The advent of PVCu was the greatest single advancement in the development of sanitary pipework systems. MFP has, since 1967, in association with MarleyPlumbing and Drainage, been the leader in Research and Development of singlestack systems and have introduced many technical innovations which simplify workon site, improve performance and reduce installation costs.
The MFP range of products for soil and waste disposal is designed to satisfy therequirements of all types of buildings, whether domestic, industrial, commercial orpublic, and forms part of a complete MFP range of above and below ground drainagesystems. Soil systems are available in diameters of 82, 110 and 160mm. Waste systems are available in diameters of 32, 40 and 50mm.
Standards:
MFP Soil and Waste systems are manufactured to conform to appropriate nationaland international standards.
MFP is licensed by the British Standards Institute to apply the kitemark to productsmanufactured to BS EN 1329-1:2000 for Unplasticised Soil and Ventilating Pipes andFittings. This mark may be used only by those licensed under the certification markscheme operated by B.S.I..
The presence of the kitemark on, or in relation to, a product is an assurance that thegoods conform to an appropriate standard, and have been produced under a qualitysystem conforming to I.S. EN ISO 9002 : 1994 which involves regular third partyinspection of the manufacturer’s works.

Further and more detailed information on sanitarypipework systems is available in Code of Practice BS EN 12056: 2000, Part 1 to 5, which contains informationon levels of performance and discharge rates from
sanitary appliances, as well as extensive recommenda-tions for design, installation, testing and maintenance ofabove ground non-pressure pipework systems. The recommendations contained in this Code of Practiceare based on improved technology in plumbing andresearch undertaken by the Building ResearchEstablishment and product manufacturers, the result ofwhich have been proven in practice.
Regular consultation is essential between architects andplumbing engineers throughout all stages of design. Thiswill help to ensure that the positions of ducts and sanitary appliances permit an efficient pipework systemto be installed with minimum cost.
All the technical information contained in this brochureis based on these publications and, while every efforthas been made to ensure its accuracy, no responsibilityis accepted for errors or omissions.
Pipework Sizes
PVCu Soil systems pipework is available in 82, 110 and160mm diameters nd is manufactured to meet therequirements of either BS EN 1329-1:2000 or LocalGovernment Specification.
Waste systems pipework in PVCu and MPVCu is manufactured to satisfy 1989 in sizes 32, 40 and 50mmdiameter.
The pushfit waste system in polypropylene is in accor-dance with BS EN 1451-1:2000 and is available in sizes32 and 40mm diameters.
Thermal Movement
The co-efficient of linear expansion of PVCu is 6 x 10 –5mm/mm/°C, which means that PVCu pipeworkmay expand or contract by up to 0.6mm per metre per10°C change of temperature. It is important, therefore, that this movement is allowed for by providing an expansion gap at ring seal joints. This is done by push-ing the spigot fully into the ring seal socket, marking thepipe at the socket edge and then withdrawing the pipeby 10mm. Care should be taken that this gap is not lost during further installation.
Chemical Resistance
MFP Plastics sanitary pipework and fittings are highlyresistant to chemicals normally found in domesticsewage and waste water discharges. Further comprehen-sive information on the chemical resistance of plasticpipework may be found in BS CP312: Part 1: 1973,Code of Practice for Plastics Pipework.
Push-fit polypropylene pipes and fittings cannot be solvent welded and if installed on the external surface ofa building where they could be subjected to ultra violetlight some protection is required by the application of asuitable paint or by boxing in.
Storage and Handling
Loose pipes should be stacked on a reasonably flat surface, free from sharp stones or such projections. They should be supported on timber battens not lessthan 75mm wide, at spacings not greater than 1M cen-tres. Side supports should be of similar timber battensat intervals not greater than 1.5M centres. Pipes of different diameter and wall thickness should, preferably,be stacked separately or, where this is not possible, larger diameter pipes should be placed on bottom.Spigot and socket pipes should be stacked having sockets positioned at alternate ends protruding toensure pipes are evenly supported along their fulllength. Pipe stacks should not exceed seven layers, or2M high.
Pipes which are stored in the open for long periodsshould be protected from strong sunlight by coveringwith reflective sheets.
Fittings supplied in polythene bags or cardboard boxesshould be stored away from direct sunlight. Bags shouldbe opened to prevent build-up of temperature. Solventcement should be stored in a cool place, away from anyheat source.
PVCu pipes and fittings are strong, though lightweight, and therefore very easily handled. However, it is necessary to take reasonable care in handling to prevent damage in extreme cold conditions. Pipesshould, preferably, be loaded and unloaded by hand, but if mechanical handling is used, protected slings are recommended.

Multikwik WCs are particularly prone to obstruction in or near the trap through misuse. Multikwik connectors are designedto allow for easy removal and replacement of the pan.
Manufacture
Multikwik WC pan connectors are moulded from white EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) copolymer. The connector body is man-ufactured by injection moulding and the sealing rings are produced by moulding from a proven synthetic elastomeric com-pound.
Agrément Board Certificates
The Agrément Board have issued certificates relating to Multikwik WC pan connectors for use on Above Ground SanitaryPipework Systems.
No. 76/399 published in September 1976 was the first assessment and this has now been replaced and extended by cer-tificates Nos. 79/694, 83/1089, 84/1362 and 88/2107.
Application
Multikwik connectors are suitable for jointing to:
• P or S trap Washdown/Siphonic WC pans to BS 1213:1945
• Horizontal outlet WC pans to BS 5503 and BS 5504 Part 1 1977
• 110mm uPVC to BS EN 1329-1:2000
• 110mm uPVC to BS 4660: 1973
• 102mm Clay to BS 65: 1981
• 102mm Cast Iron to BS EN 877:1999
• 100mm ‘Timesaver’ Cast Iron and other materials withsimilar varying internal diameters
Fitting
Multikwik flexible connectors are designed to seal without the use of lubricant. The inside of the soil pipe must be rea-sonably clean and smooth. Just push the connector spigot firmly into the soil pipe, align the pan outlet or pipe spigot withthe connector socket and push through the sealing flanges to joint.
It is important that the elastomeric and plastic sealing flanges fold inwards as shown in Fig 1 to ensure a positive seal.
Check the connector is the correct size for the pan outlet and soil pipe. Minor variations in pan spigot size can be accom-modated as the elastomeric and plastic sealing flanges ensure a positive seal. If the pan outlet is considerably under oroversized an appropriate size connector should be used.
General
Each Multikwik connector has a label showing number and size and is packed in a polythene bag with installation leafletand sachet of lubricant. As soil pipe sizes vary considerably it may sometimes be necessary to apply a liberal amount oflubricant from the sachet provided to aid assembly.
Do not use any lubricant on WC pan spigot.
Important
Connectors should not be allowed to come into contactwith mineral oil, grease, putty or any compound containingmineral oil or grease and should be protected from directsunlight and naked flames.
Note: If Multikwik connectors are to be stored where theambient temperature could exceed 95°F/35°C the advice ofthe manufacturer should be obtained.
ILLUSTRATION showing how different Multikwik Connectors canbe linked with this simple Multilink Sleeve Unit.
MULTILINK can be used to sleeve any Connector suitable for4” (102mm) soil pipe and will fit into any Connector suitable for4”-4 1/2” spigots.

The following information has been taken from the BuildingRegulations Approved Documents and from the Code of Practicefor sanitary pipework BSEN 12056:2000, Parts 1 to 5. It is intendedas a brief digest of the relevant provisions, and is a guidance as tothe use and installation of MFP Soil and Waste drainage products.
KeyA. Small similar sized connections not exceed-
ing 65mm and not directly opposite shouldbe offset by 110mm on a 100mm diameterstack and 250mm on a 150mm stack.
B. Angled connections or 50mm diameterparallel junction where a waste branchdirectly opposite a WC would enter thestack within 200mm below the WC con-nection centre line.
Building Regulations and Codeof Practice Requirements
The distance between the lowestbranch connection to thedischarge stack and the invert ofthe bend off the foot of the stackshould not be less than shown onthe table opposite.
A branch pipe should not discharge into a stack in a waywhich could cause cross flow intoany other branch pipe.
The Collar boss has been developedprecisely to facilitate multi-point con-nections in the area of the WC to thestack, eradicating the danger of crossflow even within the 200mm danger zone.
The collar boss has the added advan-tage of allowing such connections frombaths and showers to connect into thestack above floor level at four pointsaround its circumference.
Discharge from the WC is preventedfrom making contact with the smallerdiameter pipework and waste waterfrom the bath spills out of the annularchamber. This flow pattern occurswithout interruption to merge withother discharges passing down the 110mmvertical stack.
The wide range of MFP componentsused in the construction of single stacksystems have been designed toensure that simple ring seal joints areprimarily employed on site – this givesa completely flexible system providingfor maximum ease of installation.

Underground drainage systems are traditionally ventilatedby ventilating stacks that terminate in an end open to theatmosphere. The Durgo valve was designed to reduce thenumber of ventilating pipes and roof penetrations indomestic, institutional and commercial sanitary plumbingsystems without affecting drainage performance.
Durgo valves are supplied complete to suit 50mm, 82mmand 110mm pipework suitable for use in above groundsanitary pipework system designed in accordance withBSEN 12056:2000, Parts 1 to 5. When the system is sub-ject to negative pressure the valve diaphragm lifts fromits seating and allows air to be drawn into the pipework.
If positive pressure occurs the diaphragm returns to theclosed position to prevent foul air entering the building.
Durgo valves should always be fitted in a vertical positionabove the flood level of the highest sanitary appliance. They should be installed within the building in a non-habitable location, e.g. duct or roof or ceiling space, where there is no risk of freezing and where they areaccessible for maintenance.
Durgo valves are supplied complete with insulatingcover which should be left in position after installation, for protection.
The ventilation of a discharge stack tothe open air is required to limit thepressure fluctuations within the sys-tem and thereby prevents water sealsin traps from being drawn and foul airfrom entering the building.
Where separate ventilation of branchpipes is not provided, the length andslope of the branch discharge pipesshould not exceed those shown in theopposite diagram. If the values in thisdiagram are exceeded, the branch pipeshould be ventilated by a branch venti-lating pipe or by an anti-syphon trap.

Stack vents should terminate atsuch a height and position that foulair does not cause a nuisance orhealth hazard. In general, this isachieved if the vent stack is notless than 900mm above the head ofany window or other opening into abuilding within a horizontal distance of 3m. Stack should bepositioned away from parapets andcorners of buildings.
The bend at the base of a dischargestack should be a large radius bendor, alternatively, two 45° large radiusbends should be used.
A stub stack consists of a short110mm discharge stack with aclosed top, preferably with anaccess fitting, which can be usedto connect a group of ground floorappliances to a drain, provided thecentre line of the WC branch is notmore than 1.5m, and the centre lineof the topmost connection is notmore than 2.5m above the invertlevel of the drain or branch discharge pipe. BS 5572 and Building RegulationsTechnical Document H require that thecapacity of the sanitary system should belarge enough to carry the expected flowat any point. The flow depends on thetype, number and grouping of appliancesand on the frequency of use of thoseappliances.
The Discharge Unit Method detailed inBSEN 12056:2000, Parts 1 to 5 pro-vides a system of determining the dis-charge stack and branch discharge pipesizes required where a large number ofappliances discharge into individualstacks. The value for each appliance isestablished, depending on its frequency of use. The unit values for allsanitary appliances discharging into thestack or branch discharge pipe shouldbe added and the appropriate dischargepipe size chosen from the pipe sizingtables following.
Single WC’s: 100mm WC branches do not normallyrequire venting whatever the length or the number ofbends included in the run. Bends, however, should haveas large a radius as possible to prevent blockage.
Range of WC’s: 100mm branch pipes serving rangesof WC’s will usually not need branch venting. Lengthand slope are not critical but venting may be necessarywhere there are several bends in the branch pipe ormore than eight WC’s are connected.

Boss connectionsThree types of boss fittings are available as alternative methods of connecting small diameter sanitarypipework to the vertical stack.
Bossed UpstandsBoss Branch UpstandsStrap-on Boss
Bossed upstandsSome fittings in the 110 mm range aresupplied with single boss connections at 87.5°, complete withprelocated multi-fit ‘T’ seals in eachsmall diameter socket to receive 32mm and 40 mm PVCu and polypropylene small diameter waste pipes.
Boss branchesPlain boss upstands are moulded at 90°to the axis of the main body. Theseshort sockets are of the same diameteracross the range of 82, 110 and 160mm fittings, designed for conversion to32, 40 and 50 mm pipe by using theappropriate mult-fit boss connector.
Boss branches allow multi-point con-nection of branch pipes to the centralstack via preformed boss upstands asdetailed on pages 6-9. The most versatile branch for bathroom design is the uPVC five bossbranch used in conjunction with theKBK35, KBK25 knuckle bends. Thereare four different permitted connectionsinto the branch’s side bosses, as illus-trated opposite. The rear boss may beused with any of these combinations asrequired, but staggered connectionsinto the branch are not permitted.
Strap-on BossThe strap-on boss allows connection ofsmall diameter pipework to the stack atany point (subject to BuildingRegulations requirements). The strap-on boss has a multi-fit ring seal fordirect connection to 32, 40 or 50 mmPVCu, polypropylene pipework.

nThe Marley Pipe Wrap consists of a flexible intumescentstrip sealed in a protective sleeve, making the PipeWraps quick and easy to install.Wall Construction. The Pipe Wrap can be used with-in brick, block or concrete walls to provide up to 4hours fire resistance. Single or double Pipe Wraps maybe required, depending on the wall thickness and fire protection required.
Floor Construction. For vertical pipes through floors,Pipe Wraps can be easily installed within the depth ofthe floor slab, providing up to four hours’ fire resistance, dependant on pipe size and method of installation.
The Marley Fire Sleeve consists of two half shells ofpowder coated sheet steel filled with a heat reactiveintumescent material and joined around the pipe by side clasps. In the event of a fire, the intumescent material expandsinwards blocking off the pipe and providing an effectiveseal against flames and hot gases, so maintaining compartment walls and floors.Where a pipe penetrates through a wall construction theFire Sleeve should be fixed to the wall on the side atrisk from the fire attack. Where the direction of fire riskis not known, a Fire Sleeve should be fixed to both sidesof the wall. Where the pipe penetrates through a floor construction, the Fire Sleeve should be fixed to theunderside only.Fire Sleeves are supplied complete with four masonryanchor bolts for fixing direct to brick, block or concretewalls. Where access is restricted, it is acceptable to useonly three anchor bolts.Fire Sleeves are normally fixed to relatively smooth surfaces. However, where the surface is very rough, it is possible to improve the smoke tightness of the seal bywelding it onto a bead of Intumescent Gap Mastic (SFM 400).
Marley Fire Protection Products stop the spread of fire via PVCu pipework passing through fire compartment walls andfloors, providing up to four hours fire resistance. Marley fire protection products have been fully tested at independentlaboratories to BS476: part 20: 1987, for up to 4 hours fire resistance.

This system comprises the uPVCbarrel pipe clip and the PVCcoated mild steel socket clip and
is generally used with the largerdiameters (82-160mm) sanitarypipework (for full componentdetials, see page 11).
The barrel pipe clip is suitable foruse as an intermediate guidebracket between anchor points, allowing the pipe to move withoutdistortion as it responds to temperature changes. The socketclip is available as a supportingmetal anchor bracket. The metalsocket clip may be adapted to suitthe outside diameter of the pipe byinserting a barrel clip collar. Alljoint ring sockets have an anchorrib so that clips may be securelyand accurately fitted into place(see opposite).
Table opposite indicates the maximum distances between pipesupports, taking account of thethermal movement of plastic.
The MFP Pipe Support System hasbeen developed to meet the require-ments of suspended sanitary pipework. It is suitable for internal use only.
Three methods of supporting low gra-dient PVCu pipes have been devel-oped to provide a robust, lightweightsystem suitable for most situations.
1. Single supportSuitable for pipework from 32 mmto 160 mm diameters within 500mm of the floor soffit (600 mm withside bracing).
2. Continuous channel supportSuitable for exposed pipework from32 mm to 160 mm within 750 mmof the floor soffit (or 1.0 m withside bracing).
2. 32 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm pipeworkis installed as shown in methods 1.and 2. without additional anglebrace connections.

Vertical pipesA change in direction from verticalto low gradient pipework should beachieved by using two 45° bendsor a 90° long radius bend. Theseshould be fully supported.
A change of direction from low gradient to vertical pipeworkshould be achieved by using a 45°branch and an adjustable bend.
Small diameter connectionConnections for small diameterpipework should be 45°, andwhere possible dipped into themain run. The SWS3135 32 mmand SWS4135 40 mm BossBranch give the required angle.
Access pointsThe system design should incorporate access points to allowunobstructed access for testingand maintenance. The pipe supportsystem can also be used to construct support frames for vertical pipework in enclosedducts. Other services may also besecured to these frames.
Components in pipe support system are covered by RegisteredDesign No. 967040 and patentapplication No. 36610-73.
3. Double supportSuitable for pipework from 82mm to 250 mm within 1.0 m ofthe floor soffit (1.2 m with sidebracing). Larger 200 mm and250 mm diameters require theuse of channel strip angles(JCA1) and 90° angle cleats(JAC1) to attach the anchorbracket and angle brace to thefloor soffit.
4. Side bracingUse of side bracing increasesthe maximum distance of thepipework from the floor soffit.
4. On long runs with no horizontalbranch connection, side bracingis required at 6 m centres.
