WELCOME!Thank you for your interest in membership in the General Society of MayflowerDescendants (GSMD) and the Florida affiliate, the Florida Society of MayflowerDescendants (FSMD). Founded in 1897, The Mayflower Society, or GSMD, is a501(c)(3)non-profitorganizationcommittedtoeducationandlineageresearchonthe journeyof thePilgrimsaboard theMayflowerin1620and their linealdescent.The Society provides education and understanding of why the Pilgrims wereimportant, how they shaped western civilization, and what their 1620 voyagemeans today. Applications for membership in GSMD and FSMD are based onproving your ancestral lineage for each generation back to your MayflowerPassenger(s).Thiscanbechallengingattimes,buttheColonyHistorianinyourlocalareawillassistyouwithcompletingyourapplication.

IntroductoryNote:ThisdocumentprovidesguidanceandinstructionsfortheFloridaMayflowerSocietyapplicationprocess.Theapplicantwillberequiredtoprovidesufficientprimaryand/orsecondarysourcesfortheirlineageforeachpriorgeneration.ThefirstfivegenerationsarewelldocumentedintheSociety’s‘SilverBooks’nowavailableformanyoftheMayflowerpassengers.Amostimportantfirststepisfortheapplicanttoobtaincopiesofbirthcertificates(B/C),marriagecertificates(M/C)anddeathcertificates(D/C)(asappropriate)fortheapplicant’sgeneration(includingspouse),andtheapplicant’sparentsandgrandparent’sgenerations.Completionoftheapplicationisbasedoninformationprovidedbyyou.

THEAPPLICATIONPROCESS:Itisassumedthatyouhavedonesomedegreeofpreliminarygenealogicalresearchand have found a connection within your family tree that goes back to a knownMayflower Passenger. Gathering and providing the documentation necessary toprove each generation’s connection will be the key to completing a successfulapplication. There are threemethods of starting the application process and youhavetheoptiontobeginwithanyorallofthefollowing:

1.FAMILYMEMBERALREADYINTHESOCIETY:UsearecentlyapprovedGSMDapplication from an immediate family member for the same MayflowerPassenger you are proposing for membership. Immediate family means,parents,childrenorfirstcousinfromthelinecarrier.Pleaseobtainacopyoftheirapprovedapplicationandsendittous.Recentlymeanswithinthelasttenyears.However,withrespecttousingapprovedMayflowerapplicationsfrom family members, we must include this disclaimer: As a standarddisclaimer,wemustcallyourattentiontothefactthateventhoughalineagewas approved in the past, it may not be approved today without additionalsource documentation. Even though a papermay list references, some of thesourcescitedmaynotbepresentinthefile.Standardstodayrequirethatsuchsourcesbeprovided.Manyolderapplicationshavenodocumentswiththemat

all.Often,manyofthedocumentscitedwereneveractuallysubmittedbecausetherewerenocopymachinesavailableatthetimeoftheoriginalapplication.Itmaybenecessary toupdate evenmore recentlyapproved lineages, providingdocuments for events that have occurred since the lineage was originallysubmittedortomakeupformissingorweakdocumentation. Incaseswhereaprospective member wishes to use a family member’s application, theyshouldcontacttheStateHistorianfordirection.TheStateHistorianwillputtheprospectivememberincontactwiththeappropriateColonyHistoriantodeterminehowbesttoinitiatetheapplicationprocess.Oncetheprospectivememberisreadytostarttheapplication,theapplicationfeeof$40.00mustbepaidasnotedbelow.

2. SEEKASSISTANCEFROMPLYMOUTHFORBESTFITLINEAGETHATMAYBE

ONRECORD:ContacttheGeneralSocietyofMayflowerDescendantsandfillout their on-line lineage form here:https://www.themayflowersociety.org/join/preliminary-review-form. TheGSMDlineagereportwillconfirmthatyourproposedlinecanbepursuedformembership and determine if there already is an approved line to apassengerwith some or all of your generations. The lineage report can beusedtocompletesomeofthedocumentationneeded.Thisisrecommended,but can be considered an optional approach since there is a $35 fee inPlymouthforthisservice.IfPlymouthcompletesalinereviewthatisvalid,acopy of their report will be sent to the Florida State Historian who willcontacttheprospectivememberandappropriatelocalColonyHistorian. Atsuchtimethattheprospectivememberwishestostarttheformalapplicationprocess,a$40.00applicationfee,asnotedbelow,mustbepaid.

3.APPROACHYOURLOCALCOLONY:TheapplicantcontactstheirlocalColony

Historian or Colony Governor expressing an interest in membership. TheColonyHistorianwillinitiatetheprocesswiththeprospectivemember.TheColony Historian or an appointed Co-Historian will serve as your primarypointofcontactthroughyourapplicationprocess.

Thereisatwo-pagelineagesheetthatcanbefilledoutbytheapplicant.ThelocalColonyHistoriancanquicklycheckthefirstfivetosixgenerationsofaproposed Mayflower line using the Colony’s library. If that checks out,followingpaymentoftheStateapplicationfeeasnotedbelow,thenextstepwillbe foraCo-Historian tocontactGSMDatPlymouth toseekacopyofarecentlyapprovedMayflowerapplication thatcoversalloraportionof theproposedMayflower line. If such an approved application exists, this cansaveconsiderableapplicationtime.However,inmanycasesnopriorlinehasbeenproven leaving the taskaftergeneration6 to theapplicant toprovidesufficient references to prove the lineage with the guidance of the ColonyHistorianoroneoftheColonyAssistantHistorians.

Regardless of which path is chosen, once a lineage has been preliminarilydetermined to be valid, the full application processmay begin. At that point, theprospectivememberpaysanon-refundable$40.00applicationfeetotheSocietyofMayflower Descendants in the State of Florida (FSMD). This check, payable toFSMDshouldbesenttotheColonyHistorian. Theapplicationfee isvalidforone-yearandmustbere-paidiftheapplicationisnotcompletedbythattime.Oncethefeeispaid,theMayflowermembershipprocessinFloridastartsatthelocalcolonylevelwiththeapplicantworkingwiththeColonyHistoriantoprepareanapplicationthatprovesaMayflowerline.ImportantNotes:

• TheapplicationprocessisacollaborativeeffortbetweentheapplicantandtheColonyHistorian.

• TheworkoftheColonyHistorianisasavolunteer..

• GenealogicalresearchbytheColonyHistoriansisnotroutinelyprovidedtoapplicants.However,astimeallows,wedoassistapplicantsfindresourcesandrecordsthatmaybeavailableon-lineoratthelocallibrary’sgenealogysection.

• Ultimately,itistheresponsibilityoftheapplicanttofindandprovideallvitalrecordsrelatedtothelastthreegenerations,asoutlinedbelow.Anyvitalrecordsavailableforearliergenerationsshouldalsobeprovidedbytheapplicant.

• ThegoalofcollaborationbetweentheColonyHistorianandtheapplicantistopresentaclearconnectionbetweentheapplicantandtheirMayflowerpassengerbyprovidingprimaryandsecondarydocumentsthatsufficientlyshowhowonegenerationlinkstothepreviousone.

1. Yourlongformgovernmentbirthcertificateshowingbirthdate,placeofbirth,andyourparents’names.Hospitalbirthcertificatescannotbeused.

2. Your spouse(s) long formgovernment birth certificate(s) showingparents,birthdateandplaceofbirth -provide forallspouses ifyouhavemultiplemarriages.Hospitalbirthcertificatescannotbeused.

3. Your civilmarriage certificate-showingbride, groom,date andplace(provide for all marriages). These records often include names ofbride’sandgroom’sparents.Churchmarriagecertificatesmaynotbeused.

4. Marriagedissolutiondocument, asappropriate, foranymarriages ineventofdivorce.

5. Death certificates, as appropriate, (long-form government issued) ofspouse(s) showing date/place of death and possibly parents ofspouse(s).

For your Parents' Generation (provide two clear copies of all vital recordsdocuments-notoriginals)

1. Yourmother's long formgovernmentalbirth certificate showingherbirth date, place of birth, and parents.NOTE: Hospital birthcertificatescannotbeused.

2. Your father's long form governmental birth certificate showing hisbirth date, place of birth, and parents. NOTE: Hospital birthcertificatescannotbeused.

7. Death certificates (long-form government issued)of any otherspouse(s)ofparentsshowingdate/placeofdeath.

For Your Grandparents' Generation (Mayflower line carriers only) (two clearcopiesofdocuments-notoriginals)

1. Yourgrandmother'slongformgovernmentalbirthcertificateshowingbirth date, place of birth, and parents’ names.Hospital birthcertificatescannotbeused.

2. Yourgrandfather's long formgovernmentalbirthcertificateshowingbirth date, place of birth, and parents’ names. Hospital birthcertificatesshouldbeavoided.

3. Yourgrandparent'scivilmarriagecertificate(s)showingbride,groom,date and place (provide for all marriages).Church marriagecertificatescannotbeused.

4. Death certificate of grandparents (long-form government issued),asappropriate,showingdate/placeofdeathandpossiblyparents.

Noteforgrandparents,iftherearedifficultiesobtainingsomeofthesevitalrecords,please contact the Colony Historian assigned to your application for furtherassistanceandadviceaboutobtainingsubstitutesecondaryrecords.Earliergenerations:Documentation proving connections between each generation from yourgrandparents back to generation 5 or 6 from the Mayflower passenger will berequired. The further back you go, the more difficult it is to find primary vitalrecords.Ifyouhavecopiesofbirth,deathormarriagecertificatesfortheseearliergenerations,by all means provide copies. In addition, Family Bible information,birth andmarriage announcements, obituaries and cemetery records are helpful.Also,ifyouareawareofapublishedfamilygenealogy,providecopiesoftherelevantpagesforyourancestorsandincludeacopyofthetitleandcopyrightpagesofthepublished source that shows the publication date and if possible the Library ofCongress(LOC)number.

Generally,birth,marriageanddeathcertificatesmaybeobtainedbycontactingthestate or the County Clerk of the Countywhere the birth, marriage or death tookplace. Request genealogical records, as they are less expensive than certifiedrecords.Also,somebirth,marriagerecordsmaybeavailableviathestateinsteadofthe county. This varies from state to state. See the attached Start Dates ForRecordingofStateVitalRecords (Attachment1) fora summaryofdateswhenvitalrecordswererequiredineachstate.Sometimes counties or townsmaintained vital records before the statemandatedthem. It isagoodideatocheckwiththem.Ifyourrecordsearchisafterthedateslisted,youshouldplantoseekthematthestate,countyortownoftheevent.Intheevent the record is not found, you should obtain a letter from the governmentrecordsagencythatstatestherecordforthe individualcouldnotbe found.Pleaseprovide any “letter of no record found” as information in support of yourapplication.Plymouthwillwanttoknowthatyouattemptedtofindtherecordfromtheappropriateagency.WHERETOFINDVITALRECORDSThe internet contains many resources to assist with genealogical research. Usecautionwhensearchingtheinternet,assomesitesarebetterthanothersandnotallgenealogical informationportrayedon the internet isaccurate.BelowaresomeoftheonlinesourcesthatyoumayfindusefulingatheringinformationtoproveyourMayflowerlineage.http://vitalrec.com is a website that includes links to each state’s vital recordsoffice.Notethatthisisacommercialsitethatalsoofferstoobtainvitalrecordsatapremiumprice.Itisoftenlessexpensivetocontactthestateorlocalagencydirectlyand request genealogical photocopies of vital records. You do not need to pay apremiumpriceforcertifiedcopies.Justorderonegenealogicalcopyandmakeyourown additional copies as needed. IMPORTANTNOTEABOUTVITALRECORDS:Inreviewingotherapplications,wehavenotedthatsomestatesprovidecertifiedvitalrecordsforabirth,marriageordeathbasedonacomputer-generatedcertificategeneratedfromindexesofrecords.Thesearegenerallymorecostlyanddon’tprovidethelevelofdetailthataphotocopyofafullrecordprovides.Wherepossible,askforagenealogicalcopyofalong-formbirth,deathormarriagecertificate.Theseareoftenlessexpensivethanthecomputer-generateddocuments.

Local recordcustodiansareusuallymoreresponsivetogenealogicalrecordrequests. Typically,localrecordsaretheresponsibilityoftheCountyClerk’sofficeorinthecaseofsomestates in thenortheast, theTownorCityClerk. Go to thecountyor townwebsiteandsearchforvitalrecords.Asnotedabove,whenyourequestdocumentsbesuretoaskforagenealogicalcopyoftherecordasaphotocopyoftheoriginalcertificate.In addition, having a copy of the original certificate will allow you to see othervaluableinformationaboutyourfamily,includingpossiblytheirsignatures,placeofresidence,occupationandotherinformation.Note: Pleasecontact theColonyHistorian for furtherassistanceandadviceaboutobtaining vital records. Each state has different regulations, restrictions andprocedures.Usually,generations7-10inapplicationsarethetoughesttofindfamilyinformation.Wherepossible,vitalrecords,familygenealogies,censusdata,andothersourcesareusedtohelpdocumentyourMayflowerline.Successinfindingtheserecordsisoftenlocation-basedas some towns, countiesandstateshavemuchbetter records thanothers. In some cases, a vital recordmay not exist because the locality normallyresponsible for therecorddidnotstartkeepingrecordsuntilafter theperiodyouare searching for. In other cases, records have been destroyed by fire or otherdisaster. Generally, the clerks or records custodians can advisewhich documentsare available by a date range. Church records are also helpful, if available assecondary sources if civil or governmental records are not available. Photos ofgravestonesandcemetery indexes/inventoriesarealsohelpful sources tosupportbirth,deathandmarriageinformation.Here isa listofprimaryandsecondarydocuments thatcanbeusedtohelpproveyourMayflowerline:PRIMARYRECORDS1)Abirthcertificate(B/C)whichnamesparents,orabaptismalcertificate(Bapt/C)which gives the date/place of birth and parents' names as well as the baptismalinformation.2)Alongformdeathcertificatethatgivesnamesofparentsandbirthinformationaswellasdeathinformation.3)TownVitalRecords(birth,marriageanddeath).

4)Along-formmarriagecertificateormarriagelicensethatgivesbirthinformationandparents’names.5)Abloodlinewillorprobaterecordsadministrationthatnamesasonordaughter.Thesesourcesmayalsoprovidesupportingdocumentationofmarriage.6) A census record that shows a child living in the parent’s household, withrelationship, if given. If no relationship is shown, at least two census recordsshowing the childwith the parents should be submitted. See the guide to censusdataattachedasExhibit2,whichdescribeswhattypeofinformationwascollectedfor each Federal census between 1790 and 1940. Census records should be usedsparingly,limitingthemtothefirstand/orsecondtimeanindividualappearswiththeirparents. TocompleteaMayflowerapplication,thereisnoneedtodocumentan individual’s entire life in every census record they appeared. Some statesperformedtheirowncensuses,whichmaybeusefultoyourapplication;thesestatecensuseswereoftenperformedmidwaybetweenFederalcensuses.7)ABiblerecordthatclearlyshowsachild/parentrelationship.8) A published book or family genealogy that clearly shows a child/parentrelationship.“Published”meanshavingaLibraryofCongressnumberorotherclearevidenceofpublication.Whenusingapublishedgenealogy,pleaseproviderelevantpage for your ancestors along with a copy of the title and copy right pages thatidentifiestheauthor,publisher,datepublished,etc.9)Adeedthatnamesthe"heirsatlaw"sellingproperty.SECONDARY&OTHERSUPPORTINGREFERENCES:1)Censusrecords:CitecensusyearandtheState.Photocopiesofthecensuspages,with the page heading, showing State, county, town and datemust be submitted.ABSTRACTSof thecensusrecordsareNOTACCEPTABLE. • MayflowerIndexnumbers,indexes,orotherorganizations’lineagepapers.• FamilyGroupsheetsandotherun-publishedcompileddata.• Typescriptorcomputergeneratedun-publishedfamilyhistories.• FamilytreeinformationobtainedfromwebpagesandmostInternetsources.
