The Challenge for Merchants

For distributors and merchants the task is particularly difficult, because the information in a distributor’s catalogue probablyoriginates from hundreds of different sources (i.e. manufacturers and suppliers).

In catalogue creation, the core problem is that different suppliers use different standards (taxonomies, data normalisationtechniques, data formats, file formats, media formats and delivery mechanisms) to create, store and present their information.

Assembly of the information needed to launch a product catalogue is a highly demanding task.To be successful, electronic catalogues need to make the process of searching for and selectingproducts a simple task – which can be achieved quickly and with a minimum of keystrokes..

Repository vs managed database

CONTENT FOR CATALOGUES

In fact, to make matters worse, informationfrom individual suppliers:

l Is often not structured or not uniformly structured

l If structured, is structured differently by each supplier

l Is often not computer readable (can only be read and interpreted by humans)

l Rarely has all the required components of product information assembled together in one place (a single file, or record within a file or other point of reference).

What is needed is a way to retrieve all the information about aproduct from a single request. The scope of the informationmight include various codes (including EAN numbers), productdescriptions (both short / meaningful ones and extendeddescriptions), attributes like size, colour, dimensions etc.,product features and benefits (bullet points), links to multipleimages, links to other media and documents (product andCOSHH datasheets) and details of how the product conforms tostandards such as BS, EN, CEE, FSC and WRAS etc... – and much, much more, on e-Xact a product can have over 150 attributes.

In our 12 year’s experience of operating e-Xact we have yetto find a supplier able to provide this level of productinformation in a format that could be easily used by an end-user’s systems (product file, back office system or onlinecatalogue).

The Repository Approach

One example of a repository used in the merchant sector isbased on Alfresco – an Open Source Content ManagementSystem. Putting information in one place is a starting pointthat allows suppliers to upload information and users(merchants) to download it for use in their back-office systems

and in web catalogues.

All the required information may be available. However, if thereare few (or no) rules about data formats, other standards anddata file contents, allowing each “uploader” the freedom toupload whatever they want to upload, then the data will be ofhighly variable quality and the “downloader” will be left to tryand sort out the problems. Some of these problems aredetailed in the chart comparing repositories with databasesystems later.

At best, the repository approach offers a good alternative tosuppliers and merchants exchanging emails with attachedfiles. At worst, the approach represents an anarchical way ofgathering and distributing unstructured productinformation.

The e-Xact Database Approach

The key strength lies in the fact that the information iscontained within a managed database. The inputs of data canbe in variable formats but the data is managed (assessed, validated, enhanced, manipulated, and aggregated frommultiple sources/ formats). The data is published in a standardformat, regardless of the received format.

Some of the key benefits are shown in the chart opposite >

Page 3: Snowed under maintaining data? - e-Xact Online · Snowed under maintaining data? See Page 2 Wow!Win a £150Voucher See Page 16 for details Welcome our new team member- Page 3 I n

There is a cost to the e-Xact approach – whilst some of the validationof the information is automated - error correction, dataenhancement, manipulation and aggregation requires extensivehuman intervention.

The e-Xact business model relies on the principle that it is moreeconomical for the data manipulation and management to beundertaken once (by e-Xact) rather than many times over by eachindividual user of the data.

Celotex's Specification Manager forLondon, Adrian Fryer, presented theCelotex Part L CPD at The BuildingCentre on the 8th December 2011.With an excellent turn out of over 40delegates and some well thought outquestions raised at the end of thesession, the decision to offer thisopportunity to single practiceArchitects proved to be a success.

At Celotex we looked to create an event thatwould reach all specifiers, as many practices are

unable to hold alocal CPD andtherefore often missthe opportunity to

update on

thelatest

developmentsand solution guidance.

With Part L 2010 being achallenge for change to the Building

Regulations, this was an excellent way toreach all.

This type of seminar gave Celotex the chance topresent the Building Regulations along withCelotex solutions. We were also able to presentthe new Celotex FR5000 product and reallyengage with the audience. At the end of thepresentation a question and answers session washeld which proved very successful with greataudience participation.

After the event a free lunch was held foreveryone, which delivered great networkingopportunities for all. We at Celotex wereoverwhelmed with the success of the event andare already looking to plan another event for laterin 2012.

As market leaders, we hope to beable to hold similar events aroundthe country so we can give everySpecifier the chance to attend aCelotex CPD.

Rockwool hails ‘huge success’ ascampaign raises over £100k in 2011

When renovating, the bathroom or kitchen arenormally the first places in need of someattention due to the high levels of moisture theyendure. But when choosing a replacement tilebacking board a gypsum-based product may nothave been considered in these areas, until now.British Gypsum has developed a new technologythat’s set to change the way we work in areas ofhigh moisture. Market manager, Kate Seddon, explains how this is going to help the industry. “British Gypsum’s new technology is a huge stepforward for the tile backing board industry andgives end users a lightweight and easy to usealternative to existing boards on the market. 11 years ago we began developing GlassReinforced Gypsum (GRG), a well known

advancement of traditional gypsum. Theapplication of this technology led to the productionof Glasroc F – a range of high performance boardswith exceptional strength, fire protection andsurface finish. However to introduce a productsuitable for areas of high moisture, water resistancewas an essential element. Enhanced GlassReinforced Gypsum (eGRG) was created to meetthis requirement whilst maintaining the samequalities as GRG products.“

“Throughout the development of the technology,an extensive testing programme was undertakenthat included total water absorption and surfacewater tests. This ensured eGRG addressed thethree major customer requirementswhen using tile backing boards inareas of high moisture; waterresistance, ease of installation andstrength.“

For more information regarding theproduct or eGRG technology, please visit www.british-gypsum.com/glasroc-h-tilebacker

Board & Insulation

Versatile, strong and easy to use, the KnaufDrywall range of High PerformancePlasterboards delivers complete panelsolutions: from simple space division andseparating walls, to lift shaft protection and X-ray shielding.

Manufactured from the highest qualitygypsum, these boards incorporate specialadditives that enhance their acoustic, impact,fire-resistance and moisture-resistanceproperties so they can achieve requiredperformance levels with a reduced number ofcomponents and plasterboard layers.

For example, Knauf offer a range of solutions toachieve the 40dB Rw with a single layerpartition that meets the requirements ofApproved Document E, including Knauf

Soundshield which makes it possible to achieve40dB Rw possible without the need foradditional insulation, so saving time andinstallation costs on site.

Knauf Impact Panel not only provides a superb, durable finish but is also easily repaired shouldany damage occur – making it ideal for highlytrafficked corridors such as in schools andcolleges. Impact Panel can also be combinedwith other Knauf products to give a superioracoustic performance of up to 57dB (Rw).

Fire protection too can be simplified using theKnauf Fireshield range ofpremium plasterboards whichcan achieve a one-hour fire ratingwhere two layers of standardWallboard would be required.

An introduction to Knauf’s rangeof premium High PerformancePlasterboard is available in a two-page brochure leaflet from themanufacturer.

Knauf offers the right board forevery application

Think thermal

The Government’s Green Deal, which takeseffect in October 2012, will allow homeownersto make energy-saving improvements with noupfront costs, making investment in thermalinsulation affordable and attractive. There’s abig opportunity here for merchants who reallyknow the market, and can advise builders andlocal authorities on their options. So what doyou need to know?

There are a whole range of thermalplasterboards, each of which caters to aparticular refurbishment need. LafargePlasterboard’s GTEC Thermal Board is wellplaced to meet the needs of projects where theaim is to make initial improvements to energy-efficiency credentials. The board is bonded toexpanded polystyrene, giving a 470% boost tothermal insulation over standard plasterboard.

Some projects will, however, require a boardwith higher levels of thermal insulation. GTECThermal XP Board is the next step up andprovides a 600% improvement in thermalinsulation over standard board. Like GTECThermal Board, it’s suitable for using with a drylining solution to upgrade external masonrywalls or upgrading existing constructions suchas loft spaces.

High-performance boards are the option formeeting the criteria set out in Part L of theBuilding Regulations. GTEC Thermal K Board isbonded to phenolic foam andfeatures a vapour control layer asstandard. This helps it to providea 780% boost in thermalinsulation compared to a standardboard – enough to meet thecriteria set out in Part L of theBuilding Regulations without theneed for additional thermalinsulation.

Sound advice and choice forevery applicationAt this year’s NMBS(National Merchant BuyingSociety) Exhibition, KnaufInsulation will bepresenting its wide rangeof high performanceinsulation products onstand 165. As the UK’sleading manufacturer ofinsulation products, andthe only producer of four different types ofinsulation, visitors to the stand will receive expertadvice, whatever the application.

The 2010 changes to Part L1A of the BuildingRegulations have placed an exceptional focus ontightening elemental U-values for the buildingfabric and a key area for meeting these targets isthrough a full-fill mineral wool approach. Full-fillinsulation solutions account for a large percentageof the market for external cavity wall insulation andprovide a number of benefits in terms of a costeffective solution in comparison to other optionssuch as renewables. In addition, an equivalentthermal performance can be achieved to partial fillrigid board solutions (but at a lower cost), as well asbeing BBA certified for use in all exposure zones - allbacked up with a 50 year performance guarantee.

In particular, theunprecedented focus inPart L on the thermaleffect of party wallcavities – party wallbypass – now requiresconsideration. Aneffective U-value of 0.20W/m2K can be achievedthrough effective edge

sealing. A more beneficial effective U-value of 0.00W/m2K can be achieved by fully filling the cavity. Inorder to help merchant’s customers meet the newrequirements, as well as demonstratingcompliance with Part E for party wallbypass, Knauf Insulation will bepresenting its full-fill solutionssuitable for meeting therequirement for both masonry andtimber frame construction.

Demonstrating Zip’s commitment toongoing innovation, the company’smarket leading HydroTap range ofinstant boiling and chilled filteredwater systems has been upgradedto provide an increased number ofboiling cups per hour together withan unlimited supply of cold filtereddrinking water.

All of theproducts in theHydroTaprangeprovidingboiling waterwill have thisincrease inperformance, with theexisting modelsbeing replacedby the newones during thefirst quarter of2012. For example the existing B100F nowbecomes the B160F, indicating that thenumber of boiling water cups per hourincreases from 100 to 160.

One of the limitations associated with thesupply of chilled filtered water from suchsystems as the Zip HydroTap is that the volumeof water available is dependant upon the sizeof the chilled tank. When this is drawn off, thesystem would take time to refill and re-chill.This would be okay in most circumstances, butthere could be situations, for example in anextremely hot spell of weather, when demandexceeds the capacity. Zip have solved this bythe introduction of the PLUS model, which willby-pass the chill tank, if this capacity isexceeded, with a “free-flow” alternativeproviding filtered cold (ambient) water untilsuch time as the chilled water is againavailable. This upgraded facilitywill become available on all of theHydroTap boiling and chilledproducts during the first part of2012, replacing the existingproducts.

Part of the concentrated 500ml ‘F’ range, the newFernox Central Heating Energy Saver F6 is aningenious and innovative chemical watertreatment product. Independently tested, FernoxEnergy Saver F6 has been developed to improveheat transfer efficiency and contribute to lowerenergy usage within traditional central heatingsystems.

The product’s performanceimprovement arises as a result of layingdown long chain polymers within theheating system. This has a dual effectof reducing the size of nucleatedboiling gas bubbles that form on theheat exchanger (adding an additionalinsulation layer to the surface) andsmoothing the internal surfaces of theheating system resulting in an overallreduction in drag.

The new Fernox Central HeatingEnergy Saver F6 is not an inhibitorpackage; it specifically improves heattransfer efficiency contributing tolower energy usage and improved systemefficiency. Using the new product can result in agas consumption saving of 0.8% on unscaledboilers and 1.2% on scaled boilers.

Available from all leading merchants, one bottlewill treat a 100 litre system (up to 10 singleradiators). For maximum benefit, Energy Saver F6should be used after a system has been cleanedand powerflushed using Fernox Cleaner F3 or forheavily contaminated systems, Cleaner F5,alongside treating the system with Protector F1.For continual protection, inhibitor levels shouldbe checked annually. A central heating systemmay also be topped up at the same time with

Energy Saver F6.

Groundbreaking in the context ofchemical water treatment, FernoxCentral Heating Energy Saver F6 workson the same principle asfuel improver additivesalready successfully usedin the automotiveindustry for many years.

The installation of four Caspian, two Space Saverand three Ecovector High Level (HL) fanconvectors from Smith’s Environmental Productshas been completed at The Church on EttileyHeath Community Hall.

Two Space Savers were neatly fitted into theplinth of units in the church’s kitchen, eliminatingthe need for the existing, inefficient panel

radiators. “The Smith’s fan convectors replacednormal wet type radiators, and we have noticed areduction in our heating bills,” Edna added.

One Ecovector HL fan convector was installedinto the gentlemen’s lavatory, while one wasinstalled in the ladies’, and one in the disabledlavatory. Fitted unobtrusively above head height, the Ecovector HL makes maximum use of wallspace whilst providing a safe, high level source ofheat.

Because of the huge success of the Smith’sEnvironmental Products heating system, we havecommenced installing three Caspian 120/12 floormounted fan convectors in the church, inaddition to two Smith’s Ecovector HL 1000heaters in the vestry and old boiler house toreplace the extremely old oil fired system. Weused to have to time the oil system to come on at

3am for the Sunday morning service, but we’reconfident the Smiths fan convectors will take lessthan half an hour to warm the church.

Originally built in 1888 as a Primitive Methodist church, in 2003 theMethodist church joined with thelocal Anglican Church St. Peter’s,Elworth to serve the ever growingcommunity which is made up ofmixed ages.

The Grade 2 listed Durlston Castle has justreceived a £5.5 million facelift helped by a grantfrom the Heritage Lottery Fund. Twyford Bathrooms launches the UK’sfirst truly rimless WC developed forthe home - the Moda Rimfree®.

This is one of the most notable landmarks in theevolution of WC design since Thomas Twyfordinvented the Unitas: the first one-piece, allceramic, freestanding wash out WC in 1883.

Boasting excellent design and contemporarystyling, Moda Rimfree® has set new standards ofhygiene and water efficiency in the bathroomindustry. Traditionally, water is jetted around thebowl of a WC and channelled by an overlappingceramic boxed or hidden rim. While this designhas always provided a perfectly good flush, theimpossibility of cleaning beneath the rim haspotentially provided a place where germs could

lurk. With the Moda Rimfree® (above), there is noneed for a rim because of a uniquely engineeredwater distribution system. The result of years of

careful engineering by Twyford Bathrooms’ in-house design team, the Rimfree® designefficiently removes all waste as effectively as atraditional toilet.

The self draining jets at the back ofthe bowl release water which flowsentirely round the inside of thepan, and with no hidden rim thereis simply nowhere for the germs tohide. This makes the pan ultra-hygienic and easy to clean, settingnew standards for toilet hygiene.
