PLEASE MAKE YOUR GIFT TO THE 2021 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

Come, follow me… and bring hope to the world. Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes and schools who

receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible. The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world.” This is especially important during these trying and challenging times. Many in our parishes are affected financially by the pandemic, and we encourage giving at all levels to support this initiative. When we financially support the work of our parish, our archdiocese and the Catholic Church throughout the world, we experience a feeling of deep gratitude, especially when we contemplate God’s many gifts to us personally. By sharing our wealth through gifts to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal, we demonstrate our commitment to the Church and each other.

    4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Moses announces to the people that God is going to raise up a prophet from among them, and they must listen to his words. The prophet will speak only what the Lord commands, and in this way will be an instrument of life and health. John the Baptist announces his coming; Jesus is anointed by the Spirit to speak to the people. When they hear him, they are hearing God, and hearing the truth. It was immediately obvious to the people in the synagogue at Capernaum that Jesus was different from the Scribes. They were used to religious teachers explaining the scriptures; they were used to being told about the Law; they were used to being harangued about how to live. But with Jesus, they realized they were in the presence of someone different. They could not describe exactly what that difference was. But he spoke with authority. There was integrity about his words that led them to believe he was genuine. And as if their surmising was not enough, Jesus demonstrated dramatically his power. The unclean spirit had no problem recognizing Jesus; like the congregation in the synagogue, it heard his words and recognized his authority. It fled, and the man was set free. No wonder the word spread throughout the countryside. Here indeed was something entirely different. The power of God’s word, spoken directly, was plain for all to see. We know that not all who heard Jesus were convinced by his words; the human heart sometimes hears only what it wants to hear. Jesus never shouts or demands to be heard. He lets those who have ears hear. We know that words, as well as harming, can heal. The well-chosen word can comfort, bring forgiveness, show love, and set free. The inspired word can teach and spur to goodness. Responding to bad news, words can bring good news, Gospel news. So talking can be therapeutic. But as Christians we believe more. We believe that when we talk in the spirit of Christ, obedient to God, we can work miracles. Just as Jesus spoke with authority, people of faith can speak with authority too. Not like the Scribes who seemed to use their positions as teachers to rule and control; but like Our Lord, who used words to encourage and inspire. If we meet unclean spirits, in the darkness in our souls or the souls of others, we need not be afraid. Christ is Lord of all, even of places that seem dark and impenetrable to us. His word of authority can overcome all. And his word can be our word too. When it is one of integrity and truth; when it is spoken humbly and in love, then it has the authority of Christ. It is a healing word, a word wounded people in a hurting world so desperately need.

    ASH WEDNESDAY

The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 17. Attendance is limited to 125 guests. You must pre-register to attend 8:00am Mass and our Prayer Services at 10am, 3:30pm, and 5:30pm on our website. You can also view the 8am and 10am services on the St. Cletus Parish YouTube channel.

    CHRISTMAS DONATIONS 2020

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart! Because of your generosity at Christmas, we collected over $207,000. Given all of the challenges and changes due to COVID, we were able to exceed the Christmas budgeted amount by $7,000. This greatly helps to absorb the extra cost of cleaning supplies and associated expenses. Thank you for living and giving of yourself in the name of Jesus Christ; for sharing your generosity and unique gifts and talents with our parish; for coming to church as we strive to connect with each other and help one another to grow in faith and service; for staying connected to the Catholic faith by attending virtually, when you were unable or not ready to return. And finally, thank you for supporting the ministries of the parish so that we can continue to help those in the greatest need, especially during these difficult times. As one parish community, we take the journey of faith together united with God's love. May God continue to bless and care for you and your families throughout this coming year and always. Love And Blessings To All, Fr. Bob Pastor

    Religious Education

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION? In January, our RE Families have been focused on the Sacrament of Baptism. From hearing about the Baptism of Jesus at the end of the Christmas season in mid-January, to our family lesson on the Spirit of Belonging we have been learning about this first Sacrament of Initiation. We all need to belong to someone or something to feel connected and not alone. First and foremost, we all belong to God. We are a special part of God’s family through the Sacrament of Baptism. It is the sacrament of belonging. One of the activities that our families participated in at home was a mock baptism. I have included some of the photos we received here. Our parents had a wonderful time teaching and showing their children how to perform a mock baptism on their favorite dolls or action figures! Families then took the opportunity to show their children photos from their own baptism, and to share the story of when they were baptized. We are so blessed to be children of God!

    Sunday Notes

FALSE PROPHETS, TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice, the Holy One of God. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous. We also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. And today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words filling our mouths. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

As tax time approaches, we ask everyone who would like a year-end statement of their Year 2020 financial offering to the parish to fill out the form below and drop it in the collection basket after Mass, or simply call the Parish Office at (708) 352-6209 and leave a message. Please include your name, phone and envelope # or address in your message. You may also email [email protected] and submit your request electronically. Rather than mail statements to everyone in the parish, it seems more prudent and conservative to only mail them to those who need them for tax returns. Ministry News BOOK DISCUSSION

The next book discussion will be at 7:00 p.m. February 9, 2021 We will discuss Happiness is a Choice You Make by John Leland. For those who like to look ahead:

    JOIN OUR ROSARY COMMUNITY

I was a faithful “tabernacle side, up front” participant at the 11:00 Mass. You knew the “regulars” around you and knew when someone was missing (are they sick?) or when their

relatives came to visit. It was just one way that a larger parish became smaller, more welcoming. This is one of the things I miss as we celebrate socially distanced Masses on our new schedule (all very necessary) is that sense of community. But this is also one of the things that I love about saying the Rosary together at 1 o’clock each Wednesday. We have a faithful group of parishioners who join together in prayer. We share our intentions and pray for our families, parish and nation. We invite you to join us whenever you can. It is always good to sign in on the website, but come and unite with us in prayer. Sometimes I laugh that we are on a Zoom call with Mary, but how wonderful it is to take a half hour out of your day to spend with Our Mother. You are also welcome to make a reservation and come before the Lord in private prayer during this time; the church is open for us all. We will be waiting every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. for you to join us.

    COMPASSIONATE CARE MINISTRY

The Compassionate Care Ministry is again badly in need of postage stamps for its notes of sympathy and support during the first year following the loss of a loved one. Each bereaved family receives six cards during that year. This means that if there are ten funerals during a period of one month, 50 stamps are needed in that month alone. Your generous donations have meant so much in the past and we are very grateful. If you are able to contribute to this worthwhile ministry in this way, it will be very much appreciated. Simply place them in an envelope marked CCM and put them through the slot in the rectory door—or drop them in one of the collection baskets located at each exit in the church building.

    ENROLL IN ELECTRONIC GIVING

Do you want to transition away from writing checks and contribute electronically? It is SO EASY!
