will be moving into their sophomore year at St. Ben’s. Matthew will be serving at Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Golden Meadow. Caleb will be our only seminarian serving outside of the diocese this summer. He will be serving with Catholic Youth Expeditions in Greene Bay, Wisconsin.

Luke Robichaux will be leaving formation this year. I ask you to join me in praying for Luke as he continues to seek God’s will for his life.

Summer 2016 Seminarians | Letter from our Director

Right now we have 4 men who will be joining the seminary for us in the fall! These men are Dylan Lirette from Houma, Joseph Lapeyrouse from Houma, James Rome from Golden Meadow, and Deacon Joseph Lirette from Bourg. These men will continue to work and serve in their local parishes until they move into the seminary in Au-gust. We are so excited to welcome these new men and pray that the Lord will send a few more!

With all of these seminarians with us this summer, I think it is a good idea to remind the laity of Houma-Thibodaux of the importance of your role in priestly formation. The journey of priestly formation is a living process as the man moves through the seminary. Seminarians are constantly learning and growing in their understanding of what it means to be a priest. I believe that one of the greatest factors to this growth and understanding of the priesthood is the part that the laity play in this process. The laity helps shape the vision of priesthood in the seminarian. The laity are called to invest in the lives of the seminarians especially when they are in your parish. You invite them over to your house, you come and visit with them at the parish, and you share with them what you desire from your fu-ture priests. Through this mutual sharing of the experience of God, the Church, and the gift of the priesthood, the seminarian grows in his understanding of the people that he is preparing to serve, and how his formation should be modeled to reflect our people’s unique desire for God. So I encourage our laity: get to know your seminarian this summer. Invite them over for dinner. Make an appointment with them at their office. Let them get to know your children. Send them letters. Let them be a part of your family. Love them. But most importantly, pray for them. The Bishop chose your parish to send a seminarian to because he believes it to be an alive parish with people who love the Lord and love the priesthood. He is entrusting these seminarians to you so that you can teach them. May this summer be an awesome summer as our seminarians learn much because of your yes to teach, pray, and love.

In Christ,

Fr. Andre Melancon

Director of Vocations, Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux

We recently filmed interviews with our seminarians. Get to know all of them this summer! And pray for them!

Considering Priesthood? | We’re here for you.Hello men in discernment! It is a great blessing to write to you and let you know that I and countless other people in our diocese are praying for you! You are engaging in a process that every Catholic man is invited to engage in. To ask the Lord, “what do you want for my life?” is a good question for every Catholic man.

The Office of Vocations for the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux is here to walk with you in this process. I remember when I was in your shoes as a high school student trying to find out what the Lord wanted for me in my life. I felt that God was calling me to be a priest but I had no idea of how to go about discerning the call. The Vocations Office helped me to find the tools to discern well. Through my involvement in what the Vocations Office offered then, I learned valuable insights such as: What does it mean to be a man of God? How does a priest find joy and fulfillment in his life? How do I know if God is calling me to be a priest? How do I pray and begin to know God’s call and His particular love for me?

The Vocations Office continues today to walk with guys in their journey of discernment. Through our formation programs, retreats, and one on one mentoring, you will hopefully know that you are not alone in the journey of striving to follow Christ. Men, cast your net into the deep! Be not afraid! To follow Christ is to gain everything!
