ACKNOWLEDGEMETMSOCIALINTERNSHIP TIME PERIOD- 1/06/2015 TO 15/07/2015

MHU (Mobile Health Care Unity) MHU is the Mobile Health Care Unity sponsored by Jindal Stainless Limited (Jajpur). MHU covers 13 villages in a week. People feel very happy as they are getting the medicines for free which they cannot afford. One awareness camp is conducted every month by the MHU for general awareness about the sanitation and other diseases. Last month i.e. in May the awareness camp was on “Sunstroke”. Sunstroke is an illness because of the environmental heat.

Problem faced by the Staff:-

The staff is really doing a great job by distributing medicine to the needy persons, which cannot be possible without Jindal Stainless Limited as they are sponsoring this. But some time people misbehave with the staff by don’t listening to them and arguing with them. Another problem is some people come to take medicine every time even if they are not ill. I noticed an old lady who use to come every time whenever we go to their village. And by doing this there is the wastage of medicines and money. On the other hand there are some good

Page 5: Social Internship final report. (1)

people also who behave in a good manner and always wait until the doctor is free from other patient.

Distributing Happiness:-

In Kaitha village a girl named Pratibha who is suffered from thyroid. Thyroid is a large ductless gland in the neck which continuously grow by the time. Her family condition is very poor because her father is a regular drunker and he never gave a single penny for her treatment. The whole expenses for her treatment is given by the JSL and still taking all her medicines expenses. People are very happy by this medical services by the company. I talked some people and they appreciate this and they also said if the medical service was not there then many of us don’t have that much money to go to the city and take medicine.

Common Diseases Found:-

Cold Arthritis Neuritis Loosen torn

Page 6: Social Internship final report. (1)

Dermatitis Injury Fever Gastric

Conclusion:-

After my research on the MHU, I think there are some things to improve. First of all there should be some type of control on the people who take medicines without any reason as this is the wastage of medicines and the money both. For this the doctor should personally check the patient and then give the medicine not only by listening to them. Another thing to improve is the timing for every village. I think the time for a single village should be increase and should be fixed. What our doctors are doing, they leave the place whenever they feel that there are no more patients. There may be a possibility that someone who is ill and need some time to reach to the ambulance. So there must be a fix time to leave the place.

On the other hand there are some good points also like the whole staff is very well behaved. They always talk nicely to the people ignoring their behavior. They help each other in every possible way. The paper work is very good, they record every patients name with the medicine they take. I think the CSR department is doing a great job and should continue this practice in future also.

Disposal of garbage:-

Some people throw the daily garbage inside their home itself. This practice of throwing garbage inside home can cause disease

in their family and can be very harmful for their health. They should at least throw the garbage in the nearly common

garbage pit.

Blocked Drains:-

Some drains are blocked by the solid garbage and it causes the water stand at one place.

If water stays at one place openly then the mosquitos will come and spread diseases.

Blocked drainage also affects the water supply by pipelines. Some pipelines have holes in it and if the drains are blocked then

the blocked dirty water go inside the pipeline and mix up with the drinking water, which can causes deadly diseases.

Wastage of Water:-

Page 20: Social Internship final report. (1)

There are many families who are wasting the water like it will never finish.

This practice of wasting water may one day make them sit without water.

People start the water tap and move away for some time then later come and first they pick up the vessel and then close the tap.

Wastage of water by running tap.

*** Case Studies***

Page 21: Social Internship final report. (1)

I went to every person’s place and talked to them.

I have collected data about them and their family. I have made many case studies of many peoples. Some of those case studies are given below.

Whole family use soap to wash hands after defecation. The drinking water is taken from water pipelines. Also the whole family washes their hands with soap before having food. The family put the drinking water in mud vessels on the floor. The best thing is they boil the water before drinking it simply. They throw the daily garbage in the garbage pit near by the house. Finally they said that there is no need of PeePoo bags in our family as they are having their own toilet and never used to go out for defecation. There are no diseases by the sanitation problem and the only problem is Mosquitos which come because of dirty surroundings.

The toilet is under manufacturing and by end of this month it will complete. They use soap for washing hands before having food. They take drinking water from pipelines and put the water in steel vessels like bucket and pot. According to them the water pipeline is having some holes in it and by this they have diseases like jaundice and malaria etc. So for pure water they boil the water and then drink it. They throw their daily garbage in the park inside their home only. Animals waste is also thrown at the same park for fertilizers. After all this they are not willing to give a try to PeePoo bags.

Page 24: Social Internship final report. (1)

They wash their hands by mud after defecation and with soap before eating.

Babli was a worker in JSL plant and unluckily he got fracture in his leg and then after he is not able to work. His both sons are also unemployed and they are not getting work anywhere. So the family condition of the family is very poor. Babli said that “ JSL has done nothing for him or his family after he got fracture and he is unemployed from last 2 years”.

NAME- MUKUND NAIK

Age- 30 years

Education- illiterate

Occupation- Unemployed

There are 4 members in his family. All family members use to go out for defecation and they have to take their children also with them for open defecation rather than inside home toilet because of money problem. They are not financial strong to build a toilet for their family. Initially he was an employee in JSL and the company asked him to leave the company because of some reason. Then after he is unemployed and it’s very difficult for him to fulfill his family needs. They fill the drinking water from the water pipelines and use it for food and drinking without boiling it. Mukund throw all the daily garbage in the field very near by his house and he himself increasing the mosquitos as he was complaining about them. His family also faced problem of dyria and malaria because of unhygienic surroundings. Mukund throw his animal’s defecation at the same place where he uses to throw the garbage which is very near by his home.

They keep the drinking water in steel and plastic buckets. The store water for the future use has been kept in a handmade container openly without covering it. They throw the daily garbage just outside their own house not even at the place where all other throw their garbage. The main problem I have seen is their children are running around on the garbage area without wearing sleepers in their feet which may cause any dangerous disease. Again they are also complaining about the mosquitos, but I tried to tell them that if they will stop throwing garbage around here and there then the mosquitos’ problem will itself decrease.

Page 34: Social Internship final report. (1)

PeePoople bags:-

The other objective of this report is to know if people are willing to give a try to PeePoo bags.

But not even a single person or family is willing to give a try, because approximately all the families have toilets in their houses.

And the people who don’t have toilet they are also not ready to give a try as they have to spend some money on it.

Need for dustbins:-

When I asked people why they throw the garbage openly, then all people said that there are no dustbins anywhere.

So I recommend to put at least one dustbin between two houses. If we fix the dustbins in villages and assigned some workers to go

and pick the garbage from the dustbins on the daily basis, then there will be more cleanliness all around.

Conclusion:-

Page 35: Social Internship final report. (1)

The people are now much more sensitive about the defecation practice and more than 85% people are defecating inside their home toilet.

People also drink water after boiling it and they keep the drinking water vessel covered.

The other main challenge is the water quality and maintenance of water points.

People are falling ill by drinking the water from current pipeline because there are holes in it and the drain’s dirty water sometime mix with drinking water

Drains exist but they are chocked due to solid wastes.

Safe disposal of wastewater was not observed because the pits which soak wastewater do not exist.

About 85% of solid wastes are disposed off openly in the environment.

Water pipelines are the main sources of drinking water. There are some families who fill water from other sources like hand pumps.

Mostly people are happy with the drinking water supply but not all.

Many people are still going out for defecation and some said they don’t want to spend money on toilet and some people have half built toilets in their homes.
