New Sign to Help Keep Traffic Moving!

There is a new sign which shows the proper way to drop off and pick up students.

It is VITAL that we all keep the traffic moving so we can keep students safe. Some

traffic flow and ENDANGERS students. If you wish to park and walk your child into the building, please

do so, but do not stop your car and drop your child off anywhere but in the front of the building in the

From the Principal’s Desk

Conference Time is Near!

On March 24th and 25th we will be hosting our spring conferences. The parent part-nership with school is so important for your child’s success so we hope you will make time to come and talk about his/her progress. I found a checklist compiled by the Harvard Family Research Project that I thought was worth sharing. Checklist: Before the Conference 1. Schedule a time to meet. If you can’t go at the scheduled time, ask the teacher about other times. 2. Review your child’s work and progress reports. 3. Talk with your child about his or her progress in school. 4. Talk with others about your child’s strengths and needs( coaches, scout leaders, family…) 5. Make a list of questions to ask during the conference. 6. Think about ways you would like to be involved in your child’s learning so you can discuss them with the teacher.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

The South Bay PTA is excited to offer a $500.00 scholarship to a graduating senior that attended South Bay Elementary. The applications are now available at each of the high schools in the North Thurston School District in the career and/or counseling centers. Applications must be completed per the instruction letter and returned to the South Bay Elementary office no later than Friday, May 6th. If you have any questions about this wonderful opportunity, please contact Julie McReynolds at

360-456-3177 for more information, or send me an email at [email protected].

BEAR Program (Be Excited About Reading)

The BEAR program has been another great success this year. The students should have turned in their reading logs to their teachers by Friday, March 4th. We’ll be working on tallying all the reading logs, determining who the top readers are and purchasing prizes for the BEAR store, which will be open on March 31st in the library. 2nd – 6th grade classes will rotate through the store throughout the day and students will get to pick prizes from vari-

ous tables based on the amount of minutes they read during the 2-week program. Kindergarten and 1st grade will have their prizes delivered to them in their classrooms. We are still in need of some volunteers to help with the BEAR store on March 31st. We need help with set-up, running the store and take-down. We’re also looking for some help with coordinating and hosting the ice cream/pizza parties for the winning classrooms in each grade level. If you are interested in helping with this wonderful program, please contact either of us to sign up now. Thank you. Janee McSheffrey Julie McReynolds

PTA TREASURERS TWO CENTS

The South Bay PTA has worked hard this year to keep some wonderful programs run-ning at our school. PTA sponsors so many programs and events during the year and we couldn’t do it without the support of the volunteers, parents and students in our com-munity. We are excited about the upcoming events like the Scholastic Book Fair. Mon-ies raised at the book fair help fund new books for our library. Fun Fair is also coming

soon and this is a great time for families to come and enjoy a fun-filled night together while supporting our school and our kids. We hope to see everyone there!
