STEVEN NEDERVEENATMOSPHERES

At its heart, Steven Nederveen’s most recent body of work is a meditation on the duality of water. Combining photographic techniques and painting, his mixed media panels are thresholds between worlds. Water is at once dynamic and still, timeless and ephemeral, spiritual and wildly physical. It is the above and below, the most elemental symbol of nature unbound, and in its depths lies transformation.

Perhaps it is no surprise that Nederveen has long revered the immersive atmospheres of ocean and sky. The son of an avid sailor and consummate gardener, he was raised with a love for the natural world that is evident in his fascination with the refraction of light through water and with the wonder of a moody cloudscape. While his work begins with a photograph, the photo is so distressed and obfuscated by textured layers of paint that the piece becomes the emotional, dreamlike memory of a place rather than documentation of a physical reality. Therein lies the magic, with the passage of time and the shifting ground of immutability brought not only to the subject but to the process itself.

Steven Nederveen studied fine art at Medicine Hat College and went on to receive a Bachelor of Design from the University of Alberta in 1995. He is a well known Canadian artist with work featured internationally in galleries, art fairs, magazines, tv programs and private collections. He is based in Toronto, where he lives with his wife and son.
