What is Social Networking? social network

• “An association of people drawn together by family, work or hobby. The term was first coined by professor J. A. Barnes in the 1950s, who defined the size of a social network as a group of about 100 to 150 people. On the Web, social networking sites have millions of members”.

social networking site• “A Web site that provides a virtual community for people interested in a

particular subject or just to "hang out" together. Members create their own online "profile" with biographical data, pictures, likes, dislikes and any other information they choose to post. They communicate with each other by voice, chat, instant message, videoconference and blogs, and the service typically provides a way for members to contact friends of other members.

Sites may also serve as a vehicle for meeting in person. The "social networking site" is the 21st century "virtual community," a group of people who use the Internet to communicate with each other about anything and everything. One can find dating sites, friendship sites, sites with a business purpose and hybrids that offer a combination of these. Globally, hundreds of millions of people have joined one or more social networking sites”.www.Techweb.com- 6/2/09

How to protect your privacy

Social networking tools are useful only as long as you can manage the noise and keep these services from intruding on your work and privacy. Follow these guidelines to make sure the networking remains productive:

--Set your profile to "private." ---Put an end to friends who post embarrassing pictures and blog about weekend

activities. --Tell your friends not to put "tags" on their photos or blogs. --Monitor openly accessible social networks you're involved in. --Contact the Web site itself if something is beyond your control. --Consider an avatar instead of a photo. --Use pseudonym's for family and especially children. --Don’t post pictures of other people with out permission, ask the same from them. --Don’t post pictures of your children. --Think about the information you post does it give away your location, identity,

workplace, history or other personal information? --Is the information you are posting something you would be ok with your mother or

grandmother viewing? What if it were on the front page?

How to Network It helps to choose the right onlineplatform for the user’s specific needs:Services like Twitter allow connectionswith people all over the globe. The benefit of Twitter is that followingsomeone does not have to be reciprocal, and there is very little information for others to see. LinkedIn isa lot stricter with how connections aremade and therefore offers a morecontrolled professional networkingplatform. A user’s profile also acts as anonline resume/executive bio if filled outwell and it is very useful, particularly fornetworking with potential employers.Blogs allow a user to write about aparticular field of interest, show theirskills and promote themselves online.Blogs are more time and effort than many online profiles, and users shouldKeep these up-to-date and relevant.

The best thing about social networking to create an online presence is the ability toself-market. Have a new blog post? The user can advertise the fact on Twitter, and create a Facebook group for theblog and keep members updated. LinkedIn Group Discussions can also beused to generate feedback and get eople interested. A “Follow Me onTwitter” widget can also be added to theblog. And users shouldn’t be afraid tocontact connections for information or advice in person people are surprisinglywilling to share information even if they are only a “virtual” friend.

Tips for maintaining your online presence

How to Avoid Common Pitfalls• Social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace

commonly have privacy settings. The user should ensure that profiles, photographs and wall postings are set to be seen only by accepted friends. The user should bear in mind that when someone searches on Facebook, for example, the user’s profile (including profile picture) is still public and many networking sites actually own the material posted on them, so discretion must be used as this material can be sold or shared elsewhere.

Users should also:• Choose a profile picture carefully that presents them in a

positive, professional way• Moderate comments and pictures posted by friends• Avoid any inflammatory remarks on blogs, social

networking sites, and even emails (particularly about a current or previous employer)

• It is important to remember that networks stretch far and wide. Users may not be aware of who knows who in their network and negative comments could easily get back to that person and end up ruining the user’s reputation instead!

How to Create a Powerful Online Presence• When setting up a profile or blog, users

should think about what uses the profile/blog will have – is it for job hunting? Connecting with old friends? Professional networking?

• Users must structure each profile carefully and provide useful information that reflects their abilities and interests in a positive light.

• Users should begin by Googling themselves. It is often surprising what information shows up. If anything negative appears that shouldn’t be online, a clean up of what is already there must be done. Zero online presence is better than a negative one, but that means the rewards of a positive online presence are still there to be reaped.

• Once old profiles have been cleaned up and new ones carefully created, users should Google themselves again and see the difference
