SnowShoeing at CraterS of the Moon national MonuMent I saw an Outdoor Idaho show about the program they have for winter visitors. I heard about free snow shoeing opportunities and called the Craters of the Moon office to find out about it. I was able to schedule an opening in February 2010. An option was to snow camp the night before but the scouts opted to drive over early in the morning because of sports and other activities. The youth are so busy now days! It was a unique opportunity that the boys liked. Craters of the Moon National Monument in winter

SnowShoeing at CraterS of the Moon national MonuMent

I saw an Outdoor Idaho show about the program they have for winter visitors.

There is a website with information about snowshoeing and cross-country skiing: https://www.nps.gov/crmo/planyourvisit/winter-activities.htm. We followed the groomed trails for a while and then ventured off to climb to the top of a cinder cone. I’m guessing we went about four miles on the loop led by one of the Rangers. He did a great job telling us about the park along the way. Now we can say we’ve snowshoed to the top of a volcano. It was near the end of February so the snow wasn’t as deep as we wanted but it still made for a fun adventure.

The crew (seven boys and four leaders) being taught by the Ranger that led us
