How does soil wizard work?Soil wizard is a battery powered data logger with a solar panel which is mounted in the field in minutes. Due to the autonomous power supply there is no need for infrastructure whatsoever. Soil wizard comes standard with 3 con-nectors for soil moisture, which can be mounted at different depths for different crops. Data is permanently measured, and with a press of the button you down-load the data via Bluetooth onto your mo-bile phone. You switch on the Bluetooth on your mobile phone and a few seconds later the data is transmitted to your phone/Netbook/pocket PC/Notebook. On tho-se devices the serial number of the soil wizard is saved and therefore many soil wizards can be handled by one phone. You can see the data directly on the mo-bile phone and you decide instantly if and how much irrigation your crop needs. With one mobile phone/Pocket PC/Netbook/Notebook with Bluetooth it is possible to administer many different soil wizards. From the mobile phone/Pocket PC/Netbook/Notebook all the data can be transmitted to the Internet and to our web platform www.fieldclimate.com .

Which soil moisture technologies are supported?Water tension:Water tension is a very practical value to estimate the irrigation needs of a crop. For many crops, simple rules apply to estimate when and how much irrigation, based on the tension, should be applied. In potatoes the following rule of thumb applies. Hold your crop until flowering at a water tension level between -20 to -40 cBar. With this strategy you avoid potato scab. After bloom you can keep the crop drier – from now on you can let the water tension levels go to -60 cBar. For Apple trees, you can simply keep them in a range between -20 and -80 cBar. The same values will apply for Cherries. Before harvesting, ide-ally they should be drier, around -40 cBar and you should keep them around -20 to -40 or maximum -50 cBar to avoid the risk of splitting.

In any case you should not let the water tension go down to less than -20 cBar because of the risk of splitting. Shallow rooted plants and vegetables should be kept bet-ween -20 and -40 cBar. Decagon produces the MPS-1 Sen-

sor to measure suction. The sensor is based on a capacitance measuring de-vice which measures the water tension between two ceramic plates. The water content inside the ceramic plates has a direct relation to suction in the soil. The advantage of the sensor is that it can measure suction from 15 to -500 cBar which is high enough also to be used in regulated deficit irrigation methods (RDI).

Soil Water Content (Capacitance sen-sors): Soil water content in percentage of soil volume can be measured with ca-pacitance sensors. We offer two types of sensors. For economic reasons we sup-port sensors which work on the principle

of “Frequency Domain Reflectrometry“ (FDR). 10HS, EC5 and EC10, EC20 are single sensor solutions from Decagon. The 10HS sensor is ideally suitable for open field applications. The EC5 sensor is designed more for pot plants and soil-less appli-cations. “AquaSpy” are profile probes measuring the soil moisture in the vertical profile with 5-15 single sensors (50 cm to 150 cm length). They are very useful if it is necessary to verify the soil moisture changes in the whole profile in order to get informati-on regarding better nutrition and irrigation planning.

The advantage of soil wizard is that these base technologies can be combined so as to help you answer the burning question: “How much water does my crop really need?” These questions can be answered with the tabular and graphic information on the Phone/Netbook/pocket PC/Notebook directly, on the spot. As all data is permanently logged all soil moisture values and irrigation data can be viewed on the PC and is saved for many years on the www.fieldclimate.com platform for later viewing and evaluation.
