Where This Kit is Used You can use this kit to install a snubber board on the SCR assemblyour drive.

What This Kit Contains This kit contains a snubber board assembly and these instructionsSCR assembly testing and replacement information is included inthese instructions.

How to Use These Instructions To install a snubber board on your drive:

1. Determine the rating of the drive, refer to “Drive and OptionIdentification” on page I-7.

2. Access the SCR assembly, refer to “SCR Assembly Access” opage I-11.

3. Install the snubber board, refer to “Snubber Board Installation”on page I-20.

If your drive is not working correctly, refer to “SCR and DiodeAssembly Test” on page I-23.

Safety Precautions

!ATTENTION: Some printed circuit boards and drivecomponents may contain hazardous voltage levels.Remove and lock out power before you disconnect orreconnect wires, and before you remove or replace fuseand circuit boards. Verify bus voltage by measuring thevoltage between the Negative Capacitor Bus and bothends of all fuses. An open fuse does not show voltageacross both ends of the fuse. Failure to measure voltagat both ends of the fuses may result in death or seriouinjury. Refer to Figure I-6. Do not attempt to service thedrive until the bus voltage has discharged to zero volts

!ATTENTION: Potentially fatal voltages may resultfrom improper usage of oscilloscope and other testequipment. The oscilloscope chassis may be at apotentially fatal voltage if not properly grounded. If anoscilloscope is used to measure high voltage waveformuse only a dual channel oscilloscope in the differentiamode with X 100 probes. It is recommended that theoscilloscope be used in the A minus B Quasi-differentiamode with the oscilloscope chassis correctly groundeto an earth ground.

Electrostatic Discharge Precautions

Electrostatic discharge generated by static electricity can damagecomplimentary metallic oxide semiconductor devices on variousdrive boards. It is recommended that you perform these procedureguard against this type of damage when circuit boards are removeinstalled:

• Wear a wrist-type grounding strap that is grounded to the drivechassis.

• Attach the wrist strap to ground before removing the new circuboard from the conductive packet.

• Remove boards from the drive and immediately insert them inttheir conductive packets.

Torque Sequence When mounting components to a drive’s heat sink,component-fastener torque sequences and tolerances are crucialcomponent-to-heat sink heat dissipation.

The following illustrates temporary and final tightening sequences fcomponents fastened to a heat sink using two, four, and six screwTemporary torque is 1/4 (25%) of final torque. The numericillustration labels are for your assistance. Drive components do nocarry these labels.

!ATTENTION: This assembly contains parts and subassemblies that are sensitive to electrostatic dischargStatic control precautions are required when servicingthis assembly. Component damage may result if youignore electrostatic discharge control procedures. If yoare not familiar with static control procedures, referenceAllen-Bradley Publication 8000-4.5.2, GuardingAgainst Electrostatic Damage, or any other applicableESD protection handbook.

!ATTENTION: Component can be damaged if thetemporary tightening procedure is not performed tospecification.

Snubber Board Installation Important: The assembly is shown removed from the main frame fclarity. It is not necessary to remove the IGBT and Prechargeassembly from the main frame to do this test, or to install the RCSnubber Kit.

4. Position the copper plate, provided in the Snubber BoardInstallation kit, over the screw holes in the bus bar.

5. Attach the plate to the bus bar and reconnect the original blackwire. Refer to “Torque Sequence” on page I-4. Refer to “TorquSpecifications” on page I-11 for final tightening.

6. Attach the Snubber Board to the Bus Bar. Finger-tighten thescrews, alternating from screw to screw, 1/4 turn at a time. Refto “Torque Sequence” on page I-4. Refer to “TorqueSpecifications” on page I-11 for final tightening.

7. Route the new white wire from the Snubber Board, through theopen channel under the heat sink, and to the other side of the HSink Assembly bus bar. Refer to Figure I-11.

8. Remove the nut from the stud on the other side of the Heat SinAssembly bus bar and connect the white Snubber Board wirethe stud. Refer to Figure I-11. Refer to “Torque Specifications”on page I-11 for final tightening.

Replace the heat sink guard. Assemble the drive in reverse order oremoval. Refer to “Torque Sequence” on page I-4. Refer to “TorquSpecifications” on page I-11 for final tightening.

SCR and Diode Assembly Test 1. The IGBT and Precharge assembly is shown in Figure I-12. Thassembly is shown removed from the main frame for clarity. Itnot necessary to remove the IGBT and Precharge assembly frthe main frame to do this test, or to install the RC Snubber Kit.

2. The Diode and the SCR heat sinks must be electrically isolatefrom each other and from the rest of the power circuit, to propertest the individual components.

3. To isolate the Diode from the rest of the power circuit, remove thU-shaped bus bar that connects the Diode heat sink to the SCheat sink, refer to Figure I-12.

4. To isolate the SCR from the Capacitor Bank, remove theprecharge to spine flex bus, refer to Figure I-12. Disconnect thSCR gate lead and cathode lead connector. This connector islocated in the wire harness between the precharge board andSCR.

5. Remove the four screws that hold the heat sink guard in place.Pull the guard out about 25 mm (1 in.), or just far enough to gaaccess to the lower edge of the SCR heat sink.

6. When testing the Diode or SCR it is important that the Diode anSCR clamps be at their normal torques.

7. Resistance or voltage checks made on the Diode or SCR heatsinks must be made to the heat sink aluminum base plate, notaluminum fins, refer to Figure I-12. The heat sinks have an epobonded fin, and many of the fins are NOT electrically connecteto the aluminum base plate.

10. The Diode and SCR checks in steps 7, 8, and 9 above show arange of acceptable values. These values will vary dependingthe type of meter used, analog or digital. Most analog meters dnot have a diode scale, while most digital meters do. In generaDiode should never be shorted from Cathode (1) to Anode (2). ASCR should never be shorted from Cathode (4) to Anode (3). ASCR should read a relatively low resistance from the Cathodeor 4) to the Gate (G). An SCR should never read open resistanfrom the Cathode (C or 4) to the Gate (G).

SCR and Diode Assembly Replacement

1. If a Diode or SCR require replacement, the entire upper or lowheat sink assembly must be removed from the IGBT and Pre-charge assembly steel frame. Remove the heat sink guard completely. Remove the square shaped bus bar on the left side ofIGBT and Precharge assembly, refer to Figure I-12. Remove thscrews that attach the precharge back-up plate to the steel frafour screws for the Diode heat sink, two screws for the SCR hesink (Figure I-13).

2. Once step 1 is complete, the screws that hold the heat sink toprecharge back-up plate should be loosened one or two turns,not removed. The heat sink clamp nuts can be removed. Notepolarity of the Diode or SCR and remove the defectivecomponent.

3. Apply two drops of silicone oil to each side or face of the newDiode or SCR. Clean any dirt off of the original heat sinkmounting surfaces. Install the new Diode or SCR, with the sampolarity as the original component, in the heat sink (refer toFigure I-13). Tighten the clamp nuts to 28 N-m (240 in.-lb), whilholding the heat sinks flat against the precharge back-up plateTighten the precharge back-up plate to heat sink screws to 9 N(75 in.-lb).

4. Install the heat sink into IGBT and Precharge assembly steelframe. Tighten the precharge back-up plate to IGBT andPrecharge assembly steel frame screws to 9 N-m (75 in.-lb).Install the square bus bar removed in step 11, tighten the nutsbolts to 28 N-m (240 in.-lb). Install the U-shaped bus bar that wremoved in step 3 and tighten the nuts to 28 N-m (240 in.-lb).Install the precharge to spine flex bus that was removed in stepand tighten the nuts to 28 N-m (240 in.-lb). Reinstall the fourscrews that hold the heat sink guard in place and tighten the nto 3 N-m (26 in.-lb).

5. Re-connect the SCR gate lead and cathode lead connector. Thconnector is located in the wire harness between the prechargboard and the SCR.

6. This completes the Diode and SCR test and replacement.

Important: Refer to your Service or Troubleshooting Manual forIGBT Module test information.
