As Dean of the School of Arts and Communication at Pacific Lutheran University, I welcome you to our 2012-2013 season. This year we are extremely pleased to be able to present one master brochure, combining all Music, Theatre, Gallery, and focus Series events. This exciting change ensures that you receive information for all of our fabulous events and also helps us become a more environmentally friendly organization.

I encourage you to visit our new website, where you’ll notice a dynamic new look and features. You’ll be able to comment on stories using Facebook, watch videos, and browse photos – an exciting and interactive virtual soac connection. Our events calendar is more robust and we’ll be updating frequently with sneak peeks.

September 5 - October 3Earth, Sea, Sky: Selections from the Permanent Art Collection

Featuring work in a variety of media, this exhibition showcases expressive, realist, and even abstract landscapes drawn from PLU’s Permanent Art Collection.

October 10 - November 7The Physicality of the Present: Ann Johnston Schuster and John McCuiston

In the work of these two artists, we see figures made vulnerable by the physical and emotional constraints placed upon them. Ann Johnston Schuster’s prints present vulnerability not as a constraint, but as a link to our humanity. John McCuiston’s sculpture moves between history and myth, ceremony and humor.

November 14 - December 12Student Juried Exhibition

Exceptional work by PLU’s student artists, chosen by guest jurors, is featured in the fall semester’s final show.

February 6 - March 6A Retrospective Exhibit: 100 years of the art of Keyes and Cox

Professors emeriti from the Department of Art and Design display a lifetime worth of works. Dennis Cox’s career has involved drawing, printmaking and water-color while David Keyes’ work consists of ceramic sculpture and vessels, cast and fabricated bronze/mixed media techno-archaic sculptures.

March 13 - April 10Each Form Overflows its Present: Paintings by Elise Richman and Cynthia Camlin

Cynthia Camlin and Elise Richman engage in painterly processes that evoke water, ice, and geological processes. Camlin captures ice’s crystalline structure and the primordial depths of ice shelves, conveying environmental concerns. Richman’s process driven work references the local marine environment in order to express interconnectedness andstates of flux.

April 24 - May 25Senior Exhibition

Join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of thegraduating artists from the Department of Art and Design.

Join us for an opening reception from 5-7pm on the first night of each exhibition. Light refreshments will be served.

Also visit the University Gallery Annex in the Anderson University Center, which will showcase a complementary collection for each gallery exhibition.

This event will be held in Olson Auditorium.

The Work Continues: Phase II of the Karen Hille Phillips Center for Performing Arts Phase I is complete and Phase II is now underway. The new facility will include 630 new seats, all with improved sight lines, a new stage with fly loft space and orchestra pit; enlarged lobby and gallery; new faculty offices; elevator access to all floors, climate control and other modern amenities. Grand opening will be in Fall 2013.

Buried Child, winner of the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, depicts the fragmentation of the American nuclear family in the context of the 1970s rural economic slowdown, the breakdown of traditional family structures and values, and the disillusionment of the American dream.

studio theaterseriesThe 2012–2013 theatre season is focused on a few of theatre’s great literary successes. What’s more, each play looks at life in rural America through a different lens and shows us the themes, values, relationships, loves and laughs that make up the sometimes not too subtle subtext of life in a small town. All shows will take place in the Studio Theater. Tickets: $8 General Admission, $5 with PLU ID. The first night of each performance is a preview, $2 for PLU students.

Our Town by Thornton WilderLori Lee Wallace, Director

Our Town reveals the ordinary lives of people in the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire. Defying most conventional theatrical genres, it is neither a comedy nor a tragedy, neither a romance nor a farce. Wilder’s fundamental message in Our Town is that people should appreciate exchanges of everyday life while they live them.


How I Learned to Drive by Paula VogelLori Lee Wallace, Director

How I Learned to Drive is a Pulitzer Prize winning drama set in rural Maryland, “before the malls took over.” The play recounts the relationship between a young girl, from a tightly knit lower-middle-class family, and her uncle-by-marriage. It is often described as one of the most disturbing love stories in theatre. Although the play’s subject matter is serious, Vogel includes several comedic devices, which illustrate the basic humanity that binds all of the characters in the play.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst, chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show’s Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

How I Learned to Drive

How I Learned to Drive urges us to examine our

own relationship with the term “empowerment” and

what it means to us as individuals. As the play shifts the balance between victimization and empowerment, it makes simple judgment impossible as no character is painted as a clear victim. The play is strong because it challenges our point of view.

Art and the Holocaust: Understanding Aesthetic Experience as EmpowermentMarch 14, Thursday, 3:40pm

What role can the experience of art play in our understanding of the Holocaust? We examine artworks as tools of empowerment, from the point of view of both the victim and the descendants of the perpetrators. We look first at paintings and objects made post-war to address the issue of German guilt, and end with a presentation by Music Department faculty of Olivier Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time.” This event is held in conjunction with the 2013 Holocaust Conference.

Our series explores the creative and artistic dimensions of the social process that fosters power in people for use in their own lives, communities and in their societies, by acting on issues they define as important. Bringing together our talented students and faculty to focus on a common theme, these events dynamically interpret empowerment through the panorama of the soac disciplines.

Lagerquist Concert HallUniversity Wind Ensemble, University Singersperformance of Susan Botti’s Cosmosis. Edwin Powell and Brian Galante, Directors

Cosmosis composer, Susan Botti, sets two texts by American poet May Swenson. The first movement uses the text of “Overboard,” and musically depicts the effects of gravity. In the second and third movements, the effects of gravity are released as Botti sets Swenson’s fictional musings on the first American space station, Skylab, and an experiment to test if a spider could spin a web in space. Though Skylab ultimately lost orbital integrity and came crashing to Earth, the lessons learned shaped future space missions. The quest for scientific discovery has empowered and shaped our society for our entire history. We discover valuable things through triumph in discovery and learning through failure.

Since the tragic events of September 11, anti-Muslim sentiment has become increasingly prevalent in America. This phenomenon, referred to by many as “Islamophobia,” has led to a significant fear of a largely misunderstood world religion. To counter negative stereotypes, the award-winning MediaLab team has set out to empower this largely marginalized group by opening a discussion.
