A. Reading a Popular Film for Adult
TITANIC
In 1996, treasure hunter Brock Lovett
and his team explore the wreck of RMS Titanic,
searching for a valuable diamond necklace called the
Heart of the Ocean. They recover Caledon "Cal"
Hockley's safe, believing the necklace to be inside, but
instead find a sketch of a nude woman wearing it,
dated April 14, 1912, the night the Titanic hit the
iceberg. Hearing about the drawing, an elderly woman
named Rose Dawson Calvert calls Lovett and claims
that she is the woman depicted in the drawing. She and
her granddaughter, Lizzy Calvert, visit him and his
team on his salvage ship. When asked if she knows the
whereabouts of the necklace, Rose recalls her time aboard the Titanic, revealing
that she is Rose DeWitt Bukater, a passenger believed to have died in the
sinking. She then begins her story as follows:
In 1912, 17-year-old first class passenger Rose boards "Titanic" in
Southampton with her fiancé Cal and her mother Ruth DeWitt Bukater. Ruth
stresses the importance of Rose's engagement, as the marriage would solve the
DeWitt Bukaters' secret financial problems. Distraught by her engagement,
Rose considers suicide by jumping off the ship's stern; a drifter and artist
named Jack Dawson stops her. Discovered with Jack on the stern, Rose tells Cal
that she was looking over the ship's edge in curiosity and that Jack saved her
from falling. Pressed, Jack confirms her account. Cal is at first aloof to Jack, but
when Rose indicates that recognition is due, he offers him a small amount of
money. After Rose mocks Cal for this, asking if saving her life means so little,
he invites Jack to a first-class dinner the following night. Jack and Rose develop
a tentative friendship, even though Cal and Ruth are wary of the young third-
class man. Following the dinner that night, Rose secretly joins Jack at a party in
the ship's third-class quarter.
English Book - Great Cinema Page | 8
Because Cal and Ruth forbid her to see Jack, Rose attempts to
rebuff Jack's continuing advances. She soon realizes, though, that she prefers
him over Cal, and meets him at the bow of the ship during what turns out to
be the Titanic's final moments of daylight. They then go to Rose's stateroom,
where she asks Jack to sketch her nude while wearing the Heart of the Ocean,
Cal's engagement present to her. Afterward, the two evade Cal's bodyguard
and make love inside a car in the ship's cargo hold. Going afterwards to the
ship's forward well deck, they witness the ship's collision with an iceberg and
overhear the ship's officers and designer outline its seriousness. Rose tells Jack
that they should warn her mother and Cal.
Cal discovers Jack's drawing and a mocking note from Rose in
his safe along with the necklace. Furious, he has his bodyguard slip the necklace
into Jack's coat pocket. Accused of stealing it, Jack is arrested, taken down to
the Master-at-arms's office and handcuffed to a pipe. Cal puts the necklace in
his coat. Rose runs away from Cal and her mother (who has boarded a lifeboat)
and releases Jack. The ship then starts to launch flares in order to attract any
nearby ships.
Once Jack and Rose reach the deck, Cal and Jack persuade her to
board another lifeboat, Cal claiming that he has arranged for himself and Jack
to get off safely. After she boards, Cal tells Jack that the arrangement is only
for himself. As Rose's boat lowers, she realizes that she cannot leave Jack, and
jumps back on board the Titanic to reunite with him. Infuriated, Cal takes a
pistol and chases them into the flooding first-class dining saloon. After
exhausting his ammunition, Cal realizes to his chagrin that he gave his coat
with the diamond to Rose. With the situation now dire, he returns to the boat
deck and boards a lifeboat by pretending to look after a lost child.
Jack and Rose return to the top deck. All lifeboats have departed
and passengers are falling to their deaths as the stern rises out of the water. The
ship breaks in half, and the stern side rises 90-degrees into the air. As it sinks,
Jack and Rose ride the stern into the ocean. Jack helps Rose onto a wall panel
only able to support one person's weight. Holding the panel's edge, he assures
her she will die an old woman, warm in her bed. Meanwhile, Fifth Officer
Harold Lowe has commandeered a lifeboat to search for survivors. Jack soon
dies of hypothermia and Rose draws the attention of Lowe's boat, and is
ultimately saved.
Rose and the other survivors are taken by the RMS Carpathia to
New York, where Rose gives her name as Rose Dawson. She hides from Cal on
English Book - Great Cinema Page | 9
Carpathia's deck as he searches for her. She learns later that he committed
suicide after losing his fortune in the Wall Street Crash of 1929.
Her story complete, Rose goes alone to the stern of Lovett's
ship. There she takes out the Heart of the Ocean, which has been in her
possession all along, and drops it into the ocean. While seemingly asleep in her
bed, the photos on her dresser are a visual chronicle that she lived a free life
inspired by Jack. The young Rose is then seen reuniting with Jack at the Grand
Staircase of the RMS Titanic, applauded and congratulated by those who
perished on the ship.

B. Reading a Popular Film for Children
Cinderella
Cinderella is the much-loved
only child of a widowed aristocrat. After
deciding that his beloved daughte needs a
mother's care, Cinderella's father marries Lady
Tremaine, a proud woman with two daughters
from her first marriage, Drizella and Anastasia.
Plain and socially awkward, these stepsisters are
bitterly envious of the beautiful and charming
Cinderella. After the death of Cinderella's
father, Lady Tremaine and her daughters take over the estate, and begin to
abuse and mistreat Cinderella out of jealousy, and even allow their cat, Lucifer,
to torment her. Despite being forced into servitude in her own home,
Cinderella becomes a kind woman and befriends the animals living in the barn
and many of the mice and birds who live in and around the chateau.
At the royal palace, the King is distressed that his son does not
intend to marry. Determined to see grandchildren, the King and the Duke
organize a ball for Prince Charming in an effort to enable his son to marry,
with every eligible maiden in the kingdom requested to attend. When the
invitation to the ball arrives, Cinderella asks her stepmother if she can attend,
since she too is an eligible maiden. Lady Tremaine agrees, provided Cinderella
finishes her chores and finds something suitable to wear. Her animal friends,
led by Jaq and Gus, fix a gown that belonged to Cinderella's mother, using
beads and a sash cast away by Drizella and Anastasia. When Cinderella wears her
dress just before departing, Lady Tremaine compliments Cinderella's gown,
English Book - Great Cinema Page | 11
subtly pointing out the beads and sash. Angered by the apparent theft of the
discarded items, the stepsisters destroy the gown, forcing Cinderella to remain
behind while her stepfamily leaves for the royal ball.
At the point of giving up her dreams, Cinderella's Fairy
Godmother appears and bestows upon Cinderella a silver blue dress with glass
slippers, and transforms a pumpkin and various animals into a carriage with
horses, a coachman and a footman. Cinderella departs for the ball after the
godmother warns her that the spell will break at the stroke of midnight,
meaning that her dress and everything else will change back to the way they
were. At the ball, the Prince rejects every girl (especially the stepsisters), until
he sees Cinderella. The two fall in love and dance alone throughout the castle
grounds until the clock starts to chime midnight. Cinderella flees to her coach
and away from the castle, inadvertently dropping one of her glass slippers.
After the Duke tells the King of the disaster, they plan to find Cinderella with
the slipper they recovered during her exit.
The next morning, the King proclaims that the Grand Duke will
visit every house in the kingdom to find the girl who fits the glass slipper, so
that she can be married to the Prince. When this news reaches Cinderella's
household, her stepmother and stepsisters prepare for the Grand Duke's arrival.
Cinderella, overhearing the news, begins dreamily humming the song from the
palace ball the previous night. Upon realizing that Cinderella is the girl who
danced with the Prince, Lady Tremaine locks Cinderella up to her attic
bedroom.
When the Grand Duke arrives, the mice steal the key to
Cinderella's room, but before they can deliver it they are ambushed by Lucifer.
The animals alert Bruno, Cinderella's bloodhound, who scares Lucifer out of
the house. As the Duke prepares to leave after the stepsisters unsuccessfully try
on the slipper, Cinderella appears and requests to try it on. Knowing that the
English Book - Great Cinema Page | 12
slipper will fit, Lady Tremaine trips the footman, causing him to drop the
slipper, which shatters into hundreds of pieces. The Duke laments over the
broken slipper, but Cinderella then produces the other glass slipper, much to
her stepmother's horror. Delighted at this indisputable proof of the maiden's
identity, the Duke slides the slipper onto her foot, which fits perfectly. Soon
after, Cinderella and the Prince celebrate their wedding, surrounded by confetti
tossed by the King, the Grand Duke and the mice.

C. Review a Film
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Richard Royce, Reviewer
Harry's back, and things are much the
same as usual. Harry is spending another dreadful
summer with his muggle Aunt and Uncle Dursley. For
those who have managed to avoid all of the Harry-
hoopla, a muggle is a person without magic, as
opposed to a wizard. Wizards are a race apart from
muggles, and they strive to keep themselves secret.
Harry is a wizard, and as such goes to a private school called Hogwarts.
Luckily, the family of his best friend Ron rescues Harry from his
prison. They whisk him off to the World Cup Quiddich tournament (a sort of
broom-borne soccer game to those muggle readers out there). Then, it's off to
school for another exciting term of learning about potions, magical creatures,
and foretelling the future. Except this year is different. The Triwizard
Tournament will be held for the first time in over 200 years, and the hosting
school is Hogwarts. A magical, flaming goblet will select a champion from each
of the three wizard schools in Europe. The champions will then face three
great challenges to battle for the coveted trophy. However, the goblet has a
mind of its own and adds a fourth champion: Harry.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the latest in a series of
books that have captured imaginations worldwide with good reason. Rowling
has created a loveable, likeable cast of characters with the requisite villains the
reader just loves to hate. Harry and his friends also find themselves in
predicaments many children face: Unpleasant adults who seem to wish them
English Book - Great Cinema Page | 14
nothing but trouble; mysterious actions of adults who do things without
explanation; and the sense of learning to use your own abilities to succeed in
life. "Take what you have and make something of yourself" is a strong theme
throughout all of the Harry Potter books.
It's not hard to see why kids enjoy these books. Children can
easily identify with the characters, and the plots capture their imagination. Yet,
though Rowling has managed to create a hero and friends who will endure, she
has not fallen into a trap many authors of children's books face: Harry is not
eternally young, but is growing and learning. He even is learning of the perils
and mysteries of socializing with girls when he needs an escort for the Yule Ball.
Wonder what else Rowling has in store for our plucky hero....

Snow White and the Huntsman
Snow White (Kristen Stewart) is the
princess of Tabor, daughter of King Magnus (Noah
Huntley) and Queen Eleanor (Liberty Ross). After his
wife's death, King Magnus marries the beautiful Ravenna
(Charlize Theron) after rescuing her from the Dark
Army, an invading force of glass soldiers. Ravenna who is
in fact a powerful sorceress and the Dark Army's master kills
Magnus on their wedding night after noting that men like him exploit the
beauty of women and discard them. As Ravenna seizes control of the
kingdom, Duke Hammond (Vincent Regan) escapes the Castle with his son
English Book - Great Cinema Page | 15
William, but is unable to save Snow White who is captured by Ravenna's
brother Finn (Sam Spruell). Snow White is then locked away in a tower of the
Castle.
Tabor is left in ruins under Ravenna's rule as she periodically
drains the youth from young women in order to maintain a spell once cast by
her mother which allows her to keep her beauty. When Snow White comes of
age, Ravenna learns from her Magic Mirror (Christopher Obi Ogugua) that
Snow White is destined to destroy her unless Ravenna consumes the young
girl's heart which will make her immortal. Ravenna orders Finn to bring her
Snow White but she escapes into the Dark Forest, where Ravenna has no power.
Eric the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), a drunken widower who has survived
the Dark Forest, is brought to Ravenna who orders him to lead Finn in pursuit
of Snow White. In exchange she promises to revive his deceased wife Sarah.
Duke Hammond learns that Snow White is alive and has fled into the Dark
Forest, and his son William (Sam Claflin), Snow White's childhood friend, later
infiltrates Finn's band as a bowman to find her.
The Huntsman locates Snow White in the Dark Forest but
Finn admits that Ravenna cannot resurrect the dead. The Huntsman then helps
Snow White to escape, promising to escort her to Duke Hammond's Castle in
exchange for a reward of gold. The two leave the Dark Forest and pass through
a fishing village where all the women have disfigured themselves in order to
escape Ravenna, and where he learns Snow White's true identity. He then leaves
her in the care of the women but returns when he sees the village being
attacked by Finn's men. Snow White and the Huntsman eventually come upon
a band of dwarves, formed by Muir (Bob Hoskins), Beith (Ian McShane), Gort
(Ray Winstone), Coll (Toby Jones), Duir (Eddie Marsan), Quert (Johnny
Harris), Nion (Nick Frost), and Gus (Brian Gleeson). Muir discovers Snow
White's identity as the only person who can defeat Ravenna and end her reign.
English Book - Great Cinema Page | 16
As they travel through a faerie sanctuary, the group is
attacked by Finn's men, resulting in Gus's death when he jumps in front of
Snow White to prevent an arrow from hitting her. The Huntsman kills Finn
after learning he abetted in the murder of his wife Sarah. William reveals
himself and helps defeat the soldiers before joining the others in their journey
to Hammond's castle.
Ravenna disguises herself as William and tempts Snow White
into eating a poisoned apple, but is forced to flee when the Huntsman and
William discover her. William kisses the now comatose Snow White without
seeing that a single tear has fallen. Her corpse is taken to Hammond's Castle.
As she lies in repose, the Huntsman professes his love and regret for not saving
Snow White who reminds him of his wife and kisses her, breaking the spell as
she awakens after a second tear falls. Snow White then takes command of the
Duke's army and leads them into battle against Ravenna.
The Dwarves infiltrate Tabor through the sewers and allow the
Duke's army to invade the Castle after opening the gates. Snow White
confronts Ravenna, but is overpowered. Ravenna is prepared to kill Snow White
and consume her heart when Snow White stabs her in the heart instead,
causing Ravenna to wither and die. Hammond's army is victorious. Snow
White is crowned Queen as the kingdom is restored.

Introduction
A paragraph is a group of related statements that a writer
develops about a subject. The first sentence states the specific point, or
idea, of the topic. The rest of sentences in the paragraph support that point
or idea. The sentences in a paragraph are related because each sentence adds
something about the same idea. Therefore, we can say that a paragraph is a
group of related sentences that develop one main idea or one main topic.
A paragraph is considered good only if the reader completely
understand the unit of information it contains and if the central idea is
completely developed. This central idea is usually stated in a topic
sentence. Every sentence in the paragraph must help developed the topic
sentence.
All paragraphs begin with an empty space known as
indentation. Indentation signals the start of a new paragraph, and each
paragraph has only one indentation.
There is no rule for how long a paragraph should be. The
length depends on the central idea that is developed. Some ideas take
longer to express than others because of the amount of supporting details.
A paragraph can be as short as one sentence or as long as ten sentences.
The length of a paragraph depends on the completeness of the idea or
topic discussed in the paragraph. Usually a paragraph has more than three
sentences in them and usually has between 100 and 200 words.
A paragraph is made up of three kinds of sentences that
develop the writer‟s main idea, opinion, or feeling about topic. These
sentences are (1) the topic sentence, (2) supporting sentences, and (3) the
concluding sentence.

2. There are numerous benefits of watching a movie at home. Most of my
reasons are personal, but I feel as though they are shared by many. I love
watching a movie at home because I can sprawl out on a couch. I think
movie theater chairs are so uncomfortable and confined. I also love eating,
so I can get up and go to the kitchen and go grab whatever I want for a
reasonable price, the price I paid at the grocery store. Plus, while you're
over in your kitchen getting food, you missed a part. Well you can go
rewind it and see the part you missed, or before you go to the kitchen,
you can pause the movie and when you come back, you can resume the
movie. I also enjoy the fact of if you rent a movie or own the movie, you
can watch it whenever you want. Personally, I believe there is nothing
better than spreading yourself out on a couch, with a loved one, and a nice
big bowl of popcorn, and watching a movie at night. It seems so relaxing.

B. Cohesion
It is important for a paragraph to have cohesion/unity. When a
paragraph has cohesion, all of the sentences in it discuss only one idea. And
every supporting sentence must directly explain or prove the main idea, which
is stated in the topic sentence. If there are sentences in the paragraph that are
not directly related to the main idea, the paragraph is said to have no unity.
Lexical Cohesion
Lexical cohesion can be achieved by the use of:
Repetition of words – a number of content words can be repeated
throughout the paragraph/ text.
Lexical set „chain‟ – the paragraph/ the text is cohesive because there are
lexical sets (that is words in the same topic area) which interrelated with
each other as the text/paragraph progresses.
Grammatical Cohesion
Grammatical cohesion is achieved in a number of different ways too:
Pronoun and possessive reference – more frequently pronoun or
possessive is used instead of a noun.
Article reference – article are also used for text cohesion.
Tense Agreement – writers used tense agreement to make cohesive.
Linkers – text also achieve cohesion through the use of linkers words
describing text relationship of „addition‟ (and, also, moreover,
furthermore), of „contrast‟ (however, on the other hand, yet, but) of
„result‟ (therefore, consequently, thus), of „time‟ (first, then, later, after
a while), etc.
English Book - Great Cinema Page | 25
Substitution and ellipsis – writers frequently substitute a short phrase
for a longer one that has preceded it, in much the same way as they use
pronoun reference. For example, in He shouldn‟t have cheated in the
exam but he did so because he was desperate to get into university the
phrase did so substitutes for cheated in his exam.

Exercise 1
Conversation about Describing a Film
Practice with your partner the following conversation between Simon and Rebecca about the film 'Saving Private Ryan'. Focus on and think about the meaning of the words/phrases in BOLD.
Rebecca : One of my favourite films is Saving Private Ryan. I know it's a
war film, but I love it.
Simon : It's a classic. It's got a brilliant cast, there are so many excellent
actors in it like Matt Damon, Vin Diesel etc... And of course,
there is Tom Hanks as the main character Captain Miller. It's one
of his best films.
Rebecca : Plus there are some very good cameo roles. The famous actor
Ted Dansen is in the film for about 3 minutes. It's a shame that
he wasn't in the film for longer. Also, do you know that
although the film is set in France during the D-Day invasion, it
was actually filmed in the south of England?
Simon : Yeah, I read it somewhere. I think it was one of the best films
directed by Steven Spielberg. I love the opening scene when they
are landing on the beach on D-Day. That scene has some of the
best twenty minutes of action in the whole history of cinema for
me. The special effects are excellent, with the explosions and the
people being blown up. It looks so real.
Rebecca : It's an excellent scene, I always remember the stunt of the men
on fire. But for me, I like the scene when the men are walking in
the countryside and talking about why they have to save Private
Ryan. The dialogue is excellent, I can imagine that I would say
that if I were in a similar situation.
Simon : The film has an excellent plot. How they have to go and save a
soldier whose 3 brothers have all died fighting and how they have
to go behind enemy lines to do it.

Rebecca : I think it's a real story, although they probably changed some
things. To be honest, I can't remember the film's score. Can you
remember the music in the film?
Simon : Not really. I think there was some music with trumpets at the
beginning in the graveyard. But apart from that, I only
remember the Edith Piaf song at the end. But that's not part of
the score. Did I tell you that when the film came out in 1998, I
was living in Madrid? So, the first time I saw it, it was dubbed into
Spanish. I didn't speak much Spanish then, so I didn't understand
a lot. It's a shame that it didn't have subtitles, so I could have
read the dialogue.
Rebecca : Dubbed films are strange. The voices are always very different to
the original voices of the actors. Oh, by the way, have you seen
the TV series Band of Brothers?
Simon : No I haven't.
Rebecca : Well, it's very similar to Saving Private Ryan. It's set during the
second world war and it follows a group of American soldiers. It
stars a lot of unknown young actors as the soldiers.
Simon : I'll have to watch the series.
