See ebparks.org/rules. R einhardt Redwood Regional Park is one of the most majestic parks in the East Bay Regional Park District. This 1,833-acre park, located just a few miles over the ridge from downtown Oakland, contains a stately redwood forest, the largest remaining natural grove of coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) in the East Bay. Miles of trails wind through peaceful third-generation redwood groves giving little evidence of the park’s logging past. In the mid-1800s an enormous old- growth redwood forest was leveled to supply building materials for the San Francisco Bay Area. Visitors can imagine the forest’s grandeur before aggressive logging at a heritage viewing deck in adjoining Roberts Regional Recreation Area. In 2019, the park was renamed in honor of Dr. Aurelia Henry Reinhardt, president of Mills College. Dr. Reinhardt was one of five prominent civic leaders elected to the Park District’s first Board of Directors in 1934 and was an influential spokesperson for the preservation of redwoods and public open space. In addition to the redwoods, the park also contains other evergreens, chaparral, and grasslands. Deer, squirrels, and raccoons are common wildlife found here. Those with a keen eye might spot a rare golden eagle or an Alameda striped racer from the trail. A unique strain of rainbow trout migrates seasonally up Redwood Creek. Besides hiking, biking, and nature study, park activities include picnic sites with meadows, and children’s play areas. Equestrian accommodations are found near the east entrances of the park. Historical Landmark No. 970 Interpretive panels and a historical landmark are located a short distance inside the Redwood Gate park entrance off Redwood Road highlighting a unique strain of native trout that seasonally migrate up Redwood Creek from Upper San Leandro Reservoir.
