Best wishes for a Joyous Sukkot Celebration Sukkot, starting this Sunday evening, gives us a week to rejoice. Having
deepened our relationship with Hashem over Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur, we look forward to just enjoying quiet, secluded time. Our
renewed closeness with Hashem spills over into our friendships with one
another, as we welcome guests into our Sukkah and share in all that we
have harvested. Joy comes from our good feelings of appreciation, and the
chance to share our bounty with others. We move outside our permanent
homes because all the protection we need comes from Above. We think
about how carefully Hashem watched over our ancestors, every generation
of them. We rejoice, feeling secure, knowing that we are never abandoned,
never alone. We look ahead to the ending of the Chag, dancing with our
Torah, knowing its study keeps our connection to Hashem ever fresh,
renewed, and strong. Please enjoy special time with your children, as
you celebrate their learning and growth. Chag Same’ach.

Parshat Ha’Azinu TOVERVIEW: Parshat HaAzinu (Devarim Ch: 32: 1 – 52)
Almost all of Ha'azinu is a song, written in the Torah in two parallel columns. Moshe summons the heavens and the earth to stand as eternal witnesses to what will happen if the Jewish People sin and do not obey the Torah. He reminds the people to examine the history of the world, and note how the Jewish People are rescued from obliteration in each generation - that Hashem "pulls the strings" of world events so that Bnei Yisrael can fulfill their destiny as His messengers in the world. Hashem's kindness is such that Israel should be eternally grateful, not just for sustaining them in the wilderness, but for bringing them to a land of amazing abundance, and for defeating their enemies. But, this physical bounty leads the people to become self-satisfied and over-indulged. Physical pleasures corrupt the morals of the people. They worship empty idols and powerless G-ds, and indulge in all kinds of depravity. Hashem will then let nations with no moral worth subjugate Israel and scatter them across the world. However, their only purpose is as a rod to chastise the Jewish People. When these nations think that it is through their own power that they have dominated Israel, Hashem will remind them that they are no more that a tool to do His will. The purpose of the Jewish People is fundamental - that man should know his Creator. Neither exile nor suffering can sever the bond between Hashem and His people, and eventually in the final redemption this closeness will be restored. Hashem will then turn His anger against the enemies of Israel, as though they were His enemies, showing no mercy to the tormentors of His people. Hashem then gives His last commandment to Moshe: That he should ascend Mount Nevo and be gathered there to his people. © Ohr Somayach International 2015
DRASHA: In reality, the first word of this week's prophetic song/parsha in encompasses the entire message of this Torah portion. Haazinu connotes paying attention, concentrating, listening attentively and absorbing words and messages that are being spoken. As one's hearing acumen begins to lessen and wane with the passage of time, background noise becomes a problem when attempting to hear what someone else is saying to you. In the clutter of traffic, conversations, and the hum of everyday urban life, we have become accustomed to not hearing what is being said to us by others and perhaps, even more importantly, by life's events. We are severely limited in our options in life and behavior by the fact that we cannot hear clearly and thus cannot discern what we should know and remember and what is to be discarded and forgotten. The metaphor for this is the example of going to a restaurant and attempting to hear the waiter announce the menu and choices. If we somehow did not hear or understand what the waiter said we will never be able to make the choices that we wish from the restaurant's menu. Well, in the broadest sense, this is true of every aspect of life. We always have many choices but most of the time we cannot hear them being annunciated to us. Moshe demands that somehow we pay attention and hear the message that he is imparting. Good hearing will eventually lead to good choices and a productive life. It is no wonder that the Talmud includes those who cannot hear in the list of people who cannot really be held responsible for their actions and behavior. This week's parsha encompasses all of Jewish history, past,
present and future. It details for us the triumphs and failures as well throughout the ages. It points out the bad choices that were made when we did not hear or pay attention to the consequences that would undoubtedly stem from those missed ques. One of the ideas that Midrash teaches us is that the sound of the shofar heard at Mount Sinai 4700 years ago still reverberates and sounds throughout all of the ages. The only problem is that not many people concentrate enough to be able to truly hear and discern it. The enormous background noise of life interferes with our ability to hear that shofar echo of Sinai. What results is that there are many positive choices and options in our lives that we are simply unaware of because we did not hear them announced to us. Though there are many new technological gadgets that are available to block out background noise, it is a shame that we have not yet devised such a gadget for our spiritual and intellectual hearing faculties as well. The season of the year when Haazinu is read in the synagogue coincides with the great goals of repentance, positive living and spiritual renewal. Therefore the command of Moshe to listen carefully and attentively to the words of the Torah and to the choices presented before us is most timely and relevant to our life and the world around us. The 8th graders have decided on their science fair projects after a lengthy proposal process. They officially kicked off
their research this week at the Central Library in downtown San Diego. They will begin their testing after the break.
Ask them to tell you about their project goals. After doing some research, they headed to Belmont Park to ride the
roller coaster and practice calculating speed, distance, time, acceleration, and momentum.
Ms. Rivard's fifth grade science class found out that they can balance many drops of water on the head of a penny due
to surface tension.
The period before Yom Kippur is a time to think
about our deeds. Our main goal this year in third
grade is to be a better person. The students wrote
personal and meaningful wishes and blessings to
their friends, ALL in HEBREW!!!
Well done to all the third graders!!! It was a pleas-
ure to witness this process and to see their hearts
of gold shine bright!
