Socrates was accused for “impiety” and “corruption mine of the youth”. ”. He was sentenced to death by drinking hemlock. The accusation contains two branches1. One was religious that he was
refusing to worship the gods whom the state worshipped
2. The other is apparently base on moral, but perhaps base on political grounds.

Socrates spoke his last words to Crito saying, "Crito, we owe a Rooster to Asclepius. Please, don't forget to pay the debt."

He chose to stay for several reason:

2.If he fled Athens his teaching would fare no better in another country as he would continue questioning all he met and undoubtly incur their pleasure
