SOCIAL DEVELOPERS LONDON APRIL 2013Facebook home
How will features impact developers or brands?
Cover Feed (as seen on previous slide)User centric vs. app centric
What does it really mean?
Photos center stage again (last month we saw the new newsfeed redesign) as seen on next slide. Note how big photos and videos will be. They take up almost the whole feed.
SOCIAL DEVELOPERS LONDON APRIL 2013Back to cover feed
TAKE AWAY: Develop content around people, but specifically around photos.
Open graph will probably become more important. Example “Angus cooked a recipe using MyRecipeApp”
FB confirmed: posts from 'liked' pages will be included in cover feed. Opportunity for brands.
No ads. Yet. Location based? Opportunity, but at the cost of bad UX?
SOCIAL DEVELOPERS LONDON APRIL 2013Chat Heads
Go from theater listings to google maps to car reservation to YOUR APP, all while keeping the chat with a friend at hand.
Might change the way you think about the content your app makes available?
No way to A / B test if people are using your app content for messaging due to privacy, so how can we test for that? Focus groups might be one answer.
SOCIAL DEVELOPERS LONDON APRIL 2013No iOS version: A challenge
Normally apps are quite similar between iOS and Android. Does app centric vs. user centric change this?
Same for Androids without Facebook Home
Begs the question: can we detect if the user has Facebook Home?
SOCIAL DEVELOPERS LONDON APRIL 2013Unified Messaging
Very cool feature. BUT is it just FB Messenger + SMS?
Strategic move for Facebook to 1UP the competition? Or will it be open with hooks for Whatsapp, Google+ and other messaging apps? Your App too?
More general: it shows once again how strategic mobile has become for FB. How many brands still ignoring mobile and at what missed opportunity?
SOCIAL DEVELOPERS LONDON APRIL 2013Other Facebook news
New 'reply' feature for pages as seen on the previous slide.
Page owners must enable it.
Still too early to tell if it will increase engagement. Gut instinct is that it will.
SOCIAL DEVELOPERS LONDON APRIL 2013Other Facebook news
'Friends of fans' stat is going away on Insights. Some pages already seeing no number there.
It was always an “exaggerated” large number that gave no indication of practical reach.
SOCIAL DEVELOPERS LONDON APRIL 2013

300 pending invites

Tip: Be aware of how it looks in the newsfeed. Arrows, just for example, don't translate well.
