2016 DECEMBER
S.N.H.O.G. Officers 2016
DIRECTOR’S SADDLE
Well it is December already. I can’t believe the year is almost over. We had some great rides this year. A lot
of new places, and some of our traditional overnighters. Speedo’s Devils Highway was one of my favorites
along with the Williams Overnighter. The Beatty BBQ Bash was a huge success and we even got to get to
know some of the people from Black Mountain. The day rides were a lot of fun too. Going through Gun-
lock Loop for a piece of pie, Seligman for a chocolate malt, or a brown bag lunch at Dante’s View. They were
all great. The planning committee really stepped up this year.
We have quite a few new members join Southern Nevada Chapter this year. Talk to them and encourage them
to ride with us. They are the future of our chapter. We also lost some members this year. Weather they
moved, retired, or just found other ventures. They all will be missed. When past director Tom
Westdorp passed away in March this year, we all came together for his service. There were about seventy mo-
torcycles and one hundred some members that came to pay their respects to his family. The chapter passed
around a hat and collected thirteen hundred dollars to donate to Tom’s favorite charity. We donated 1,300 dol-
lars to the Nation of Patriots in Tom’s name. I have missed Tom, he always made me laugh.
It’s been a real honor to be your director this year. I could not have done it without the great team behind me.
My two Assistant Directors, Wayne Crouse and Roddy Hopper. They have helped me with anything I asked
of them. Thank you. My Treasurer Minnie Watson, who did a great job, even though she had to ask me for a
few receipts that I forgot to give her! Thank You Minnie. Peace Girl! My Secretary Deb Dartois. I would
not have made it through the year without you Deb. Thank You. You Rock! Our Chapter Manager Steve
Richie, thank you Steve for encouraging me all year. You kept telling me, “you can do this!” My meetings
were a little shaky at first, but towards the end became a lot easier. My Lead Road Captain this year was Glen
Oelrich. Thank you Glen for staying on as Lead for a third year when I asked you to, and for all the hard work
you put in this year. Sandy Backus stayed on as Membership Officer this year for me, and I couldn’t asked for
anyone better. Thank you Sandy Two Feather. Kris Scott, thank you for doing the Activities Officer position
this year. I know it is a lot of work blocking hotel rooms, making all the restaurant reservations, and working
on the calendar all year long. You did a great job! Our Editor this year is Beverly Madrid. Beverly, you did a
fantastic job with the newsletter this year. Thank You. Maybe the next Director can get their Saddle article to
you in a more timely fashion than this one does. Susy Hopper was our Ladies of Harley officer this year.
Thank you Susy Q. To all the Ambassadors and Photographers who put in their time and helped to make 2016
a great year for the Chapter, a great big Thank You! It takes all these officers and you the members to make
Southern Nevada HOG Chapter great.
I would also like to thank the Dealership for giving me the opportunity to be the 2016 Director for the chapter.
It was one of the best years of my life.
For the new officers coming in for the 2017 board, I want to wish them well. If there is anything I can help
anyone of you with, please ask. I know I had a lot of help from past directors and officers.
RIDE SAFE AND HAVE FUN!!!
2016 SNHOG CHAPTER
DIRECTOR
DIRK SMITH
I have heard a lot of compli- ments on how the Road Cap-
tains do their job of safely conducting the rides. All of us Road Captains have a strong dedication to doing that
and we work hard doing that. Every month we review the previous month’s rides to improve our performance.
We have periodic Road Captain training days – although this year the weather was very uncooperative. But
there are things you as a rider in the group can do to make our jobs easier and your ride safer.
First is passing hand signals. When the Ride Lead throws up a signal, there is a reason he/she needs the infor-
mation passed. Whether it is as simple as changing lanes or as important as an obstacle in the road, it is im-
portant that the members in the group behind you get the signal. In the case of the “hands up” at the beginning
of the ride, everyone needs to give the signal after the one in front. That way the Rear Lead knows everyone is
ready to leave. For a moving hand signal, it is no less important but less critical for everyone to pass the sig-
nal. If one member is not giving the signal, pass it on – but not if several members are not passing the signal.
That way the riders behind you will know the situation.
Second is following the hand signal and the bike in front. This is obvious for obstacles. You will not usually
know why a signal is raised unless you are listening on the CB. But if you are listening, do not anticipate the
maneuver. When the Ride Lead puts the group in single file to bring Rabbits up, it is very important that you
follow the bike in front and be in the right track. If there is oncoming traffic the Rabbits need to use the left
track. If single file is for an obstacle, follow the bike in front to avoid the obstacle.
Third is maintaining position. The stagger formation is designed for your safety. What I am referring to is
gaps. A small gap encourages cars to use that gap. When a car is in the group, it often obstructs the hand sig-
nals the Ride Lead might give. In the case of an obstruction, you won’t have notice and the car may run over it
and throw it into the air. Ouch. A longer gap raises the possibility that that the Ride Lead and the Rear Lead
will not be able to communicate – particularly if there is a large group.
Fourth is your own head checks. As hard as we work to control traffic, motorist don’t always cooperate. I have
seen cars pass on the right shoulder and go into oncoming lanes to get around the group. We can’t do anything
about those drivers. So, you need to protect yourself by always doing your head checks.
To change subjects, I also want to congratulate Dirk on becoming our newest Road Captain trainee. This year
he has been on in unofficial training having had to lead a ride to Panguitch and having helped in the rear. I’m
glad we talked him into waiting a year so he could be the Director. So, if you see him wearing a yellow arm-
band and the Director rope, that is why.
After three years, I will not be the Lead Road Captain next year. I have enjoyed doing
that and will remain active as a Road Captain. But time for new blood as Lead RC and a
bit of a break for me. And that four-letter word “work” is looking to draw me away even
more in 2017 than 2016. I want to thank all the Road Captains for their support, but in
particular, Speedo and Mark as my Assistant Lead Road Captains.

Photographs are such a great way to remember events in our lives. Our SNHOG Event Photo

few minutes, anyone is able to quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round!
Although Roland and Cinda are our official Chapter Photographers, they are obviously not the
only ones taking pictures at our events. If you have photos you would like to submit for the gal-

and date of the event must be included in the email. Be sure to visit our online Photo Gallery at
