INTRODUCTION
Richard Finnie was born in Dawson, Yukon Territory, the son of Oswald Sterling Finnie,Director of the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Branch from 1921 to 1931 of theDepartment of the Interior and Nellie Louise Roediger whose father founded the “Dawson DailyNews”in 1899. The family moved to Ottawa in 1909 where R.S. Finnie attended local schools. From 1924 to 1927 he worked as a reporter for the “Ottawa Citizen” where he produced anumber of articles on the Arctic.
Richard Finnie made five expeditions by ship to the eastern Canadian Arctic which lead to hisrecognition as an authority on the geography and history of the Arctic and Northern Canada.
His first expeditions were with Captain J.E. Bernier in 1924 and 1925 as radio operator on thelast expeditions of the C.G.S. ARCTIC during which he received his first training as acinematographer from George Valiquette the cameraman. Afterward Bernier gave the ship's bellto Finnie who presented it to the Bernier Museum at L'Islet, Quebec. In 1928 he received hisfirst commission to produce the film "In the Shadow of the Pole" from the Government MotionPicture Bureau. He served on the Burwash Expedition to King William Island, one of the firstCanadian air expeditions in the Arctic, and produced a series of films in 1930 and 1931 during atwelve month assignment in the western Arctic for the Bureau. In 1937 he produced films on theArctic while on the Eastern Arctic patrol on the NASCOPIE which covered the meeting of theNASCOPIE with the AKLAVIK from the west at Bellot Island. Another early film that heproduced was a 1935 film that he made with Dr. Marius Barbeau on rural Quebec.
Finnie was accustomed to producing his own films being cameraman, editor, narrator andproducer. In 1942 Finnie left the National Film Board after producing a final film "CanadaMoves North" which he also made into a book. He published the books, “Lure of the North”1940 and “Canada Moves North” in 1942. In that year, he was hired by the Engineering firmBechtel Corporation to act as northern adviser and documentary filmmaker to the U.S. ArmyEngineers on the construction of the CANOL Project and the Alaska Highway. He produced thefilm "the Alaska Highway" and also films on the CANOL pipeline.
Richard Finnie worked for 25 years with Bechtel Engineering and Construction retiring as theirofficial historian and film producer in 1968 after producing some 60 films as well as publicationssuch as “Bechtel in Arab Lands” and articles on Bechtel projects all over the world for theirperiodical “Bechtel briefs”.
After the Second World War Finnie was involved in filming and promotion for notable oil andnatural gas pipeline projects in Canada in which Bechtel was involved. These involved routereconnaissance and construction films for the Interprovincial Pipeline from Alberta to Ontario, the Transmountain Pipeline from Alberta to Vancouver, the Westcoast Transmission Pipelinefrom Alberta to Vancouver and the states of the Pacific Northwest and the TransCanada Pipelinefrom the Prairies across northern Ontario to southern Ontario and Quebec in the period 1950 to

1955. Films resulting from this work include "Canadian Pipeline" "Pipeline in Progress" and"Oil Across the Mountains". He also produced some films on Labrador iron ore and theHamilton Falls power project in 1963 and 1964
As well as motion picture films Finnie took extensive numbers of photographs. One of hisphotographs of the Transmountain Pipeline, a notable engineering achievement of its time wasused as the frontpiece in the November 1952 issue of “Fortune” magazine.
After his retirement he continued an active life, lecturing and publishing articles on the Yukonand the Northwest Territories as well as continuing his career in photography. He made at leastnine trips to the North after his retirement in the period 1972 to 1982.
His marriage to Alyce Robert of San Francisco ended with her death in 1965. He is survived byhis wife Anne Ackerman Finnie. A sister, Dorianne Eltinge and her family of Cincinnati, Ohioalso survive.
