IntroductionAt present asphalt roads and vehicles using fossil fuels are the common modes of transportation.It causes emission of green house gases leading to global warming.Soon we will run out fossil fuels and other non renewable sources of energy.

Introduction(contd.)In 2009, the innovative idea of Solar Panel Roads was proposed.In 2010, company named SOLAR ROADWAYS was established.Location : Idaho, US.Funded by US federal government.Aim : to replace current asphalt roads with solar panel roads.

Why Solar ??Most abundant renewable source of energy.It can be easily harnessed and converted into electrical energy.No adverse effect on environment.

Solar RoadwaysFuture of road transportation.Consists of structurally engineered solar panels that we drive on.Hexagonal shape with 12 inch sides.Interlinks with neighbouring panel to form solar roadway system. System that pays for itself.Intelligent highway infrastructure.

1. Road Surface LayerTop most translucent layer.Made of extremely durable textured glass.Designed for reduced skidding chances.Waterproof layer.Houses the LEDs for illuminating the roads.Tested for traction, load carrying capacity & impact resistanceand exceeded all requirements.

2. Electronics LayerMiddle layer.Contains photovoltaic cells.Conversion of solar energy to electrical energy takes place here.Houses the heating element and microprocessors for controlling them.It also houses the microprocessors for controlling lighting LEDs.

Recent Project StatusPhase 1 completed in 2011. Phase 1 consists of building panel prototypes.Phase 2 completed in Dec,2014. Phase 2 consists of building a parking lot.Presently solar roads are being built in various countries around the globe in small scale.22

Future ScopeProject is still in infancy.With the provision of initial investment it can be carried forward.Increased energy requirement in future can only be met with renewable resources of energy, such as that obtained from solar roadways.To reduce the consumption of fossil fuel and to eliminate global warming, the innovative idea of solar panel road is inevitable.It will provide answers for transportation pollution & energy crisis.

ConclusionEnergy shortage in future is a reality.In order to tackle this crisis Solar Panel Roads can be adopted.Even though the initial cost is high, as it is a system that pays for itself it is a better choice.For under developed and developing countries, it might seem impractical now. But it can be adopted in stages, in future.With technological upgradation in this field, jobs, clean energy and a safer transportation system can be made.
