The most important finding is the fact that we would still have to maintain a full board of directors and it’s no surprise that we would have to raise our dues if SMR were to go outside to manage our homeowner’s association. The past two years have been rough finding volunteers to run for the board, but it appears that we have candidates for this year’s openings. So, let’s be hopeful that we always have the volunteers needed to manage our association without going outside. I like it the way it is and has been for 30 years……hope you do also. Nominating Committee

We have been successful in a/racting individuals to fill 2017 director vacancies. In addition, we continue our work to staff commi/ee chair positions that will be vacated at the end of 2016, as follows: Publication Chair: The Nominating Commi/ee has identified successors for our Publications Chair, Herb Burton. Herb took on a number of tasks that he has been performing as part of his Publications Chair duties so he will be replaced by several individuals. The changeover will be effective January 1, 2017, and will result in the following:

• Pat and Alan Frankle have agreed to produce the newsle/er. • Kathleen Flaherty will produce the Homeowners Guide and Directory • SMR’s Secretary duties will be updated to include production of the Annual Meeting Mailer. • Herb has agreed to continue updating our website. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Herb for his many years of service to SMR and for agreeing to continue updating our website. Our appreciation also goes to those who have agreed to cover production of the newsle/er, Homeowners Guide and Directory, and the Annual Meeting Mailer. Sunrise Association Council (SAC) Rep: Pete Read, SMR’s SAC Representative has notified the Nominating Commi/ee that he will be retiring from this position at the end of the year. The Council is composed of volunteer representatives from each of the twelve Fairfield Sunrise HOAs. These individuals work together to share information and ideas with one another and to influence county action in support of our Fairfield community. Susan Arbuckle’s article in this newsle/er provides additional information regarding the SAC Representative function. If you are interested in this position or if you would like to discuss it with us, please contact Pete, Susan or me. Many thanks to Pete for his fine service to SMR. Pete has provided support to our community by performing a variety of functions over a number of years including serving as SMR’s president for four years, 2009 through 2012. Resident Volunteerism: We’re pleased to announce that, after reading last month’s nominating article, Carol and Martin Alkin volunteered their assistance to SMR in any capacity that will be helpful and supportive to the community. The Alkins have lived in SMR for about one year and are part-time residents. Their offer was motivated, in part, by their belief that SMR’s self-management is far superior to what SMR would be offered by a management company. Thanks Carol and Martin! Thanks, also, to Barbara Halterman who has joined SMR’s volunteer ranks this month. Please see Susan Arbuckle’s column for specifics regarding these individuals as well as additional SMR community requirements that are in need of your a/ention. In closing, the Nominating Commi/ee continues to define, organize and document our volunteer recruitment and outreach efforts. As always, we encourage you to contact one of us to obtain additional information or to offer your assistance in maintaining our wonderful SMR community. You are also encouraged to a/end commi/ee meetings and/or monthly board meetings to gain a be/er understanding regarding the management of this community. Thanks in advance for your support! LandscapeSummer is almost here and the ice cracked in the Santa Cruz. Time to hunker down under the a/c and wait 'til fall. In the meantime: check out your trees and if you spy mistletoe, remove it. It spreads and does not do your trees any good. Keep watch on your drip systems. Remember the javelina tribe is out and about eating plants. If you have a plant they keep eating, consider removing it and planting something that will not attract them. They also turn over garbage cans and make a mess so the best thing to do is to put your cans out in the early morning the day garbage is picked up. Think twice  before you feed the birds; those seeds also attract

pack rats. And keep those rat traps set all summer. We are now working in zone 1 (Carrillo and Carrillo Hill) and replanting some areas with cacti and plants that do not use much or any water. We continue to do everything we can to lessen our water consumption. Those huge agaves are coming down now that they have bloomed. Thanks to all of you who appreciate our hard work. - Our zone reps are the very best and we all have a goal to make our neighborhood the most beautiful in the foothills (and I hear tell we are). Sylvia Burton, Chairman

RecreationTo all of you that have returned the pool chairs to their original locations after using them – THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. This has been “mucho” appreciated by our volunteer pool ladies. I hope you will continue to assist us with this request. I cannot ever thank our “pool ladies” enough for all their care and I know they in turn thank everyone who treats the pool areas as if it were their own to help keep tidy.Things are going well at both pools & spas so come get wet. Currently, the west pool ramada area is undergoing some painting work. It should be finished by the end of May.

Water aerobics is underway every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8:30am– no advance reservations needed, just show up. Same with yoga at 9:30am Wednesdays (try to arrive by 9:15). Please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 615-9669.

ArchitectureI want to welcome two new members of our Architecture Committee. Barbara Halterman and Martin Alkin. They will be a great asset to our committee. Thanks Barbara and Martin for volunteering to help our community. You are very much appreciated!Pouring rain and lightening storms happen in the Tucson Monsoon season. The desert quite often has quite spectacular rain and lightning during July, August and September. As a matter of fact, Arizona has more lightning strikes than any other state except Florida. The time to get prepared for these events is now, especially if you are not going to be in your home for the

summer. Here are some helpful tips that will allow you to enjoy the summer, whether you are here or in cooler climates.Tip 1: Make sure that you have electrical surge protection for your sensitive electronic equipment and phone lines. Higher capacity surge protectors are definitely more expensive, but they are far less expensive than damaged equipment or fire damage. Please note that all surge protectors have a limited capacity. It is very important to ensure that the TOTAL of what's plugged in does not exceed that labeled capacity.Tip 2: Have your flat and tiled roof areas checked for leak points and clogged drain openings, especially if your roof line has adjacent overhanging trees that shed leaves and branches. Flat roofs with blocked outflow can become really

efficient giant bathtubs and put pressure on any leak points. Make sure that you have it inspected well ahead of time in case you need to get it recoated before the rains arrive. You should have your tile roofs inspected thoroughly before Monsoon Season arrives to see if any of the tiles are cracked or otherwise damaged. It is very important to ensure all the tiles are in good shape to avoid leaks or improper drainage during the heavy rains that will come with the monsoons. A roof inspection should include checking soffit vents for obstructions or missing screens (an invitation to insects and unwanted critters). If vents are blocked or restricted, it can cause rafters to rot and affect insulation.Tip 3: Also look around the outside of your roof line and ensure that your external downspouts themselves (either the metal downspout systems or concrete "gargoyle" open spouts) are clear since they keep heavy rain runoff from pooling directly around your home's foundation. Tip 4: Check and clean the "weep holes" (cutouts for water drainage) in your masonry walls. A quick heavy rainfall can result in a LOT of water building up in yards in a short time and cause wall damage as well as yard flooding. Don’t plug up the weep holes to block snakes and other critters, instead place ¼” wire mesh screens in front of them. This will keep the unwanted critters out and allow the water to properly drain from the yard.By following these tips, you should have a worry free time either in Tucson or away. The Architecture Committee discovered a few Utility Boxes on SMR property (or easements) that are not the correct tan color. During the first week in June, we will have a contractor out to paint these Utility Boxes the appropriate color. Thanks to Andy Vall and Bob Cole for putting together all the bid documents and Andy for being the project manager. The Architecture Committee wants to thank all of you for your support as you work with us to keep Sunrise Mountain Ridge one of the most sought after communities to live in. Architecture Committee: Andy Vall, Art Schwartz, Bruce Friedman, Bob Cole, Barbara Halterman, Steve Jones, Jim McAlister, Martin Alkin, Bill Salisbury, Sandy Glasser and Larry Glasser.

RoadsThe spring roads projects have been completed satisfactorily. The crack sealing of the length of Camino Ferreo and the area in front of the clubhouse on Loma del Bribon was completed in one day on May 9. We attempt to notify the residents well in advance of any disruption to their homes, driveways and streets, and we appreciate the responses received from you; all of which help in the management of these projects. Please do not hesitate submitting your thoughts and suggestions to us regarding road projects in the future. Thank you to our Roads Committee: Mont Murry, Jim Kercheval, Todd Hansen and, in absentia, John Rourke. Good job, guys!

The last planned project for 2016 that may result in minor disruption to the SMR traffic flow is addressing safety concerns at the intersections of Via Colorada at both Paseo Penoso and Pico del Monte. We plan to add protective bollards at these locations and improving the look of the bollards near Via Colorada and Loma del Bribon. This project is being planned for later this year, probably into the fall months. The remaining activity for this year includes close observation of soil erosion on Camino de Carrillo and inbound Via Colorada. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at 303-877-5019 with your comments or suggestions. Have a pleasant summer. Respectfully submitted,Tom Triplett, SMR Roads Chairman

Neighborhood Watch As the lazy days of summer approach, many of us will be taking a break from the heat by vacationing in cooler locations. In addition, most of our snowbird neighbors will be or have already left for their summer homes. This is the time to be even more attentive to the activities in our community. If you notice running water, newspapers or other material collecting in front of a home, please call your Neighborhood Watch Block Leader directly or me at 299-2234.Strangers in our area, vehicles cruising the streets repeatedly, open doors or windows at residences you know are not currently occupied, and anything else

that looks suspicious should be reported to the police by calling 911 immediately. NEVER get personally involved in these situations or approach an individual who is acting suspiciously. The most important thing to keep in mind is to gain as much specific information as possible, including an accurate description of events, vehicles (make, model, color, year, license number), and individuals so that the police will be able to respond appropriately.Your Neighborhood Watch Committee wishes you an enjoyable, safe summer.

Hospitality CommitteeOn Sunday, May 22, 2016 the Hospitality Co-Chairs hosted a cocktail party at their personal residence for the new SMR homeowners that were able to accept the invitations. The new SMR homeowners that attended the party all had positive comments about our area and Association. They all seemed to enjoy meeting the board members that were in attendance and are looking forward to enjoying the SMR community and the upcoming events.

As you know, many of our residents are seasonal or traveling, so we are not scheduling any Hospitality events for the next month. We are working on scheduling events for the second half of the year and will be posting some of those in newsletter next month. Please watch the July newsletter for scheduled events and dates. Volunteer Coordinator

Summer is upon us here at Sunrise Mountain Ridge, and although there are fewer of us here, volunteers are still serving the community whether from a distance or close at hand. Technology is a wonderful tool to keep us connected with the committee work that continues year round. We have board and committee members who leave for the hot summer months but still stay involved with their committees from afar. Committee positions open up year round and we would like to thank Barbara Halterman and Martin Alkin for recently joining the Architecture Committee. We are presently searching for someone to step into Pete Read’s role as SAC

Representative for 2017. Pete has kindly written a description of what the position involves. Sunrise Association Council

SAC is made up of the twelve Sunrise Communities within Fairfield. Each HOA appoints its own representative to the Council and in some cases there is more than one representative. As SMR representative, I attend each meeting and if a research project is developed I then act as the resource person from SMR. Additionally when topics are of interest to one of our Board members, I request them to attend the meeting as well. The council has no official status and was formed to be a means for the 12 HOA’s to share information concerning the operations, governance and problem solving. As it now stands, SAC has three meeting per year between October and April; the meetings start at 5:00PM and are for one hour only. The meetings are generally held at the SMR Club House but can be held at any convenient meeting place. In the past there was a ten dollar charge to each of the HOA’s but with the advent of e mail and thus no mailing costs there are no charges. This past winter there were three meetings and the topics were Roads, Security (Pima County Sheriff’s Department) and Reserve Funds. Sandra Nelson of Sunrise Territory Estates is the Chairperson of SAC and is responsible for setting the meeting dates, the topics and the administrative needs of the organization.Pete ReadIf you are interested in learning more about this position, please contact:Susan Arbuckle - 299-0658Carmen Wiswell - 299-2234Pete Read - 615-8545_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

www.sunrisesnap.org

SNAP provides core services (transportation, meals, caregiver relief etc.) year around. As most clients do not leave Tucson for extended periods during the summer, we remain busy and always appreciate summer volunteers willing to help on a temporary basis. SNAP is in the midst of planning activities and programs for its 2016-17 year. While our mission is to help residents age in place in their own homes for as long as possible, we also know that may not be possible for every resident in our community. A “Plan B” for more supportive housing is vital for each of us to design and keep on the back burner, in case it is needed. It is unfortunate when a health crisis occurs and someone else must make decisions for us.Residents often have questions about senior living facilities in Tucson. Beginning in September, we have scheduled Facility Tours for a variety of senior living accommodations — independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing facilities and memory care homes. Reservations will be limited; please let us know of your interest in participating in these Tours PDQ via the SNAPLine at 437-9556 or [email protected]. One of the greatest advantages of these Tours is that you will have opportunities to see various facilities in a group, ask questions, and discuss your thoughts or concerns with friends or neighbors; additional information will follow. If you have suggestions for topics for the upcoming Senior Living Education Series, please share them via one of the SNAPLines above. As always, suggestions for change or improvements are appreciated. It’s never too hot for the Lunch Bunch to gather at the SMR clubhouse. Please bring your own lunch and join us on June 29th from 11:30 – 1 PM. Dessert and a beverage are on the house.
