SoHo the new nexus of New York City, originally associated with the arts, has become famous for both destination shopping and its downtown scene.
It is an archetypal example of inner-city regeneration and gentrification, encompassing socio-economic, cultural, political and architectural developments

History
Manhattan in the 1600s was covered with grassy hills, streams, meadows, forests, and marshes. Trails through this wilderness connected six Indian villages.
To understand fully present-day SoHo, it is helpful to imagine the past and to picture the farms, theaters, and hotels that once existed here.

The early 1800s was an elegant period in SoHo's history. Principally residential, the neighborhood was first inhabited by the wealthy and soon after by the middle class
In due time, rapid development attracted many business enterprises. Hotels and theaters, elegant stores, stately mansions, minstrel halls, gambling casinos, and brothels sprang up along
Broadway.
The name is a blend of "South“ and "Houston“ from "south of Houston Street“. The official historical district from 1973 together with Houston to the north, is north of Canal Street, and between West Broadway and Crosby Streets

Paik, Meredith Monk, Chuck Close, plus many others helped create the ideal situation to make SoHo the Nexus of creative activity for a very magical time in the 1960's. SoHo came to represent the hip, avant garde scene.

Restaurants - Balthazar Balthazar serves traditional bistro meals from breakfast
through late-night supper. Opened by Keith McNally in the spring of 1997, Balthazar
offers a French menu prepared by chefs de cuisine Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson.
Diners can also choose from an extensive wine list, a raw seafood bar, and breads and pastries from Balthazar bakery.
Balthazar is renowned for its exceptional design. The building was converted from a leather wholesaler's warehouse to an airy space.
Restaurants – Delicatessen Design firm Nema Workshop collaborated with Thomas Amadei to create the
bi level space, which features such striking elements as stainless steel and glass garage doors that wrap the entire façade and retract seamlessly into the ceiling when open and a glass-roofed lounge with a large scale mural.
With its innovative twist on comfort food, friendly vibe, and modern yet inviting design, delicatessen is a welcome addition to New York’s vibrant Soho neighborhood.
