Description:
The slides for a presentation I had to give to the other phd students in my department. The audience consists of media and comms phd students and academics - with more focus on traditional media channels. Briefly introduced social media - from a tools perspective and a social space prespective. Used bloggers to clarify terms, focussing on the recentness of the work and how much discussion there is about such terms and buzzwords. Progress to moving away from solid definitons and instead encourage them to try the tools, invite them to see twitter stream and to think of ways to use them in their day to day activities. Finally finished up on the event I am running at the University of Leicester of the 26th of June, 2009 (http://usesandabuses.wordpress.com) - invite to attend and participate, offer the chance to try out the tools and observe the environment in the company of other first timers

What is Social Media?

• Wikipedia DefinitionSocial media is information content created by people using highly

accessible and scalable publishing technologies. At its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. It's a fusion of sociology and technology, transforming monologue (one to many) into dialog (many to many) and is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers.

Stop discussing it, USE IT!

• Don't analysis it, just try it. And keep trying it.• Socially focussed websites are not a new

thing, they should be used in addition to other tools.

• The Internet is not an object, it is a social space
