BSSC Boardof DirectorsConnie’s Corner

May is here and with it brings change.....but good change!

First of all, our one May meeting on the 4th will be held at the ever-popular summer meeting site, The American Legion Yacht Club on the water in New-port Beach. Elections will be held for next year’s Board of Directors, followed by dancing under the stars to our very own member-DJ, John Symes.

At this meeting you will also have the opportunity to:1. Purchase your ticket for the year-end Banquet, a Mexican Fiesta, to be held Saturday, May 22nd, 6:30 p.m.2. Pay your deposit for next season’s FWSA January ski trip to Sun Valley ($400 check made out to BSSC).3. Purchase your ticket for the July 17th “Cirque de la Symphonie” performance at the Verizon Ampitheater (Irvine Meadows). $25 buys you an awesome Terrace Level seat. So don’t wait....tickets are limited! Checks for this event must be given directly to me, please, in order or me to manage the number of tickets committed.4. Purchase a raffle ticket for the special end-of-the-year raffle! Grand prize is a 2 night, 3 day stay at Mammoth’s Juniper Springs resort, with 2 rounds of golf at the Sierra Star Golf Course. Winner can redeem the “prize” anytime between June 1st and October 31st, 2010.

The second big “change” this month will include a new location, day and time, and greatly reduced price for our end-of-the-year banquet, featured on the front cover of this issue. It will be held at the Bayside Village clubhouse off Bayside Drive in Newport Beach and, the “FIESTA” theme will include food ca-tered by “Mi Casa”. Your new Board of Directors will be introduced and mem-ber recognition awards will also be presented. Don’t miss out on the festivities and be present for the drawing of the winning raffle ticket!

The last change during May will be the installation of a newly elected Board of Directors. This group of club members are your representatives who make important decisions with the club’s best interests in mind. So it is your respon-sibility to make your voice heard by sending in your ballot or by attending our May 4th meeting with your ballot in hand.

Finally, I’d like to personally thank this year’s Board of Directors for their hard work, devotion and unselfish service to the club. I couldn’t have done it with-out you!

Connie Peacock, BSSC President

Membership RenewalYou will receive your annual ballot and your membership renewal. Your dues are due on May 1 and can be paid un-til June 30 without the $15 late charge being added. Act now for a big bargein - Balboa dues have not been raised since 1992 — very few can make that claim. Pay your dues promptly and volunteer to support this great club of ours.

Mammoth March WeekendTrip RECAP...

Balboa Skier Johnathan Earls celebrated his 21st birth-day at our Friday Night Cocktail Party. Pleasant, helpful, fun and adventuresome, Johnathan is a delight to our members and his mom Franchesca who surprised him with a cake and snowboarding lessons. Franchescsa enjoyed skiing with Balboa members Cindy McKenzie, Barbara Jacobson and Janine Bender.

Nina Winn, Penny Jones, Lee Lewison, orange flags flapping in the breeze, were seen cruising the mountain under clear skis and bright sun. Beautiful and happy Sue Crawford enjoyed exploring the mountain with Kyle and Gary Montooth. Sisters Karen Stuber and Kelly Wingood basked in the great snow and short lift lines. As always, Alan Lawrence was seen on his favorite runs. It seems that Terry King is a woman to follow down the mountain since she now can can see the run signs with her new

prescription goggles. Barbara Snider, who now resides in the Bay Area enjoyed reconnect-ing with Balboa Skiers. Ed Murphy introduced Cathie Schaeffer’s son and grandson to the thrill of the Cornice. Cathie is still on the no-ski list following ACL Surgery. She will return for the 2010-11 season.

Amy Mettheny was a new face on our Balboa trip. Bill Clark, Judy Chapel, Christy Walchi, Joanne Seabach and other members intro-duced Amy to Mammoth. Amy told her new friends about growing up and learning to ski in Nacagno, Japan. Joe Edwards and Brian Do-navan shared ski adventures over a glass of wine. As Always, the Yodeler was the après ski meeting spot.

It was great having Dawn McDowell on another Mammoth Trip. Dawn introduced us to her spe-cial friend, Jim Criswell. Jim is a nice skier and was always willing to help in the kitchen, on the mountain or on the bus. We hope you enjoyed your first trip Jim.

Kathy Mendival, guest of Cindy Garcia gave Cindy lessons on carving a nice turn. Kathy Yeargin was spotted at the Mill Saturday morn-ing with a huge cookie and a cup of coffee. Always outgoing, Kathy helped everyone feel relaxed and comfortable at our cocktail par-ties. Party girl, Christie Walchi and a group to ten skiers headed into town on To check out the Nightlife. Maxine got up early to work on her racing so wasn’t seen often.

Next season, will be here before you know it, give some thought to inviting friends you miss and inviting new skiers share our adventures.

Balboa Race Team ActionRacing is over for this year, but the pride in a great team does not fade so quickly. March brought the Southern California Championships (SoCalcs) and on April 10 and 11, the Far West Racing Association Championships (aka Finals) to our home mountain, Mammoth Mountain Resort.

Balboa members hold the majority key spots within Schusski Race League. With Dave Mashaw rising to Class 1 Vet in the Southern California Cham-pionships in March, and racing with honor in the Finals to the other great racers who represented our club in such a fine fashion, we give you accolades—great job.

Balboa racers came , raced and put forward their best in March and April. Chris Adams, a new member went from 3 Open (under 50) to 2 Open with a strike at Finals. Gary Seaton and Art Pressel were a strong presence in 2 Vet and scored many points. Terrie Seaton, our highest ranking woman at Class 5, started four times and in three races brought home three golds. Mae Lon Ding raced 6 Vet and in a tough class, scored points in all races and a third in SoCalcs.

Jim McGee at 6 Open, placed gold in all four races and got a strike on Sunday. Robert Re-vet rejoined us at Finals and while racing 6 Open placed 2nd. Robert got a second strike, and he will be racing 5 Open, in the 2010-11 season. Izzy Goberman, a strong presence at 6 Vet pulled in points and two thirds in a very completive class at FWRA Finals. Christy Walchli won three golds in Class 7 Open, and had fun trading spots with the Open racer for 2nd and 1st at Finals.

Steve Webb started SoCalcs racing 9 Vet , bumped up to 8 Vet and at Finals scored two 2nd Place wins in 8 Super Vet. Al Lawrence did well at 8 Vet pulling 4th place finishes at SoCalcs. Betty Donel-lan placed 2nd and 3rd wins in 8 Vet, and had 4th place finishes at Finals . She is planning on Race Camp and bringing Bob with her to the race cours-es next year. ( It’s in print- Bob!) Jim Hughes, ( sweetie that he is) came and raced on Saturday at Finals to win points and gold at 10 SV.

Maxine Hanlon had a so – so SoCalcs at 10 Vet, but a much better Finals with a gold both days. Many thanks to the Pacesetters, Dave Mashaw, Gary Seaton, Art Pressel, Izzy Goberman and our Terrie Seaton. Thanks to Bob Donellan for his help in all

four races, and also thanks for help at the Finals of Mae Lon Ding, Izzy Goberman and Dave Mashaw. Schusski brought 20 racers which was the same number as Ullr, one less than Rokka, one more than San Diego, and only 13 less than Open who had top numbers. Most of these league exceed our numbers by double or triple. Well done to all for the dedication and hard work . The e-mails are flying, and the race dates are be-ing set for the 2010-11 season. Finals next year will be the first weekend in April at Alpine Mead-ows. Join us next year, just try out a course or a clinic and you can see what fuels the team.( See the first fund raiser on Sat, June 26- ideas welcome- we need money to race and support our team.) Thanks to all of you for a great year. See you on the course.

Maxine Hanlon
