Its that time of the year again. Spring is in the air, the weather is warming up and the aroma of cut grass is inspiring weekend warriors to come out of their winter hibernation, don the whites and emulate the heroics of their idols. Once again suburban ovals and offices are full of the sound of groans from stiff, sore bodies as amateur cricketers begin training and playing again and their bodies try to acclimatise to the rigours of our favourite summer sport.

The most common injuries seen in cricket include: lowerbackstrains, stressreactions, shoulderinjuries, hamstring,groinandsidestrains.

Cricket Australia (CA, 2011) injury data reveals, in junior fast bowlers, 37-55% of injuries occur in the lower back and stress fractures occur to 11-24% of these players as opposed to 4-6% of the general population. A 2003 study (Dennis et al) found that bowling less than 123 or more than 183 balls in a week and having less than two days rest between sessions were serious risk factors for developing these injuries. Another study (Orchard, 2009) showed that a spike in bowling loads resulted in low back injuries 3-4 weeks later!

Cricketers are notoriously bad at getting injuries seen to as, often, it may be 2-4 weeks before they have to bowl again. Rain delays often provide time for rest early in the season as do Christmas/New Year holidays and at the end of the season there is six months to recover. This often leads to players carrying the same chronic injuries from one season to the next.

Osteoporosis is a silent killer affecting more than one million Australians, according to partner at Lake Imaging, Dr Don Barrie, who is an expert in the field.Many people ignore the possible onset of osteoporosis until the symptoms are obvious, by which time it can be too late to change the course of the disease significantly. When osteoporosis strikes it can ruin the quality of a persons life or be fatal, he says. Osteoporosis is a disorder where bones become fragile and brittle which leads to a higher risk of fractures. It can occur when bones lose minerals, such as calcium, more quickly than the body replaces them. Its commonly regarded as a risk for women aged 70 and above but in truth there is no hard and fast rule to the normal age of onset, and close to 30 per cent of sufferers are male. We should all be alert to the possibility of osteoporosis from around the age of 50 if we are in a high-risk category. These include a family history of osteoporosis, having

a very slight frame, low bone density, and fractures resulting from relatively minor incidents. Early symptoms can include chronic skeletal pain and tendency to stoop. Dr Barrie says many factors can increase or delay the onset of osteoporosis but it pays to exercise regularly, eat sensible amounts of nutritional and healthy foods, and get bone density checked periodically from the age of 50. Lake Imaging uses ultrasound and DEXA Scans to measure bone mineral density through dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry - similar to a CT or MRI scan. DEXA is fast, emits very low radiation, and attracts a Medicare rebate for persons over 70 and those in high risk categories.

Its a good idea for owners of real estate to plan essential maintenance, particularly where safety issues

are involved. Here are a few hints:-

Fire authorities recommend testing smoke alarms once a month by pressing the test button - the alarm

should produce a beeping sound. Where necessary replace the 9V alkaline batteries, and replace all the

smoke alarms every 7 or 8 years.

Hot water tanks are fitted with a temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve, which stops excess heat

and pressure building up. It leaks out water when the temperature or pressure in the tank is too high.

There is a lever on the valve that allows it to flush lift the lever a couple of times to clear any obstacles.

If little or no water escapes or if it leaks after you close it, call a plumber. The valve probably needs

replacing.

Range-hood and air-conditioning filters get dirty and clogged, so they dont function efficiently. Remove

and clean filters according to the manufacturers instructions. A termite, or white ant, infestation is

definitely something you want to detect early. You have your eyes and ears, but licensed pest inspectors

have all kinds of detection instruments at their disposal. You need to be alert to tell-tale signs of their
