The following is an excerpt from Softball Skills & Drills, Second Edition (Human Kinetics, 2011), written by Judi Garman, one

of the most successful coaches in college softball history and the winner of 7 national championships as a player and coach;

and Michelle Gromacki, the head coach of Cal State Fullerton softball, one of the most prestigious programs in the nation.

GripWhen gripping the bat, the hitter should apply pressure with the fingers, not thepalms. She grips the bat where the calluses are. The bottom hand (left hand for a right-handed batter) controls the bat,and the top hand supports the bat loosely. The bottom hand grips the bat as a person would grip a golf club (seeaccompanying photo). The top hand is placed against the bottom hand with the door-knocking knuckles (middleknuckles) of both hands in a straight line. The arms are not crossed. The bat is gripped loosely—no white knuckles—and the wrists have flexibility. Some hitters curl the index finger of the top hand so that it only lightly touches the bat.For better bat control, the player may choke up on the bat by moving both hands several inches up from the knob. Ofcourse, a choke grip means a shorter bat and less power.

Called “a must-have for every player” by Olympic gold medalist and two-time World Cup champion Jenny Topping, SoftballSkills & Drills, Second Edition is now available in bookstores everywhere, as well as online at www.HumanKinetics.com. Thebook is packed with new content, including more than 200 full-color photos and illustrations.

Hitting MechanicsMany philosophies are used in teaching players how to hit. Hitting coaches have their ownways of saying things, and many batters have distinctive styles. Through computer and

video analysis, we are able to break down the swing and study the basic elements thatall successful hitters use.

Bat SelectionThe right bat makes it easier to hit well. Each playershould choose a bat that’s the right weight, length, andsize for her and that fits her budget. The bat is anextension of the arms; it must feel right. It must be of asize and weight that the player can swing hard and caneasily control throughout the entire swing.

As a general rule, bigger, stronger players prefer a heavierbat for maximum power. Smaller players usually benefitfrom a lighter bat that allows greater bat speed. Battersoften use a bat that is too heavy, which leads to mechanicalproblems and sometimes injury. To determine whether a batis too heavy, the player should grip it with one hand at theknob and hold it straight out parallel to the ground atshoulder height. If the bat wavers, or if the player cannot holdthat position for at least a minute, the bat is too heavy. Asweight increases, bat control usually decreases. In terms oflength, the shorter the bat, the more control a hitter will have, but she will sacrifice power. The longer the lever, the morepower the hitter will have, though with less control. The bat mustalso be long enough to allow full plate coverage when the player

swings. Can she hit a ball hard off a tee placed low on the outside corner?

Most bats are built with a specific ratio of length and weight. Youth batsrange in weight from 16 to 22 ounces (453 to 624 g) and in length from 25to 31 inches (63 to 79 cm). College players usually swing a bat that weighs22 to 26 ounces (624 to 737 g) and 32 or 34 inches (81 or 86 cm) long.Manufacturers use negative numbers to show the weight-to-length ratio(e.g., –9, –10, and so on). The length subtracted by the negative number isthe weight of the bat. This means, for example, that a 31-inch bat with a –9ratio weighs 22 ounces. Selecting the correct weight really depends on twocritical factors: strength and hitting style.

Because the player will be swinging the bat many times, it must feelcomfortable in her hands. The size of the hands will determine the thicknessof the handle that a hitter can grip and manipulate comfortably.

The barrel size and location and the size of the sweet spot are otherattributes to consider. The sweet spot, or “center of percussion,” is the placewhere contact with the ball gives the hitter a good feeling rather than asting. It is also the place that sends the ball the farthest. The bigger thebarrel, the larger the hitting surface and the larger the sweet spot. Thesmaller the hitting area, the more bat control required to be successful. Abottle bat provides a large hitting surface and is an excellent bat for buntingand for beginners.

The type of grip that bat manufacturers put on the handle of their bats alsoaffects the way the bat feels when the ball is hit. Leather or syntheticleather gives a tackier feel for a surer grip. Rubber grips absorb more of theshock on impact, and cushioned grips decrease the shock even more.

The composition of the bat helps determine how far the ball goes when hit.New materials, with names that seem to change every year, allowmanufacturers to make bats with very thin walls. But rules vary, so playersmust be sure that the bat is stamped “Approved” for use in their league. Thetwo primary categories of materials are aluminum alloys and graphite ortitanium lined. Aluminum bats come in a variety of alloys, each with adifferent weight, but generally aluminum alloys are thinner and moredurable and have a larger sweet spot. They come in single-layer or double-layer construction. Double-layer bats offer more durability and powerbecause the ball rebounds off the bat with more authority. Graphite andtitanium are sometimes added to thinner-wall aluminum bats to decreaseweight and therefore increase the batter’s hitting speed. The addition ofthese materials also reduces vibration and the sting a batter may feel oncontact with the ball.

The thinner the wall, the greater the trampoline effect. The bat gives atcontact with the ball and propels it away faster. The greater the trampolineeffect, the greater distance the ball can go. And a bat with thin walls dentsmore easily. College players often get a new bat each year. We recommendthat players save a good bat for games and use an old bat for practice.Players should use softer balls for hitting practice, ifpossible, and should never use their good bat on thehard plastic balls at commercial batting cages.

ATHENS, GA. -- When it comes to exemplifying success and advancing to the NCAA postseasonaction, this is just another walk in the park for the Georgia Bulldogs.Having made eight consecutive postseason appearances, they have come on strong this season to

climb to the top of the NFCA rankings—a position they have longed for. There is something that really stands out with this team. With most teams, no matter what sport, no

matter if it is high school or on the collegiate level, there is an intense focus on the seniors of the teamas if the team loses its functionality without seniors. What is very noticeable about the Georgia Bulldogs is the great attention they have given to their

freshman and sophomores, which has built an unstoppable force of seniors. In a University of Georgia article back in January 2009, they said, “The group of returning sophomores

all saw playing time last season and the incoming freshmen have already displayed promising talent.”The Bulldogs’ potent offense has allowed them to string together a number of consistent wins.Senior third baseman, Alisa Goler is among the most resilient players in the NCAA. The University of

Georgia said at the beginning of this month that Goler had been named a top 25 finalist for the USASoftball Collegiate Player of the Year. With experienced younger players that have blossomed into seasoned veterans, this not

only sets the team up for success this season, but also for seasons to come. If theBulldogs can manage to keep up their current offensive campaign, then they will be aformidable opponent come postseason action and a viable candidate for taking homethe national championship.

GAINESVILLE, FL—Gators, notoriously aggressive animals, exhibit such qualities such as strength, ability to strikefear in their enemies, and dominance in the animal kingdom. And with a nearly flawless record 26 games into theseason, dominance is exactly what they have achieved. It should then come as no surprise that the Florida Gators softball squad has demonstrated similar qualities. In the

kingdom of collegiate softball, these ladies make the rules. After all, propelling themselves back to the top of NCAAsoftball leaves something to be said about these ladies. With dramatic wins over some of the toughest competition inthe NCAA in the last couple of years such as 2008 champion Arizona State Sun Devils and the Alabama Crimson Tide, there is no doubt the Gators will be expected to, once again, get a taste of the Women's College World Series.

To become the nation's top-ranked squad, you can not just dominate in one aspect of the game, but youmust be able to excel in multiple areas. That is exactly what the Gators have done.

There is no “I” in team, or even just in the circle. What makes Florida's pitching staff so successful is thefact that they recognize it is not merely just one player, but a “staff.” Just as there is no “I” in team, there is certainly no “pitcher” in team as well. The Gators pack a powerfulpunch offensively to perfectly complement their defense, which is why this fearsome team sits at the topof the charts.

With a full schedule of games left on the Gator's schedule, it is no longer a question of if theywill make it into the playoffs, but how deep they will go.

TUCSON, AZ.-- The great state of Arizona is known for the Grand Canyon, but also quiteidentifiable with its heat—and in more than one way.Sure their temperatures soar over the summer, but this team brings and unleashes the heat on

a completely different level. As prior national champions, the Wildcats of the University of Arizona will accept nothing less

than to repeat their feats of years past. As of March 14, 2010, Arizona sat as the number four-rankedteam in the nation, which should come as no surprise to the softball community. With some rough losses earlier this seasons, the Wildcats decided that it was time to put their

champion’s hats on once again and march back to the top and that is just what they have done.Since that rough patch in their season, they have managed to climb and sustain a number fourposition in the country and reinstated their demand for respect not just from their fans, but alsofrom the rest of the NCAA community.

The toughest part of Arizona's season is right on the horizon, though. The PAC-10 has areputation of producing some unmatched competition. With early conference winsover Oregon, Oregon State, and UCLA, the future looks bright. Watch your rear view

mirrors NCAA community because Arizona State is coming.

TUSCALOOSA, AL—Relative to two seasons ago, it was starting to look as if thetide was rolling out on Alabama. After coming so close to making it to the championship dance two years ago,

then completely dropping the ball in the dance last year, fans and critics weren't surethat the Crimson Tide would be back for another cut-throat season. Then the 2011 season began.Although Alabama is consistently a team to be reckoned with during the regular season, all eyes are

on the Crimson Tide team that steps into the post season because merely making it to the dance at theend of the season is not going to satisfy the organization. With a solid pitching staff and a defense that can compete with the best of them, Alabama has

something else up their sleeve as well. The offensive firepower is where the Crimson Tide really begins to measure up. As the Crimson Tide set sail for an action-packed season, they look to gain back the respect they

have longed for in the NCAA tournament. With a couple of conference wins under their belt, beprepared to look for them when it comes time for the playoffs.

When I was a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s,softball meant a bunch of guys with coolers (andbellies) full of beer running around on a Sundaymorning hoping they don’t pull a muscle. My, how thathas changed. Fast pitch softball is now one of the fastest growing

sports in the country and a staple in every ExtraInnings indoor training facility. The game is

changing and we intend to continue tochange with it. This is serious softball andindoor training facilities can be a key partof helping an average softball playerbecome great, or even helping an amateursimply learn the fundamentals—something that is not always offered inevery city or town for young age groups. That’s where indoor training facilities canbe a real “home run.”Indoor training offers a more efficient workout because players can utilize the manydifferent stations and multi-use tunnels

available. Training goes far beyond just batting teesand ground balls these days. In every Extra Inningsfacility, you’ll find a training room with the latesttraining tools, in addition to batting cages. It’simportant for coaches to know how to make the mostof each athlete’s time in the facility. By breaking kids

into groups, they can rotate throughout the facility, cutting back on down time and allowing them to getinstruction and practice in every facet of the game. The days of one player hitting and 15 others standingaround and shagging on the field are long gone in anindoor facility.Another benefit of indoor training is accessibility.

It’s always 70 degrees and sunny in an indoor facility.Indoor training centers are a great solution to fieldshortages and poor weather conditions. Extra Inningssees a great deal of travel softball teams in ourfacilities for their winter training, which starts wellbefore the season, and they’ll never have to cancel orreschedule a practices. We not only provide them witha place to work out, but they can also get theirequipment, uniforms and accessories all under oneroof. Best of all, these products are beingrecommended by professional instructors who knowthe game and what’s best for each individual player. It’s no longer a world where a player comes in, hits

a few balls and leaves. Extra Innings offersprofessional instruction on pitching, hitting, fieldingand strength and conditioning, and there are manydifferent ways to use an indoor facility to train. Campsand clinics are a great way to start because kids canlearn the basics of the game in a fun group setting.Hitting and pitching are the most popular clinics, butthey are offered in all aspects of the game. Group andprivate lessons are important for honing skills and areall also available for all areas of softball. We have found that it’s great to start with kids as

they begin their journey with softball. We can teachthem the fundamentals when they first get into the

game and then grow with them as they developtheir skills. Training for young softball andbaseball players is very similar, especiallywith fielding, throwing and hitting. Onedifference for softball is “slap hitting,” aspecific type of hitting that many softballinstructors teach. Of course, pitching is veryimportant in softball as well. Facilities need to

be able to offer windmill pitching instruction andwe make sure all of our facilities have professionalinstructors that can teach this style of pitching, whichis truly an art form. These instructors can be hard tofind, so many girls come to Extra Innings specificallylooking to train with them.Because it’s becoming such a large part of our

business, we have made sure that we have everything

softball players need to train. Special softballmounds are set up in all Extra Innings facilities. All of our pitching machines can throw bothsoftballs and baseballs with a simpleadjustment, and our pro shops have all the toolsand accessories that softball players need fromthe top names in the game, including Combat,DeMarini, Nike, Louisville Slugger, Easton andMizuno. Each of these vendors has made aconcentrated effort to cater to the softballmarket and Extra Innings is bringing thisproduct directly to the girls where they train. Wewant to make sure if girls are doing lessons andworking with our professional instructors, theyalso have access to the tools they’re using in thefacility so they can practice at home. As ourvendors are growing their softball product lines, they are catering to their market by signingnationally recognized professional softballplayers who are role models for these younggirls. In the last year alone, we have had JennyFinch host a clinic in our Bloomington/Normal,Ill. facility and Lisa Fernandez in ourMidland/Odessa, Texas and New England areafacilities. The turnout was phenomenal in everycase and we are planning many more of theseevents in the future. For years, it has seemed like indoor training

centers focused solely on baseball, but at ExtraInnings, baseball and softball are treatedequally. Softball is by far the fastest growingpart of our business, and I believe it willcontinue to grow for years to come. It’s been along road for these girls to find and feelwelcome in an indoor training center, and wewant to be sure that they know they can callExtra Innings their home base.Mark Andrews is vice president of franchise

operations for Extra Innings. Extra Innings is anindoor softball and baseball training center, providing state-of-the-art practice facilities, professional instruction and a nationallyrecognized Pro Shop to fulfill the needs ofplayers of all ages and ability levels in a fun, family atmosphere. Extra Innings beganfranchising in 2004 and has 40 locations in 20states in all regions of the country. Projectionscall for close to 60 locations to be in operationby the end of 2012.

Osbourn Park, VA. -- The batting cage netadjacent to the home dugout on Osbourn ParkHigh School’s softball field is taking a beating. It’s Jessica South’s turn to swing and the

sophomore has produced so many line drivesthat one of them might just rip its way throughthe webbing at any moment. Even the ground balls that bound off her bat

leave a mark in the turf. And this is just from afew warm-up swings prior to the start ofpractice. Imagine what opposing pitchers havefelt like trying to keep South off the bases sinceshe made her varsity debut last spring. That’s been nearly impossible. The Yellow

Jackets’ leadoff batter doesn’t make many outs, which is one reason why Osbourn Park capturedits first district tournament championship since1994 and her travel team, the Manassas Blaze, won a USSSA World Series. “She’s very aggressive at the plate and

she’s fast. She can run out infieldsingles and get into scoring position,”

said Art Dietrich, who coachedOsbourn Park to its bestseason in nearly two decadeslast spring. “Once she gets onbase, she’s going to score with theplayers she has behind her.” The batters who follow South in the

Yellow Jackets’ lineup – most notably AmandaMeade, Erica Field and Ashley Runion – combinedto drive in 85 runs last spring as OP went 22-2 andset a school record for wins in a single season. That’sa tribute to the team’s youngest starter, who batted .350and reached base 62 percent of the time. “I always go up there expecting to hit,” South said.

She carried that same approach with her into thebatter’s box during the summer and helped theManassas Blaze U14 travel team win 51 games enroute to capturing a USSSA World Series championship. “Winning the World Series is overwhelming,”South said. “Our team has never done something

that big. It was so much fun.”Osbourn Park has rarely experiencedanything that big either. The YellowJackets went 16 seasons without adistrict title before South arrived. But onceshe stepped into the leadoff spot,

everything changed.“I’ve never been a leadoff batter, even for

my other team, so it’s really cool. I love it,” shesaid. “I was just hoping I’d make at least JV, butwhen they told me I made varsity I was so excited.I was jumping up and down when I got home. “The girls are amazing. I love playing with all of them.We just get along so well and we play as a team.”South’s exuberance hastened the bondingprocess. Her excitement for softball is so plentifulthat the Yellow Jackets essentially embraced heryouthful enthusiasm and used it to put together theirbest season ever.“She’s been a catalyst for a lot of the things thatmatter,” Dietrich said. When South arrived at Osbourn Park, the YellowJackets thought they were getting a pitcher. Butthat was before they found out how good she isat chasing down fly balls. Dietrich wound upstarting her in the outfield instead.“She can throw the ball, but when we put her in the

outfield she was such a natural and covered so muchground that we can’t imagine playing her anywhereelse,” Dietrich said. “She can out-run most balls hit herway and on more than one occasion she’s stopped apotential rally by making a great play.“She’s everything we wanted in an outfielder.”

As it turned out, the Jackets already had their ace in

Runion, who went 17-2 with a 1.02 ERA afterreturning to the field following an 18-month battlewith leukemia. And that allowed South to emerge asone of Virginia’s best left fielders. “I never used to like outfield, but it’s sort of grown

on me,” South said. “The best thing is the look onthe other team’s faces when you’ve made a catchthat they didn’t think you would make.” South used to get the same thrill playing soccer,

but she essentially gave up that sport once shediscovered softball nearly eight years ago. Now she plays fastpitch during the fall, spring

and summer. Her winters are for basketball, atradition that began at Emmanuel Christian School, where she was a student for 10 years beforeenrolling at Osbourn Park. “Emmanuel Christian is a really small school.

There’s barely 200 kids in the entire school so thatwas a really big change,” she said. “The first weekof school was overwhelming, but I got used to itpretty quickly.” South can now say the same thing about public

school pitching. “She’s young and there’s a lot of room forimprovement,” Dietrich said. “But overall, she’s oneof the best athletes I’ve ever seen.”

Kenzie Fowler will be taking Mizuno with her tothe circle this spring. And so will a lot of otheraspiring fastpitch softball hurlers.Relying on the popularity of the University of

Arizona sophomore ace and one of the nation’s mostesteemed college programs, Mizuno recentlyreached a multi-year agreement to become theequipment partner of the Arizona Wildcats.“Many young players emulate players at the

highest levels and want to use the same products astheir favorite teams or players,” Said Mizunospokesperson Larry Brushett. “Many youngerplayers will gravitate towards Mizuno solely becauseArizona players are using them.”Fowler, like Jennie Finch before her, is one of

fastpitch softball’s most talented athletes. Last year,as a freshman, she led the Wildcats to a second-place finish in the Women’s College World Series. And Mizuno’s hope is that she will produce

another outstanding performance at the WCWS. “Most players consider the Women’s College WorldSeries the highest award achievable in softball.Arizona’s track record speaks for itself with thenumber of appearances and wins,” Brushett said.“With the exposure from participation at theWomen’s College World Series, Mizuno will be able to showcase its products to thefastpitch audience.”Arizona’s entire softball team will use the

company’s full line of equipment, ranging fromgloves, bags and protective gear to, perhaps mostnotably, the high performance Frenzy 3.0 bats. “Having an association with a major college

program that is well recognized as the top softballprogram in the nation gives Mizuno products and, specifically, bats national recognition andcredibility,” Brushett said. “We believe the

association will benefit both organizations. Arizonafelt Mizuno gave them the best of service and qualityproducts that provided their players the ability toperform at the highest levels.”Arizona coach Mike Candrea is pretty much an

expert on quality. He’s won eight national titles andhas won over 1,100 games with the Wildcats since1986. He also owns a pair of Olympic medals, leading the U.S. national team to gold in 2004 andsilver in 2008.“We look forward to working with a company

that has been instrumental in growing the sport offastpitch softball,” Candrea said. “Mizuno’scommitment to our game is evident through theirexcellent product line and visibility at softballevents around the country. Our program is eagerto work with such a great company that isdedicated to sporting goods innovation and thefuture of fastpitch softball.”Mizuno’s influence on the game is as far reaching

as Candrea’s. The equipment, footwear and apparel company isan official supplier of Team USA and is alreadyendorsed by superstar players like Jennie Finchand Natasha Watley. This spring, Fowler will introduce a new

generation of young athletes to the brand name thatis among the industry leaders in design, technologyand performance for women’s softball.“We have a storied history of supporting fastpitch

softball,” Mizuno President Bob Puccini said. “Manyof the games best players, at all levels of play, rely onthe quality and craftsmanship of our products to helpthem perform to their potential. “We’re looking forward to helping the Wildcats

continue to be one of the most dominant programs inall of NCAA Fastpitch.”

2011 CF4 ST -10 WTDXCFPHittin' Bombs Into the Parking Lot. For 2011, the CF4 ST has been taken to a new level. The mad scientists atDeMarini have amped up the awesome power of their Pitch Black Plus composite by adding twice the Silver Tracebonding agent making a stronger, stiffer bat. That means the sweet spot has been extended further down the barrelthan ever before and DeMarini's high quality composite material means thinner barrel walls, bonded in a Stacked wallbarrel design that creates a dynamic springboard hitting surface. With the bigger sweet spot, the CF4 -10 is becomingthe weapon of choice to bring to the plate.

2011 CF4 ST -9 WTDXCFFThe Way to a Women's Heart. Redefining what elite collegiate and high school players demand from an all compositebat, the new CF4 for 2011 adds twice the Silver Trace bonding agent to the both the barrel and handle, making astronger, stiffer bat. The sweet spot has been extended further down the barrel than ever before. With the bigger sweetspot, and end loaded feel, you'll love bringing this power machine to the plate. While the CF4 is designed to flex andrecoil through the swing, the DeMarini exclusive Pitch Black Plus stacked composite material gives the player thefeeling of a stiffer and stronger bat. When the impact energy attempts to escape, the Clutch 2 Endcap send it back intothe barrel, launching the ball from the surface of the bat.

2011 CF4 ST INSANE -10 WTDXCFIInsane End Loaded Feel. Seeking to level up your hitting performance, but you aren't quite ready to graduate to thenext weight drop? Look no further than the CF4 Insane. Built for the player seeking extra power in their swing,DeMarini has moved the evenly distributed weight all the way to the end of the barrel. If you're a power hitter, moremass at full extension results in additional swing speed at contact giving you more power and more distance. Inaddition to doubling the amount of Silver Trace bonding agents in the Pitch Black Plus stacked composite andextending the sweet spot towards the handle, DeMarini's designed hubcap redirects the outgoing energy back intothe barrel. The new 2011 Z-1000 Slowpitch bat features the Inner Socket Technology (iST) that is designed to maintain handle stiffness while joining the barrel andhandle together, providing players with a great solid feel and larger sweet spot. Vibration from a miss hit is absorbed before it reaches a player’s hands.Without the worry of sting or vibration from “off sweetspot hits” a player can maintain acceleration through impact for increased and more consistentperformance.

The ASA approved SB11Z also features the new Swing 1 inner Disc Technology (S1iD) that allows the barrel to flex to its maximum allowable performance levelfrom SWING 1. This bat is “Game Ready” from the time you take off the wrapper. The two inner discs are positioned inside the barrel at the sweet spot to stopthe barrel from flexing past the performance limit, giving players maximum allowable performance. Precise positioning of iD within the barrel also allows us tobring up the performance around the sweet spot – which means you get a larger performing sweet spot, not just a better feeling one. The Z-1000 is available in both ASA certified (SB11Z; 34”/26 oz., 34”/27 oz., 34”/28 oz., 34”/30 oz.) and two non-ASA versions, balanced (SB11ZB; 34”/26 oz.,34”/27 oz., 34”/28 oz., 34”/30 oz.) and end loaded (SB11ZE; 34”/26 oz., 34”/27 oz., 34”/28 oz., 34”/30 oz.).

The new 2011 Xeno Fastpitch bat features two technologies that maximize the performance of the full composite barrel. The Inner Socket Technology (iST)maintains handle stiffness while joining the barrel and handle together, providing players with a great solid feel and larger sweet spot. Vibration from a misshit is absorbed before it reaches a player’s hands. Without the worry of sting or vibration from “off sweetspot hits” a player can maintain acceleration throughimpact for increased and more consistent performance. The new Swing 1 inner Disc Technology (S1iD) allows the barrel to flex to its maximum allowable performance level from SWING 1. This bat is “Game Ready”from the time you take off the wrapper. The two inner discs are positioned inside the barrel at the sweet spot to stop the barrel from flexing past theperformance limit, giving players maximum allowable performance. Precise positioning of iD within the barrel also allows us to bring up the performancearound the sweet spot – which means you get a larger performing sweet spot, not just a better feeling one. The Xeno is available in a -10 drop (30”/20 oz.; 31”/21 oz.; 32”/22 oz.; 33”/23oz.; 34”/24oz.), -9 drop (33”/24oz.; 34”/25oz.), and -8 drop (33”/25oz.;34”/26oz.).

It was quite a sight watching the left-hander turndouble plays. Trey Ferguson usually makes thingshappen in the outfield for the Texas Crew slow pitchsoftball team, but when they needed him for a fewgames at second base at the Shamrock Shootouthe came through in a big way.“If there was an MVP it would have to be Trey

Ferguson,” Crew coach Thomas Flowers said.No matter where he played on the field, Fergusonseemed to come up with a big play. And that wasthe case in the batter’s box, too, as the TexasCrew won seven of eight games to capture theBracket A championship.“He was lights out for us defensively and at

the plate he only got out maybe five times allweekend,” Flowers said of Ferguson. “He madesome game-changing plays in the championshipand “if” games, too.”

The Crew defeated H&H 20-19 and 21-8 to finishwith a five-game winning streak. “I’ll take that everyweekend if I can get it,” Flowers said. He’ll certainly take the tournament-high 111 runs

his team scored as the Texas Crew improved itsUSSSA tournament record to 26-10 – a mark thatnow includes first-place finishes at the Fuzzy’s TacoSBW and Shamrock Shootout. The Texas Crew has finished among the top 5

in six consecutive tournaments and has reachedthe finals in three, including a runner-up finish atthe Lone Star NTX Winter World. They were thirdat the prestigious North vs. South event in NorthTexas and have earned a winning record in all butone competition. In securing their second title of the spring, the

Crew topped a 16-team field by averaging nearly 14runs per game in support of pitcher Cody Boyles. “In all the games we played, he walked maybe fiveguys,” Flowers said.

And Boyles was backed up by some pretty gooddefense from Ferguson as well as third basemanLoupe Mendoza as the Mansfield, Texas-basedsquad totaled 56 runs in its last three games of theShamrock Shootout.“He made some really good snags and was solid

at the plate all weekend,” Flowers said. That enabled the Crew to shut out the TexasStampede 12-0 and also rout the Shockers 15-2.They even avenged a loss to the Padres with a 14-1 whipping to make it to the finals, where theyswept runner-up H&H. “Softball is softball,” Flowerssaid. “We just go out and play.”

Bad Influence coach Ed Santos was just hoping togive the White Settlement area of Texas a little bit ofa shout-out.He’d rounded up the 12 best Class E slow-pitch softball

players he could find from the northwestern suburb of FortWorth and entered the Shamrock Shootout with theintention of finding out what they could do against the bigcity teams in a tournament setting. “It was our first time as a team together,” Santossaid. “We decided to go out there and see whatwe’ve got.”Santos found out a couple of things. Bad Influence

has some quick young guys at the top of the order, such as 19-year-old Texas Tech student RyanHettman, who created havoc on the base paths; theyhave some tough outs like Willie Brown and theyhave two pitchers with contrasting styles who don’tgive up many runs.

Oh, and one more thing. Santos discovered thathis guys can play.Bad Influence made the kind of first impression

that every new team dreams about – goingundefeated in five games to capture the Bracket Bfirst-place trophy.“I don’t think anybody had a bad day,” he said. “We

carry 12 players and everybody bats.” Leadoff batter Nick Reese initiated an offensive attackthat produced 61 runs and Bad Influence swept theShockers by scores of 11-1 and 17-6 in thechampionship round to capture the tournament title. With appropriately-named left fielder Chase

Wiggins running down virtually anything hit his wayand Hettman teaming up with Jeremy Watts to drivein a bunch of runs, Bad Influence rolled to big winsover the North Texas Rays, Other Guys andTumbleweeds Sports Bar prior to meeting theShockers in the finals. The offense averaged 12.2 runs per game, which

was more than enough for the dynamic pitching duo

of Stephen Frair and Craig Stephenson, whorotated every two innings just to keep opposingline-ups guessing a bit.“One of the things we tried to do was give other

teams a different look every few innings,” saidSantos, who spent time behind the plate and atsecond base during the championship run.The strategy worked to perfection. And for the community of White Settlement,

the shout-out was loud and clear. “It’s a great start. The team came together alittle quicker than I expected,” Santos said. “Itwas a great tournament for us, especially as anew team.”

Sparks, NV. -- With the luck of a four leafclover and a talented group of players that hit.800 across the board as a team the Nevadabased coed team Thongs & Dongs compiled aperfect 5-0 record on their way to capturing theDublin Dirty Tournament held at the Golden EagleSports Complex in Sparks, NV. In addition to compiling a undefeated record

T & D outscored their opponents 127-20 overthe course of the tournament. "Our teamhitting was phenomenal throughout the day aseach player rained line drives to all field ineach of our victories," Said T & D managerScott Walters. " If a player or two reached base

we were confident that the next batters would bringthem in to score." T & D started the tournament off with a

impressive 37 run out put as they out hit and outplayed the Mustangs for a 37-3 victory. Their batsdid not cool off after that win as they continue tolight up the scoreboard with a convincing 27-3 winover lucky Charms in game two and a 24-4offensive victory over the Shave This."While our offense continued to pour on the runs

our pitcher Dallas Kester also had a outstandingtournament as he kept the opposing batters offstride throughout the tournament and at the plate hemade only one out in five games." Said Walters. In the undefeated game against Lucky Charms T

& D scored at will on early inning rallies and they

never looked back as they went on to score a 20-3victory which advanced them to the Championshipgame against Free Agents. The two titans battled it out throughout the early

innings however T & D once again flexed theiroffensive might s they went onto to win by the scoreof 19-7."This is the type of tournament were everything

goes right," Said Walters. ""Offensively our hitterswere on fire as they produce over a hundred runs forthe tournament. Our defense was equally asimpressive as we held teams to an average of fourruns per game.""This is a special tournament with some very

unique set of rules that greatly added to the fun ofthe event."

The Luck of the Irish Each team is allowed one defensive or offensive do-over"mulligan" PER GAME and prove the other team just got lucky .When a team uses a mulligan, everything goes back to what itwas before the play occurred.

The Irish Inning In the 3rd inning of each game, the next batter after the secondout is recorded will count as two runs if scored. If a legalhomerun is hit all runners on base position will count asdouble. The eligible player must wear an IRISH hat. If thebatter is female in a men's division, she will count as four runs.

Brutal RuleEach Strikeout or foul out awards opponent 1 run

Blarney BallIn a men's division, girls always count as double the runs.

However, they must start and field. No pinch runners. Mustdefensively field through the inning they bat.

The Brasser FlipBefore each game a coin is flipped, the winning side willchoose either Home or Away--- or can give up the right andchoose .98 bats or 1.20 bats.

The Arseway WheelMuch more agressive in 2011. Each team gets one spin beforeeach game (example rules- TBD) Examples 1. Add one homerun to your teams maximum2. Start 1st inning with 4 outs3. Get 1 run for your team this game!4. Hit 1 off the wall = Win $1005. Unlimited pinch runners6. Opponents batters start 1st inning with 2 strikes7. Start the fourth inning off with a runner on second base.
