Annual Report 2015-2016

P R E S I D E N T ’S M E S S A G E

It gives me great pleasure to present the 2015/16 Softball Queensland Inc (SQI) Annual Report. This year has proven to be another successful one both on and off the diamond. On the diamond, Qld Heat won the Gilley’s Shield at the National Championship where they dominated throughout the week long competition. Our Under 15 Boys were crowned Australian Regional Champions. In addition, our Under 17 Boys and Girls and Under 19 Men and Women were Runners Up. A number of our members were recognised by Softball Australia Limited (SAL) with Awards of Excellence in 2015. They were: Vivienne Triplett Umpire of the Year Award – Graeme Love SAL Service Awards – Neville Baggow, Sarah Bent, Mick Gorman, Shane

Stephenson, Kim Wakeham and Richard Wakeham. Special congratulations to Marissa Carpadios on her induction into the International Softball Federation Hall of Fame in 2015. At the 2015 Queensland Sport Awards, John Bright was one of three recipients across all sports in Queensland to receive a Service to Sport Award. John is our third recipient of such an award, joining previous winners Barbara Morris and Christine Denkel. Congratulations also to Darren Sibraa who was a finalist in the Queensland Sport Officiator of the Year category. The SQI Board and Office have been working together to deliver a new Strategic Plan to support the growth of softball in Queensland. The new plan will detail a range of strategies and actions to support: the 3 key areas, these being: • growth in participation; • development of clubs and associations; and • the building of foundations for the future. SQI continues to provide significant support to SAL. Our members and staff fill a range of committee positions with a view to ensuring the growth and development of softball from a national perspective. I thank everyone involved for their continued commitment to our great sport. Awards continue to play an important role in SQI and are something that I remain personally committed to. I look forward to another successful Awards Dinner Night. I recognise the committed work of our Board, Technical Directorates and Committee members and their willingness to work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for softball in Queensland. These volunteers make a significant contribution to our sport, a contribution that should not be underestimated. This year we welcomed Jodie Bowering to the Board. Jodie brings to the Board a wealth of experience from the perspective of an elite player and through her employment in the education sector.

Annual Report 2015-2016

I recognise the committed work of our Board, Technical Directorates and Committee members and their willingness to work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for softball in Queensland. These volunteers make a significant contribution to our sport, a contribution that should not be underestimated. This year we welcomed Jodie Bowering to the Board. Jodie brings to the Board a wealth of experience from the perspective of an elite player and through her employment in the education sector. I would also like to thank the SQI Office which has continued to provide great support to both the Board and our Sport as a whole throughout the year. I have been fortunate to work closely with SAL and other state representatives to progress the new Customer Relationship Management System (Database, Registration System and new Websites) and to review the National Insurance Scheme. The introduction of the Database and Registration System will significantly impact positively on the work of our Associations, but ultimately will provide access to better information. The aim of the Insurance Review is to ensure a truly national program that delivers better coverage at lower rates for our members. I acknowledge the Queensland Government and QAS for their continued significant financial support to softball in Queensland. I would like to thank all our sponsors including QAS, Yellow Cabs, Canterbury Clothing Company, Addlon Trading, Leading Edge Sports and Schweppes. Finally, I thank everyone who is involved with softball in QLD for their ongoing support and commitment over the past year. It is greatly appreciated by us all. SQI is in a strong position and I look forward to a successful 2016/17. Mark Jeppesen President Softball Queensland Inc

Annual Report 2015-2016

Y E A R I N R E V I E W G E N E R A L R E P O R T

It is with pleasure that this report is submitted to the members of Softball Queensland Inc outlining the activities undertaken during the 2015/16 year. Whilst the past year has not been without its challenges, progress has been made in a number of areas and there is much to celebrate. We said farewell to John Bright who retired at the 2015 AGM after eighteen (18) years on the SQI Board. John also resigned his position as Chair of the SQI High Performance Committee in February 2016. We welcomed new board member, Jodie Bowering in December 2015 when she was elected to fill a vacant board position. Staff positions remained relatively stable this year with just one major change to the full time positions when Nicki Riley resigned and Alexis Hartigan was appointed to fill the Events Co-Ordinator role in June 2015. Operations Manager, Nicole Watts was on maternity leave for a period and Larissa Slater was employed in the temporary Administration Officer position during this time. Softball Queensland is three-quarters through the three year funding agreement with the Queensland Government. Funding is received on a calendar year cycle and the new three year program will commence in 2017. We are very grateful for the support softball has received from the Queensland Government. In addition to the state sporting organisation funding, a number of district associations and clubs have also received over $330,000 in funding through the Get In The Game suite of programs and the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

The Association remains financially strong and stable returning a small surplus for the year. In addition to the funding received from the Queensland Government through the State Sport and Recreation Organisation Development Program, SQI is also supported by the Queensland Academy of Sport, Canterbury International (CCC), Easton, Softball Australia Ltd, our preferred suppliers Yellow Cabs and awards program sponsor Leading Edge. We thank each of them for their continued support of Softball Queensland.

The Queensland Academy of Sport continues to support Softball Queensland through the provision of funding and support services for the elite program. The success of the Queensland teams in National Championships, the number of individual award winners and athletes selected in Australian squads and teams is a direct result of the impact the QAS investment has had on softball. This is a solid platform to build our future on, particularly with the decision on softball’s re-instatement into the Olympic Games for 2020 to be announced on 4 August 2016.

Association / Club Development

Softball Australia continues to provide funding to support the Association Co-Ordinator position. Starting in 2015, six (6) district associations, Redcliffe, Redlands, Gladstone, Mount Isa, Suncoast-Hinterland and Wynnum, were partners in the program. In February 2016 Suncoast-Hinterland and Wynnum concluded their involvement and Softball Far North Queensland and Gold Coast joined. This program assists the associations and their clubs to improve governance practices, develop plans for sponsorship and fundraising, promotion & marketing, facility development, liaising with councils and building their capacity to improve the delivery of softball. In 2015 all six partner associations have completed the Club Health Checks, developed and begun the implementation of their action plans. Each of these associations have also registered on the SQI Homeplate website.

New Associate Member

Charleville Softball Association was accepted as an Associate Member in October 2015. Similar to Granite Belt, this new group has plans to start a junior competition and social competitions for ladies as well as mixed gender OzPitch or Social 7’s.

National CRM System

Softball Australia has provided a national CRM system through Fox Sporting Pulse to all levels of the sport. All associations were provided with the opportunity to participate in training sessions. The national database was rolled out in time for the 2015/16 summer season and the websites soon after. It is pleasing to note how receptive the associations have been to embrace this change. The competition management component has been used by a small number of associations. Increasing the use of this component will be the focus for the next year. When fully operational, the system will reduce the workload on our volunteer workforce considerably.

Data Collection

A priority for our sport is the collection of participation data. All levels of government and the sport itself need to know the number of participants, age groups, how each person consumes the sport and where they are located. Amongst other things, this data informs everyone of where resources are needed, whether a facility is at capacity or needs upgrading and supports applications for funding at all levels. Data is currently collected by both state and federal governments in the following manner: Full active members: Members who have access to the full range of programs and services offered by the organisation or their affiliated club or association, as a participant, coach or official. This type of member typically pays a full registration fee and participates actively in programs and services. Program participants: Members/participants who have access to a limited range of programs and services offered by the organisation or their affiliated club or association as a participant. This type of member/participant typically pays a lesser registration fee and participates in programs and services rather than in regular competitions. Event participants: Participants who pay a fee per event to participate in the activity and receive limited other services (e.g. newsletter) from the organisation. This type of participant pays no formal membership fee and may not have access to programs and service of the state organisation. School managed competitions: Participants involved in events, competitions or programs organised primarily by schools which are not directly affiliated with state level organisations. School delivered programs: Participants involved in regular competitions, programs and championship events organised by state level organisations which may be at school facilities. In your application you must provide evidence on how you have calculated your participation/membership numbers and you will be required to report on participation levels on an annual basis or as requested.

Associations and clubs are strongly encouraged to collect this data in their area and provide the same to SQI so that the sport can work together at all levels and reap the benefits of knowing who is participating and why. Finally, special mention is made to the many members of the Softball Queensland community for their contribution to the sport. Thank you to the dedicated volunteers including the SQI Board, Committees, Technical Directorates, Awards Panel, State Team Officials, Commissioners and Member Protection Officers. Our sincere appreciation is also extended to our consultants, Major League Marketing, and lawyer, John Mullins, for their continued support and the staff who work diligently and with good humour to support the district associations, state teams and the many volunteers at club level to deliver softball throughout Queensland.

SWING INTO SOFTBALL

Swing into Softball is an alternative structure to delivering junior softball which creates fun,

effective and engaging sessions on a consistent basis. This is achieved by using the game sense

approach which uses games rather than drills to introduce the skills of softball to participants.

Brisbane, Gladstone, Suncoast Hinterland and Far North Queensland again had successful

Swing Into Softball seasons this year with good attendance figures. Redlands ran their first

season this year with great participation.

These five competitions saw 176 children participate in fun games and activities resulting in a

positive softball experience for all.

"Ten teams, five games plus finals. It was great. I can't believe we have completed another season. The girls have had a great carnival with lots of laughter and good memories. We are all

nursing bruises and funny stories. Already we are talking of a Masters team and Courtney is going to play with Steph at Ipswich in her team."

This is the thank you email from a player/coach who participated in 2014 and 2015. Her comments capture the philosophy behind the Murri Women's Softball Tournament: Encouraging participation by a group of women who otherwise do not fit into the traditional softball structure. They want to play in family groups, not in ability levels or club teams. Encouraging participation for fun Recognising cultural diversity Allowing women to dip in and out of softball without having to be registered through a DA or

club and playing and training every week Removing barriers to participation such as financial capacity, time restrictions and skill

levels Providing a stepping stone for women to tap into the traditional structure if that suits them.

BENEFITS OF MURRI WOMEN’S SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

The Murri Women's Softball Tournament provides numerous benefits to the Indigenous communities in the south of Queensland. These benefits are not restricted to the players. Examples include: Physical, mental and social health benefits Women are able to participate whilst involving family which is important to most Indigenous

women Opportunity for supporters to assist with team managerial tasks, looking after children,

providing food and general support. This further reinforces the notion of community. Opportunity for children involved over the two days to see their female family members and

friends modelling positive sport and health behaviours Provision for Children to participate in supervised activities including softball skills sessions Recognition given to the importance of culture by including indigenous ceremonies and
