A new Cultural Education Partnership for Barnet. artsdepot began building the partnership in the Autumn of 2018 securing funding from John Lyon’s Charity and A New Direction enabling a 3 year activity programme. The CEP aims to provide a rich cultural education for every child and young person in Barnet with a focus on those with special educational needs, young people removed from mainstream school, faith schools and home schooled children.

CEP fouding partners include: Barnet Education Arts Trust, Barnet Partnership 4 School Sports (Dance Festival), Middlesex University, Barnet Schools Improvement Service, Barnet Libraries, RAF Museum, London Studio Centre, Unitas Youth Zone, Barnet CAMHS Service, Young Barnet Foundation, Pavilion Study Centre, Compton Secondary, Mapledown SEN and Hyde Primary School.

Space Invaders Schools Programme was a collaborative project between artsdepot, art and design practice NEON, and five Barnet Schools (2 primary, 2 secondary, 1 SEN).

The project gave students the opportunity to critique their school environments enabling them to co-design a physical intervention supported through a 1k investment in each school.

An exhibition profiling the project ran in our Apthorp Gallery December 2019. The project was supported by The Over Arup Foundation and The Buro Happold Foundation.

9young people with disabilities took part in our pilot Work Experience programme. We will repeat the project in 2020 with the addition of work placements with partner organisations.

Our Girl’s Empowerment Project engaged a group of 8 girls excluded from mainstream school in personal development through spoken word, music and inspirational role models.

For our young people with severe to moderate learning difficulties it is such a great experience to be able to get out of school and socialise and learn with others. The opportunity that artsdepot offered our young people is invaluable. They have grown in not only knowledge but in self-confidence and self-esteem.

- Suzi Ainsworth, Teacher at Mapledown School

12 pupils of Mapledown SEN school were taken on a trip to an aquarium and environmental education centre inspiring music and art workshops that created an exhibition in our Foyer, Summer 2019.

We were host to the National Theatre Connections Festival, Barnet Schools Music and Dance Festivals, and Shakespeare Schools Festival.

43 young people, referred by partners supporting those NEET / at risk of homelessness took part in our Creative Industries Insight programme. The young people are extremely vulnerable, with a variety of complex personal circumstances including poor mental health, substance misuse, low self-esteem and complicated family or housing situations. We work to develop ambition, self-confidence and commitment and introduce the young people to a broad range of creative experiences and performances. We aim to provide a motivational experience that can inspire young people to commit to better time keeping and personal development goals. 2 of these young people have attained Bronze Arts Awards – a Level 1 qualification.

Who Cares? Working with Lung theatre and The Lowry in Salford we engaged

schools and young people, including those supported by Barnet Young Carers, exploring stories similar to their own.

Over 600 attendees came to our Big Draw Festival

12 residencies where artists developed ideas for shows exploring (for example): how children understand and deal with bereavement, intersectional feminism through the prism of queer skateboard crews, stories for children and young people using classical Indian and Bollywood dance and Rajasthani puppetry.

artsdepot OPEN is our annual art competition where anyone can apply to appear in a curated summer exhibition. This year we had over 300 artworks submitted for consideration with around 1/3rd appearing in the exhibition and the winner received a £3,000 cash prize.

Jack and I are making a family show! It’s about death and dying, and how we, as children, confront and make sense of the fact that everyone dies, and how we, now as adults, think about the stories we might tell children about dying. If that sounds heavy and dark, that’s exactly what the show won’t be. It’ll be playful and clever.

- Ben Kulvichit and Jack Bradfield on their March 2019 residency.

It’s so important that there is somewhere locally that can offer high quality shows for our residents. If artsdepot stopped doing Matinee Lunch Club there would be an outcry from local care homes

I would recommend MINE to gaming parents and children all over the world... Overall I think it was amazing and it made me feel excited.
