Advantages and ApplicationsWhy have SMW Front Operated Power Chucks steadily in-creased in popularity?1. Air is introduced into the pneumatic clamping cylinder, which is an integral part of the chuck, by means of specialCircular Sealing Rings which are patented throughout theworld. This construction means that all chucks have a com-pletely unobstructed through bore.
2. The double-acting piston enables external and internalchucking to take place thus achieving versatile applicationfor all chucking and bar work.3. Simple quick mounting and removal of the chuck permitsmachining operations on both one-off and batch work. Thisversatility facilitates flexible production planning.4. A great deal of time is saved when loading and unload-ing components. This saving in time per component morethan compensates for the initial cost of the chuck.5. Operational safety is guaranteed by certificates issuedby supervising authorities. Maximum safety is also main-tained, when the spindle is running, by the clamping pres-sure retained in the enclosed cylinder, the self-lockingdouble wedged piston, and the electromagnetic locking ofthe push buttons actuating the control unit. All further requirements of the supervising authorities re-garding operational safety are met by an electro-pneumaticsafety control unit type PSS 10 and corresponding electro-pneumatic safety control unit type SP-EPK-10-24.6. At high speeds the reduction in clamping pressure, brought about by centrifugal force, is limited to a minimumby a self locking double wedge action.7. The high clamping forces which are attained from aline pressure of 85 p.s.i., together with the self-sustainedpressure in the chuck aimed at repeated clamping con-
centricity, are further recommendations for the applicationof our chucks to a wide range of machines such as centrelathes, copy lathes, N.C. lathes, turret lathes, semi-automa-tics, indexing machines, special purpose machines andgrinding machines. What design characteristics make the SMW type SPChuck outstanding?1. The location and centering of the Distributor Ring bymeans of a resin based Centering Ring presents a troubleand maintenance-free solution to the centering of theDistributor Ring.2. The patented Circular Sealing Rings are hard wearingand deform in a radial direction at an operating pressureon only 14 p.s.i. which facilitates the machining of thin wallcomponents at low clamping forces. The clamping force isproportional to the line pressure.3. The twin non-return valve, the "vital part" of the chuck,is a fully enclosed unit but very accessable and inter-changeable within seconds.4. All chucks are dynamically balanced after assembly, andpermit high speeds. Specials are available for extremelyhigh speeds.5. The chuck is easily dismantled for cleaning and main-tenance, this applies particularly to the Distributor Ringsystem. The back location plate which incorporates thestandard H6 location register can be exchanged for a shorttaper direct mounting plate.6. Special care was taken during design to preventingress of swarf, dirt an coolant.More than 16000 SMW Power Chucks are used on lathesof all types in many countries and prove the reliability ofthe design and quality of the product.

The problem of air feed is solved by using a stationaryfloating Distributor Ring with Circular Sealing Rings. It iscentralized by a resin based Centering Ring. Through airfeed holes in the Circular Sealing Rings air flows into oneof the two pressure chambers. The twin non-return valvecontrols the air flow to one pressure chamber simultaneouslybleeding the other chamber. The piston is forced forwardby air pressure in the chamber and actuates the master jawin a radial direction by means of the double-wedge action. The pneumatic pressure in the chuck is cut off from theline supply by the non-return valve and remains in the chuck(selfsustained clamping) until the control signals the chuckto open. The Circular Sealing Rings are lifted from the chuck
body while it is running by the release of air pressure whichis made possible by bleeding the supply hose. This actionprotects the Circular Sealing Rings against wear.
Life, concentricity, and clamping force of the SMW PowerChucks, Type SP are maintained by using high grade ma-terials, modern production methods and careful inspection.Chuck body and piston are drop-forged, the jaw guide waysinduction hardened and ground. The master jaws, the har-dened reversible jaws, piston and guide bushings are case-hardened and ground. The finished chuck is dynamicallybalanced.
Mounting to spindle nose locations
The various internationally used spindle nose locations re-quire different mountings, some important types are de-picted below. The various adaptor plates which are required for chuckswhich cannot be mounted directly, are finish turned to suitthe machine spindle nose. On the chuck side the flangesare pre-turned plus an allowance of 0.5 mm so that theymay be finish turned when mounted to ensure absoluteconcentricity.
It is possible to change the Back Location Plate of SMWType SP Chucks from one type of register to another. Thisfacilitates the use of SMW Chucks on machines with diffe-rent spindle nose locations. Back location plates withvarious registers are always available from stock.
Direct mounting in accordance with British Standard Spindle^rFlanges No. BS 739 can also be supplied.

Three control units are available for SMW Power ChuckTypeSP:
Electro pneumatic control Type SP-EDE 38Electro-magnetic manual control unit, 220 V- 50 Hz or110 V-60 Hz. Includes, in one unit, push buttons (open & close), airfilter, regulator, pressure gauge and lubricator. Plug in terminalfor spindle safety interlock is standard. A second terminal, forwiring to remote control by foot pedal (SMW type F2/U2/UN)or additional push buttons, is also included. Push buttons (orfoot switch) must be depressed manually until chuck hascompleted its cycle. Maximum recommended air pressure is145 p.s.i. Pneumatic fittings are R %".
The SP-EDE 38 control unit coupled with the design featuresof the SP chuck (i.e. clamping pressure retained in the en-closed cylinder and the self-locking double wedged piston)meets the high safety standards of the supervising authori-ties.
The electro pneumatic safety control unit type PSS 10 (max.8 bar) incorporates a pressure control switch which ensuresthat the system is only operational at a pre-set working pres-sure. The unit includes a pressure regulator, 2 solenoids, 2airflow sensors and 2 transducers.
The sensors monitor the flow of air to the chuck and the stopin airflow after the clamping cycle is complete. The changein airflow and the corresponding change in voltage of the
sensors is evaluated by transducers which activate the sole-noids interlocked to the spindle start control.
The PSS 10 control is operated by a short impulse via a foot-switch and is electrically isolated during spindle rotation toprevent accidental unclamping. Furthermore the starting of thespindle during a clamp or unclamp cycle is prevented.
Voltages: 220 V/ 50 Hz, 110 V/ 60 Hz or 24 V. Pneumatic fittingsare %".
The SMW electro pneumatic control unit type SP-EPK-10-24,up to 10 bar, meets all the regulations as defined by the safetystandard authorities. This system is contained within 2 panelswhich include all the controls, valves, and monitoring devices. The unit is complete with 8 metres of cable for interface to themachine, 3 indicator lights and a clamping pressure gauge.24 V supply and R Ул" pneumatic fittings.
The following functions are assured:
The actuation of the chuck is guaranteed by flow switcheslocated inside the control unit. The safety control unit is ope-rated by short impulse via hand or foot controlled impulsegenerator and contains: control valve for imput pressure, airfilter, pressure regulator, lubricator, switch for external or inter-nal clamping, option for power or manual clamping, indicatorlights for monitoring pressure, clamping cycle and spindlerelease. The unit itself is also electrically isolated duringspindle run and during the clamping cycle.
