How has legislation towards women changed?

have the same lessons, as oppose to different lessons for the different sex’s

How did women get equality?

• The suffragettes campaigned for women’s rights

They did this because they believed that women were not the inferior race, but were In fact equal to men

Emily Wilding Davison• Emily W. Davison felt so strongly about women having equal

rights, that she was willing to die for them to get equality- she jumped in front of a horse at a race to attract attention for the cause, and she died after a few days in an unconscious state

• She did this, knowing she may die- she felt she had to do it to bring the equal rights movement into the public eye

What inequalities still exist?• Girls generally do better in

GCSE exams than boys• In the Catholic Church- women

cannot conduct mass• On the grounds of maternity,

Women get maternity leave and their job is guaranteed for a certain amount of time

• Men feel that they cannot do certain jobs without being judged, e.g. a nurse or nursery teacher

• Men also feel they cannot express their emotions- this is thought to be why the suicide rate for men is higher than for women

• Religion and political parties tend to be male dominant

Definitions• Equality- The state of everyone having equal rights regardless of

race/class/colour/gender• Sexism- Discriminating against people because of their gender (being male

or female)• Prejudice- Pre- Judging someone/ judging someone before you know them• Discrimination- Putting your prejudices into action in a negative way

Examples• Equality- a woman being able to do a job that used to be a notoriously

male position

• Sexism- Treating one of the sex’s as the inferior/superior race • Prejudice- Making your mind up if you like say a male because of

the prejudice you have made based on their sex• Discrimination- acting on your prejudice and treating a certain sex

differently, or like the inferior or superior race

There are three types of Christian Churches to consider

• Catholic Church• Orthodox

What Church thinks what?

Modern protestant ChurchIn the modern protestant Church, women play all roles, such as

Laity roles, which are things like being in charge of children’s liturgies, giving communion, singing in the Choir and saying

readings.In the Modern protestant Church’s, they are completely the

opposite in their beliefs in the role of women, because not only do women perform laity roles, but also, they can even

conduct mass’, baptisms, funerals and weddings.The reasons for their beliefs of such equality between men and

women –like the orthodox protestants- are because of the bible. They believe the bible promotes equality between man

and woman, for example “there is no Jew nor Greek, Slave nor free, Male nor Female,

Circumcised nor un-circumcised; for we are all one in Christ Jesus”

- Galatians 3: 28And also in many other parts of the bible does it promote the

message of male and female equality.

Orthodox protestant ChurchThe Orthodox protestant Church believe that women

should play no role in the Church other than to be there. They believe that women should sit down and

learn in silence with their heads covered, and only the men can speak.

The reasons behind their somewhat sexist beliefs are inspired by –surprisingly- the Bible. If you are thinking why does the Bible promote sexism? This is wrong, but

should be interpreted to today’s World because in Jesus’ time it was a patriarchal society (meaning it was

ruled by men) The parts of the Bible where, what is interpreted to be

sexism, are particularly in St Paul’s letters, Timothy, and even in Genesis in the story of creation, where

women are made out to be the lesser person, because Adam was created first, and also Eve was supposed to

have bought temptation into our World.

The Catholic ChurchThe Catholic Church are all for women working in laity roles, to

help run the Church which once again, are roles in which you do things such as give communion, sing In the Choir, Perform a reading. And in this sense; The Catholic Church

promote equality between men and women, however, they can show some form of men being the better race, and this is because in the Catholic Church only men can give mass,

and the seven sacraments (Baptism, communion, confirmation, anointing of the sick, penance and

reconciliation, holy orders and matrimony).The reasons behind the believes of the Catholic Church are

also interpreted from the bible. They believe man and woman are equal because of parts of the bible such as

Galatians, but believe that only men should conduct the service itself because The priest is meant to represent

Jesus, and also because all of Jesus’ disciples were men, regardless of whether it was a patriarchal society.

Why different beliefs?

The reason that different Christians have different views on the equality of men and women is because they all

interpret the Bible in different ways, also in comparison to the debate that goes on of whether the story of creation is

literal or metaphorical truth, the debate on the roles of women still goes on.

Orthodox protestants believe that all women should just sit and learn in silence because this is what women were forced to do in the times of Jesus, and they suffered oppression from the men, maybe now it is not brutal

oppression, but in the orthodox protestant church, it still goes on.

Modern protestants believe that men and women are totally equal because as it claims in the bible, “we are all equal in

the eyes of God”.Catholics believe that women are mostly equal but only men

can conduct the service and sacraments because the priest represents Jesus.

What does the Bible say?

• “There is no Jew nor Greek, Slave nor free, Male nor female; for we are all one in Christ Lord”

• When Jesus resurrected, he first showed himself to not man, but woman.

• At the time of Jesus’ death, it was women who surrounded him.

For total equality for men and women

That God gave his only begotten son to the World to preach the word, so women should not say mass.

Mary was the person who bought Jesus into the World, and Jesus had a closer relationship with his mother than Joseph.

Jesus’ attitude to women was revolutionary; and he didn’t care what others thought of him for it

What is racism?

• Racism is treating people as the inferior race, based on their race/colour

• He was a Baptist minister• He believed that what the black people were suffering was

wrong• He was a pacifist

• He used non-violent resistance to enforce the civil rights movement

• He was the youngest ever person to win the Nobel peace prize

• He used the Bible to show equality• He had a dream of racial harmony

• He was assassinated, the person charged for this was James Earl Ray, Kings son tried to get Ray out of prison though

because he truly believed he didn’t do it

This quote says God accepts men from every nation into his kingdom,

So why shouldn’t we accept all men? We were all made in Gods image.

What is a Multi-Ethnic Society?

A multi-ethnic society is a society where people from different

races/ethnic backgrounds live

There are thought to be advantages and disadvantages of living in a

multi-ethnic society See next Slide

Advantages• Experiencing other

cultures

• A more differed lifestyle

• Promotes Unity rather than segregation

• Prejudice is eliminated as you get to know other races, therefore stopping discrimination

Disadvantages

•It is easier to ignore equality, and focus on your own needs

•People sometimes find it difficult to accept something different from themselves

•People who are racist (although wrong) may feel that their opinions are being taken away from them

Britain as a multi-ethnic society

Is Britain a Multi-Ethnic Society?

Britain is a multi-ethnic society, this is because there are people living here from different parts of the World, from

different ethnic backgrounds.

EVIDENCEIn the times where the first ever people to come to Britain came, they were never ‘British’ for example, the Romans as

early as 1ADPeople always came to Britain from other parts of the WorldBritain set up an overseas empire- and allowed anyone who

lived in a British Colony, to come and live in BritainAfter WW2 many workers were brought to Britain to make up

for the loss of men, they were allowed to then treat Britain as their home.

• A multi-faith society is a society where people with different religious beliefs live, there are people with different faiths

Advantages of living in a Multi-Faith society

• Seeing faith through another persons eyes• It could lead you to understand more

about your own faith through experiencing another persons faith

• You can say you have considered more than one religious belief- reinforcing faith in your own religion

• You can share your religion with other people, possibly even resulting in a conversion experience

Disadvantages

• It is easier to ignore other religions and only believe that yours is correct

• It is easier for the government to lead a society who all follow one faith as oppose to constant debating

An inclusive Christian would say that they believe that Christianity holds

heaven by following another religion or being an atheist, and that you

A pluralist would say that no religion can claim to hold the real truth about

God, and that all religions have an equal right to coexist. They believe you can get to God by following any

religious belief
