2. Definition

  • Social networking focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities. Most social network services are Web-based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as e-mail and instant messaging services.

3. Some Terminology

  • Web 2.0
    • A second generation of Web development and design that aims to facilitate communication, secure information sharing, interoperability and collaboration on the Internet. Includes Web-based communities such as social networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, and blogs.
  • Wiki
    • A collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone with access to contribute or modify content. Wikipedia is one of the best-known wikis.

4. Some Terminology

  • Digg
  • A social news Web site made for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the Internet, by submitting links and stories, and voting and commenting on submitted links and stories.
  • RSS (Really Simple Syndication)
    • Web-feed formats used to publish frequently updated workssuch as blogs, news headlines, audio, and video.
  • Instant Messaging
  • Any system that allows instantaneous person-to-person conversations over a network. Began in 1960s as early Unix chat systems.

5. Why???

  • Corporate leaders should use Web 2.0 tools not only to communicate but also to learn from employees, suppliers, customers and the public. Many corporations spend large sums trying to find out what people think of them. Plugging into the blogosphere or listening to feedback on Twitter offers a more effective and cost-efficient way of learning how to approach customer relations.

  • Social networking websites, Twitter and online business reviews by consumers are joining search engines as common marketing tools on the Internet. And in a weak economy, businesses are looking more to cheap, interactive online venues and email to promote their businesses, provide customer service and grow brand loyalty.

  • 61% of people with online profiles have AHI of more than $50,000
  • 33% of people with online profiles are college graduates
