WHAT IS SOLAR ENERGY?

Solar energy is the light and radiant heat from the sun that

influences earth’s climate and weather that sustains life. This energy can be used for the process of generation of

electricity by tapping the solar energy. Solar technologies are broadly characterized as

1. active solar technology

2. passive solar technology

Page 6: solar roadways

6

Photo voltaic cellPhoto voltaic cell are used to convert solar energy directly into

electricity using semi conductors. This is active type of solar technology.

7

Why solar?

Solar energy is preferable as compared to another

energy sources due to the following reasons: Reduced dependence on fossil fuel Environment friendly Matching peak time output with peak timedemand Modularity and scalability Flexible locations

8

What does solar roadway means?

A solar roadway is a road surface that generates electricity by solar power using photovoltaic and includes solar panels and LED signage, that can be driven on.

9

Existing problem in road construction

Made with petrochemical product called

asphalt. This is a nonrenewable product. Deposition of ice Needs to be painted with information. Huge cost for repairs

10

Solar Road Construction

A solar roadway consists of three layers: Road surface layer/Glass layer Electronics layer Base plate layer

14

How it Works? Sunlight falls on solar panels which generates

electricity This is as same time is transferred to nearby

houses and power station LEDs controlled by microprocessors display

information on the surface of road Anti icing layer clears the road Also senses changes in weight

ADVANTAGES

Renewability Life span Initial cost Road illumination Intelligent highway system Military and rescue system Smart always connected roads and

vehicles Smart grid Traffic assistance Driver assistance Oil independence

Page 16: solar roadways

16

Road illumination

Real time information can be displayed on road itself.

Works as drivers personal assistance.

LEDs could warn drivers if they exceed speed limits or drive too slow.

Intelligent highway system

Pays for itself Telephone, cable TV and

high speed internet Inter communication

between roads and cars to avoid collision

Tracking system embedded

Military and rescue system

In the event of an environmental disaster or military

emergency, solar roadways would provide power when it is

needed most. As solar power is renewable, it obviously requires no external

connection to an artificial power source should provide power

when it is needed most.

20

Smart grid

Removes the needs of grids, directly transfers

electricity. No overhead wiring and poles required Also has telephones cable TV and high speed internet

optics laid down.

Page 21: solar roadways

21

Traffic assistance

Each panel has a microprocessor that monitors the

load above it. With embedded GPS it could itself evaluate the

alternate routes. Better traffic management thus further decreasing

pollution. Warns drivers for sudden change in weight on roads.

22

DISADVANTAGES

High initial cost Road surfaces deposits reduces its efficiency( salt,

rubber and dirt) Seasonal efficiency. Needs a town planning.

Page 23: solar roadways

Road survey of India

India had a road network of over 42,45,805 kilometers in 2011.

In which national highways and state high ways cover 0.05%of total road network.

These highways can produce 450TWh of electricity according to references when they are surfaced by solar panels

But India needs 991TWh of electricity This implies that if 0.01% of total road network of

India is surfaced with solar roadway panels, it would illuminate our nation.

Page 24: solar roadways

24

Conclusion For roughly the same cost of the current system

(asphalt roads and fossil fuels burning electricity generation plants), the solar road ways can be implemented.

No more global warming. Safer driving conditions. Far less pollution. A new secure high way infrastructure that pays for

itself A decentralized self healing secure power grid, No more dependency on foreign fuel.
