Households had to collect fresh water from wells in Ann Siang Hill and Spring Street using bullock drawn cart, giving rise to the Chinese name for Chinatown – “Niu Che Shui” or “Bullock Cart Water”. Today, Chinatown is still a hub for Chinese culture, featuring colourful street decorations during major Chinese celebrations such as the Lunar New Year and the Mid-autumn Festival.
