HOT!HOT!

NOT!NOT!

WELCOME! Hi everyone, Butserfest was bigger, better and rocked harder this year!

We had some of the greatest music yet from both the main stage and the second stage tent. From Kids in Glass Houses to Feed the Rhino, everywhere people were moshing hard to the awesome tuneage.

We even provided fantastic sunny weather along with a load of fun activities. The fun never stopped! East Hants Youth Council sponsored Butserfest this year as well as interviewing bands and running a stall, so it was a busy day.

Dive in and read some of the exclusive band interviews and our thoughts from the day! ENJOY!!

Recommended by the Youth Council The Youth Council’s recommended list, where you can find out what TV shows, films, books, websites and games they think you need to check out. By Michael Chilton

Film Skyfall In SKYFALL, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. Daniel Craig’s latest outing as bond will surely be one hell of a ride. Expect big things. The 23rd outing of James bond which is released 26 October is being eagerly awaited by us all!

Book Maximum Ride Maximum Ride is a science fiction fantasy book series by James Patterson. The series follows the lives of the ‘Flock’, Max, Fang, Iggy, Gasman, Nudge, and Angel. The group were created in a laboratory and are part human, part avian. The series follows

their struggle to overcome their pursuers the ‘Erasers’ and live a peaceful life until they realise they are part of a much bigger plot that will change the world forever. For suspense, thrills and action this series of books has it all.

TV The Big Bang Theory If you haven’t seen the Big Bang Theory yet what have you been doing? And if you are already a fan of the show then good news, the

6th series starts in November. BBT always provides plenty of laughs. It follows the lives of four socially inept science obsessed friends: Leonard, Sheldon, Raj and Howard. They tackle everything from warlocks and science to women. Even if you don’t get the science you can’t help but laugh as the

characters stumble from one socially awkward situation to another. BERZINGA!

Game Temple Run Bored on the train? Try out the new app craze, Temple Run. Once you’ve started you won’t be able to quit this addictive run and jump game as you try your best to outrun demonic monkeys whilst accumulating points to achieve a high score. This had us hooked for hours, definitely

worth a try.

Website Pottermore It may not be for everyone but if you need something to fill the void left by the

end of Harry Potter then check out this website set up by JK herself. With exclusive and unseen chapters from the novels, it’s guaranteed you will find something here for all your Potter needs.

When did you start your band? While I was still at school in 2006

If you were stranded on a desert island what would you bring? My cat to keep me company and probably a survival knife because I like a bit of Bear Grylls!

Is this your first performance at Butserfest?Yes it is actually, people talk about it a lot and so we are really excited to play this year.

When did you start playing instruments? When I was six I learned the piano but gave it up aged seven. I don’t know why; I’m annoyed I did. At secondary school I started learning the guitar and now I play the bass.

What are your musical inspirations?Fleetwood Mac, Elton john and the Beatles because we grew up listening to them. I think you are always influenced by the music you heard your parents playing while you were growing up, even though you might not realise it at the time.

Do you like trees?I love trees, especially silver birch.

Do you speak another language?I was born in Switzerland so until I was 2/3 I used to speak French, but obviously in baby talk, I wish I’d kept up with French now.

Do you prefer big or small crowds? It’s a completely different experience both times it’s easy playing with thousands in the crowd, but those shows we’ve

been supporting other bands. So when you go and play smaller gigs you know those people have bought tickets to see you, and you feel better.

Do you have a ritual before a performance? It changes each tour. We used to sing a war time song - we’d watched Band of Brothers in the van - and there was a little song we’d sing or a group huddle.

Do you like Olly murs?Yeah I like him but I’ve never met him.

Butserfest was my first time at a festival and was an amazing experience.

The Youth Council had a stall at the festival so the first thing we did was to help set it up.

Hannah, Tegan and I then walked around the site and asked people questions. The survey was to find out how much people enjoyed Butserfest and how it could be improved for next year.

After a while of getting people to answer the questions we went back to the stall and had a break. During the break, we went to look round all the stalls. Hannah and Tegan bought things from the sweet stall and after that we went to make a free smoothie.

To mix it together, I tipped the ingredients into a blender before pedalling a bike that powered it!

After that and having a go at a martial arts activity we went back to the stall.

Shortly afterwards, we went back to the survey. We got quite a few people to answer. It wasn’t long before some of the Youth Council went to interview the first band.

When the girls returned Tegan decided to hand out leaflets and free wristbands.

Once all of the leaflets had gone, we went to try out an inflatable game, where you had to stand on one of four podiums. There was a giant ball you threw at each other and you had to try not to fall off. It was great fun, I didn’t fall off once whilst Hannah couldn’t get back on!

As soon as we returned, we went to interview lower than Atlantis.

Here is what they had to say

After that we went to the staff only area to have a rest. We chatted and had fun, it was then time for me to go home and the others were off to interview another band.

It was a really fun day which I will never forget. I hope to go to many more and stay as a member of the Youth Council team. I have loved every minute so far.

If you want to join the Youth Council and join in with many fun activities, please contact Liam Moloney Youth Council Coordinator [email protected] Tel: 01730 234186.

What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?Weirdest food I’ve ever eaten? Err, that’s quite hard really. Probably haggis.

How did you start the band? Me and John used to be in another band and we kind of had an idea for that band but then parted ways so we used it for a new band. In 2010 we got Chris in the band – when we had a different singer – then we changed lineup... so it all kind of evolved around the other band that me and John used to be in.

Have you guys been to Butserfest before?Yeah, we have.

How did you find it?We came last year but didn’t play. We came to help out a friend and stuff, so we saw it and we thought it would be really good to play this time... It was really good.

Have you got a ritual before you go on stage?I think it would be nice to but you’re rushing around on stage so it’s difficult. I empty all the change out of my pockets. Drink plenty of water, put your phone on Airplane mode.

Do you like trees, and what’s your favourite type?I have a silver birch tree in my garden. It’s got to be a palm tree because whenever you see one they make you feel happy and warm.

Where did you get your name from? We were having a bit of a tough time in our old band and we said something like ‘why are we prolonging the agony?’ I thought, ‘I quite like that’. It’s nothing negative but if you want the good in life then you have to go through the bad.

Have you tried the ‘Tegan Special’?What’s that?

[Egg, chocolate, bread and orange juice blended together] I would. I’m quite an adventurous eater. I won’t steal your recipe but I reckon I’d try that!

Any advice for budding bands? You’ve got to stick at it, if it’s really what you want then you have to focus hard on rehearsing, getting gigs, getting out there – make yourself known!

How often do you rehearse? At least 3 times a week – everyday if we could, but at least once a week.

Do you get nervous before a gig? Not nervous, but it’s more excitement. It’s a mixture of feelings - I used to get nervous but not so much anymore.

How good was your last school report?I can’t remember, I guess they weren’t too bad. My mum never gave me a slap for any of them!

What’s it like being in a band? It’s like anything, a lot of hard work, though I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. It’s the best job in the world and one I dreamed of as a kid.

When did you form the band?Alex started the band when we are at school as a kind of a hobby more than anything and I knew him from the local music scene and then I met Phil and he joined. We all knew each other from school really.

What’s your favourite holiday destination?I’m going to Portugal so hopefully that, I will report back to you and let you know how it goes.

What’s it like on tour? Who’s the most annoying?I’m definitely the most annoying one, I can tell you that. I guess because we are friends it’s not so bad, we all enjoy it really. We work together and give each other space.

What’s the best gig you’ve played so far?For me it would probably be Reading two years ago in the NME tent, it was packed and

there were still people flowing out the sides, and just then that I realised where we were, it was just something we never thought we would accomplish. Also, other than that, probably places like Japan, its somewhere I would never be able to go if I weren’t in the band so that’s awesome.

What’s your favourite type of tree?Hmmm, that’s a tough one, for me it would be big ones, I love Christmas trees obviously so yeah tall and big trees.

How do you go about writing music? It differs from time to time; we spend nearly everyday writing,

Alcohol drug free festival

Interview with iain mahanty of

Page 13: SOL 27 - Winter 2012

soL 27 13

be it with whole band or as an individual. Normally one of us comes in with an idea and then we work on it together.

How much time do you spend practicing? It varies really, when we are on tour it can be up to six hours whereas when we’re not we just go and hang by the beach and do nothing!

Are you working on a new album?Yeah, we are writing at the moment, it’s going really well and we are going to start recording at the end of this year, beginning of next and hopefully have it out for next summer.

If you were stuck on a desert island and you could only take three things what would they be?That would be the Mrs, a record player and records, don’t see much need for much else.

What bands have inspired you and influence you now?Well Noel Gallagher is the reason I picked up and started playing the guitar and Green Day were

probably the reason why I wanted to be in a band.

Hard question, but what is your favourite song off all your albums? At the moment it would be one off our second album, we started playing it again on tour and we all love it. It’s so fun to play.
