At the present moment, over 17 million Canadians are using social media

In 2011 35% of online Canadians visited a Social Networking site everyday; a number that was only 19% a year ago. While 15% of Canadians stated that they use Social Media less than they did a year ago, 35% say that the time spent has increased.

18-34 year old demographic is by far the heaviest users of Social Media in Canada, with 86% of that age range active on Social Networks.

Older age ranges have significantly increased their Social Networking activity in recent years. Almost 2/3 of 35-54 year olds and over 40% of those over the age of 55 in Canada are now actively using Social Media. This isn’t to say that Social Media in Canada is getting “older”, but it is expanding its reach among the entire population.

37% of online Canadian women say that they visit a Social Media site at least once a day, compared to only 24% of online Canadian men.

Interesting stats about Facebook :

Facebook has a daily audience greater than 2 Super Bowls and 6X that of Hockey Night in Canada.

According to Facebook UK, the recent Royal Wedding had only 6.8 million people log-in and talk about the event during a 24 hour span, compared to Canada’s 9+ Million each day.

According to a post by Mashable, 116,010,760 American’s are on Facebook. With an estimated US population of 309,003,000, this works out to approximately 38% of Americans having a Facebook profile compared to  50% of Canadians!

Interesting stats about Twitter :

There are 75 million users on Twitter

4.36% of Twitter users are from Canada

The population of Canada is 34,074,000

9.59% of Canadians have a Twitter account – 3 270 000 Canadians

1.9% more than 10 tweets – 654 000 Canadians

Sure, 654 000 Canadians sounds like small peanuts, especially when you consider not all accounts are personal accounts. But when you consider that Twitter accounts are integrated to Facebook and other social media platforms and that tweets spread via word of mouth as well, the power of Twitter cannot be discounted. Especially when you consider the power of the group wielding the accounts.

While the fastest growing age group by total users is still 26-34, the number of women over 55 on Facebook grew by an astounding 175.3% since the end of September.  Their male counterparts, however, weren’t able to keep up – growing by only 137.8%.  The number of women over 55 on Facebook almost double the number of men over 55 on Facebook today.
