Letter to the

Community

As we kick off our 169th year, our mission statement has never held more significance. We will continue to provide social services of the highest quality to those in need in the many communities we serve throughout Massachusetts.

The upcoming year finds us making a fervent commitment to internal and external critique, creativity and cooperation. We will con-tinue to enhance strong partnerships across all programming within our agency as well as with our many community allies. We recog-nize the importance of the involvement and investment of both public and private area leaders in our mission.

We have continued to enhance and grow each of our programs as the community needs come to our attention. During this past fiscal year we were awarded funding for a new program, Young Parents Believe & Achieve (YPBA), designed and funded by the Depart-ment of Public Health. This program offers comprehensive services for pregnant and parenting teens in the city of New Bedford. In order to offer a complete continuum of services for these teens, Child & Family Services has entered into formal agreements with the New Bedford Public School Department and the Greater New Bedford Community Health Center.

Our strongest and most vital asset in responding to the needs of children, adults and families is our incredible group of staff, volun-teers, interns and Directors who all recognize the uniqueness and inherent worth in each individual who seeks service from our agen-cy. They are the foundation on which we continue to build. Through their dedication, professionalism and consistent efforts, Child & Family Services has continued to weather the storm of the country’s economic crisis. Our fiscal strength is a direct result of our ability to adapt to change while maintaining effective models of service.

We dedicate this annual report to Melody Walsh, one of the most energetic and committed persons to walk through our doors. Melody first volunteered for our Holiday Hope Project in 1993. The project initially provided assistance to 150 families. Last year, Melody, along with our other incredible volunteers, organized the Project to provide a total of 554 families and individuals with gifts and food for the holiday season. Melody set the high standard for all of us to live a life full of compassion, commitment and the ability to always smile and laugh through tremendously difficult times. On August 9, 2011, Melody passed away following a valiant battle with cancer. Her spirit will live on in all those who knew her.

Our Grant Partners Have Continued to Help Child & Family Services Provide:

Big Brothers/Big Sisters mentors to at-risk kids in the Greater New Bedford area at no cost to families.

Free counseling to children in the Greater New Bedford area traumatized by witnessing domestic and/or community violence.

Free counseling and support for Cape Cod child victims of sexual and/or physical abuse.

Free parenting skills education and information to young parents in New Bedford and Fall River.

Loving adoptive homes to special needs and older children.

One of the primary roles of the Friends of Child & Family Services is to raise funds to support the agency. Monies raised go directly to specific programs and projects at Child & Family Services to enhance services and help us continue meeting the needs of our growing community.

*Caring Network and Cape Net programs are funded in part by the Massachusetts Office of Victim Assistance through a Victims of Crime Act of 1984 (VOCA) grant from the Office for Victims of Crime, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice.

Our services help people find ways to cope and manage their lives. We provide services that help children and adults create support systems to increase their ability to function in their homes, schools, and community. We help people suffering from depression, anxiety, behavior and mood disorders, as well as severe psychosis. All of these can affect daily living and if left untreated, may result in hospitalizations, impatient treatment, or suicide.

Changing Lives, Restoring Hope, and Strengthening Families

Child & Family Services’ mission supports healthy relationships between parent and child, and this guiding principle drives all of our family support services. Studies document that more than any other factor (including income level, ethnicity, mother’s education level, etc.), daily positive parental involvement in a child’s life is the most important predictor of success (or failure).

Abuse can take many forms, be it bullying or family violence. Our mental health and outreach programs teach skills to prevent and end violence, and support the victim in their recovery.

Mental illness is challenging for anyone, especially young children. The symptoms of mental illness can interfere with family relationships, making friends, and social interactions. Through intensive treatment, family support programs, and school-based counseling, we provide the tools to overcome emotional and psychological problems.
