New Jersey Divides

Soon after New Jersey became a colony, problems arose over boundaries.

A boundary is a line that divides one area of land from another.

Some people argued over where land began and ended.

Others argued over larger boundaries including the boundary between New York and New Jersey.

Page 7: Social Studies Unit 2

Proprietors

How did the problems begin? The Duke of York split the land

between Lord John Berkley and George Carteret. (new land owners)

Berkley sold his share to Quakers in 1674

1676- Carteret and the Quakers decided to split up and divide the colony.

ProprietorsQuakers- West

Jersey (own government)

Carteret- East Jersey (own government)

The boundary between the two was poorly drawn. Because of this colonists argued over the boundary.
