• Early social networking sites include Classmates.com (1995) and SixDegrees.com (1997). SixDegrees, despite having features that would become extremely popular in later years, was too ahead of its time and consequently shut down.

• Friendster launches in 2002 and acts as a sort of guinea pig for a growing community of online social networkers.

• 2003 onwards: growing number of sites that host user-generated content such as blogs and videos, expanding the online social community.

Opinions• Social networking sites are useful when it comes to expanding your social network or meeting different kinds of people on the internet• They offer a place where people with common interests can get together and share ideas or ask questions• Good way to communicate with friends or family who live far away and be updated with what’s going on in their lives• It is a good way to get in touch with classmates or friends from the past who you’ve lost contact with• Can be a good place to get help or learn things from other people (forums, message boards)
